- This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. There are less than one thousand professional race car drivers in the world. Business student Dion Von Moltke shares what it takes to make it in the highly competitive racing industry.
Dion von Moltke is an American professional racecar driver and international business student at FIU. Moltke rounds a race track at speeds that reach almost 200 miles per hour, pulling 4 to 5 Gs at every turn. He started racing karts when he was 13 years old, turned professional at 17 and has since competed in some of the world’s most prestigious racing series. He has multiple wins in Skip Barber, Grand-Am and the American Le Mans series. In 2013, he took home two first-place trophies at the legendary 12 Hours of Sebring and the Daytona 24 Hour race. He is currently signed for the full Tudor United Sports Car season as lead driver in the No. 35 Flying Lizard Motorsports Audi R8 LMS. Von Moltke is also a highly popular driver instructor, focusing on all aspects of peak performance, and has developed a coaching program called “Perform 360.” Born in Texas to South African parents, he lived in Sydney and Los Angeles before moving to Miami.

I know you wrote this some years ago but the problem is that if you don't have money, you can't even go racing so no one will watch how you're driving. That's the saddest part, many people have talent to drive but don't have the money to race even if it's just for fun...
I have realised this and I'm only 16 years old. I think I will never become a racing driver for a small team and I drive very good (at least from my experience in rental go-karts)
To the kids asking if it's too late, Pedora De La Rosa started karting at 17 and Takuma Sato started at 19.

***** That im not too sure, I know Takuma got a fully paid scholarship for F3 after succeeding in karting. Getting into karts is something probably self-funded, unfortunately.

Money talks, its really unfortunate but that's the sad truth.

People who aren't into racing rip on the scene like it's an easy thing to do. Which it isn't, if it was easy, everybody and their neighbor would be competitive on track and have mad sponsorships. How many of you can actually drive a manual or change your own oil? Random knowledge question: What does AF/R stand for and how does it affect the combustion efficiency of an engine? Personally, I would do some real shit to be in this guy's position. The other's are just jealous because instead of doing 100 MPH in a Porsche, their doing 0 MPH behind a desk.

It's really A/F R but the air to fuel ratio is how much air is used in comparison to fuel in an engine. If it changes it can cause power loss, lower fuel economy, and afterfires. I want to be a racing driver too but why would a racecar driver need to know about this?

This may be an old comment, but I had to say my part...
People saying racing is just "driving around in circles"... This is true... But there are more to racing than "driving around in circles"... You ask how many of you can drive a "stick"... Here's one for you... How many of you can "heel/toe" shift and "rev match"? If I asked you, when you are going through a corner, where is the "clipping" point of the Apex, would you even know what that means? Do you even know what an "Apex" is? What is the racing line? What am I referring to when I talk about braking points?
All these things I mentioned is what is known as "race craft"... And that ain't even *HALF* of what it takes to drive a race car... I could go on and on about this, but I don't want to end up writing a race driver's handbook in the comments here... But yeah, race car driving *IS* "driving around in circles", but with a lot of other factors to go with it...

To be a race car driver you have to be able to train your brain to operate in 10 separate channels at the same time.That Daytona pit out is a dangerous place and you cannot win a race from there but you can lose it there.None of the losers who are trolling this guy have ANY idea what it takes to race a car ad just jealous losers who will never accomplish anything in their lives.
If 1000 of the trolls on here tried to drive a racecar on a track to earn a drive it's almost certain that no more than one of them would be anything like fast enough and unlikely that even that fastest one would make it.

All you ripping this "rich kid" -- If you've never raced a car on a track, you have no idea what you're talking about. Yes, racing burns piles of cash, whether it's yours or someone else's, but you have to have skills, coordination, and physical and mental strength to be any good at all. He's lucky to be from a wealthy family, but I'm not the envious type, so I say good for him. If you think just anyone can do what he's done, you're wrong.

Racing is driven by money, this guy's parents pay racing teams huge amounts of money (sponsorship dollars) for a seat.. I don't doubt this kid works hard to be the best driver he can be but he got there on someone else's dime.. he had someone paying for his mistakes for him.. paying to give him more chances to drive. His only sacrifice was what?.. giving up the frat boy life? Giving up girls? (cause race drivers don't get girls right?) This speech about "pushing through adversity" is hollow and probably the worst TED talk thus far. I'll say it again.. he had someone paying for his mistakes for him..

Don't sit here talking about conquering adversity when you've had a silver spoon in your mouth from day 1. That's the point I'm making. And since it bears on the conversation, I started as a homeless teen...now I employ 15 people and make plenty of money, from a business I started in my basement. Don't tell me how hard it was to hit a triple when you were born on third base.. don't wanna listen to it.

Its funny how everyone here is bashing Dion for his accomplishments. I was friends with Dion in middle school in Miami, FL when he was still racing go karts and he was one of the nicest most humble people I knew there. I wanted to race just as bad and wish I had the opportunity like many others here but that doesn't make me jealous and sour about it. Few people understand the pressure and commitment that it takes to be at the level. He's a hard working dedicated driver and regardless of financial backing he's earned his way to the top. Far more privileged people have attempted and failed, so yes money is a factor but end of the day its easy to sit at a computer and try and diminish his effort by pointing blame at something which is really only a prerequisite to success in the industry these days, but by no means a guarantee.

Just start in the simulator scene. Offers are being made by manufactureres to really good sim racers as well. I think that's the cheapest way.

Excellent talk. Explains what most people do not know about the competitiveness of what arguably could be one of the toughest sports on the planet. No question, regardless of the opportunities one has, the door can be opened, but the individual has to work to get through and work even harder to stay in the game.

+Seyas Son Anything is possible, it's sorta not that inspiring hearing a racing drivers story when he HAD money to back him, skill is a HUGE part of it, but to be honest to even get the chance money is probably well... worth more. Can't get good at driving if you dont have a car can't have a car if you don't have money. Thought this would motivate me but it just bummed me.
Racing has nothing to do with talent anymore its about sponsorship dollars. If you are halfway decent and can bring in the money you will have a ride.
It's never been any different. Early motorsport was literally full of people with big money. There were kings racing because they had the money.

people talking about how you need money to do this, are the same people that wont ever do it. start small, look into grass roots, budget and save. build the car yourself, stop thinking about the money needed and start thinking of how to get the experience. theres more than one way to skin a cat and there more than one way to hit the track!
I always dreamed to, money say the opposite. I discovered at age of'5 or 6 , i did go to little race track with electric cars, qnd i was in transcendence. I just wanted go as fast i can and love to compete with others. It was an emotional memory, all i wanted is return to that... i tested remote control car at 11 , also go kart i was good. But i was bad in school and i drop all dream to drive cars on track... after motocycle comes. Now im' 25 i will go in nz to learn english and travel ... but i really dream to start some races, i just love it

I'm 18 watching this in 2020 and I love to race 🏁 I play racing simulator Gran Turismo Sport which is the latest of their simulators following this year with the Gran Turismo 7 release so it's going to be exciting. But I like how this guy is confident and has that success mentality and that part motivates me.
This guy is a scrub. He didn't get any of his rides without his dad paying a very hefty amount of "sponsorship" dollars for him to be able to drive. Road course racing and NASCAR is full of these spoiled "funded drivers". For him to race Daytona probably costs 100 grand not counting the shit he tore up. All you need to make it to the top is a big pocketbook and a slightly above average ability to turn a steering wheel and mash some pedals... What a sacrifice he made though having to quit being a frat star. Why is this a TED talk?

No, but this guy didn't get picked to drive because of his talent. He got picked because his dad paid the team a dumpster full of money. It's really unfortunate that the guys who are actually great drivers, who are out in the shop building their own racecars til 3 am every night because they can't afford to just pay someone to do it for them, don't ever get the chance at the big leagues because they weren't lucky enough to be born with rich parents. If NFL football were like racing, you'd have a bunch of spoiled rich kids playing quarterback who's dads paid the team to let the kid play. Too get good at football you need a ball and a field,a few buddies and a coach...to get good at professional racing you need about 3 cars worth about a million each, a team of engineers, a billion dollar track to race at, a pit crew, a professional racing coach and a whole fuck load more. This guy proved himself in every way he possibly could, from the gocart track to the big leagues. You don't even enter the races this guy does without EXTREME talent. The real issue here is your stupid ass has watched way too many Disney movies and, as a result, you really believe that the world is supposed to be so fair and equitable that anyone who has a lot of heart and talent can compete in the most technologically advanced and expensive sport on the planet. Not having money doesn't matter in racing is like saying not having legs doesn't matter in running. How are you suppose to start running with no legs? How are you suppose to drive without a car? Each practice session will cost you 3-5k in parts and maintenance, excluding the 100k plus race car.

My first kart race at buckmore when I was about 12 I beat all the adults in my race.......I have been dominant in more or less every race I have done since, although being fast in the Rain was DEFINITELY a learning curve for me....although I got the hang of it after the dismal failure of my first try. I actually pay a gym to get myself as fit as the f1 boys.....for fun and have a passion for the engineering side behind the cars. I often as I'm sure many do if I could have made it to formula 3 and maybe tested for f1 if I'd started early............trouble is....my job, even with the support of my family would struggle to spend 10k on a season of karting........so perhaps I was always doomed. What do you guys think?
Sooo... Not to be captain obvious here, but did I miss the part where we find out what it takes to be a professional racer? Was hoping for more of a play by play of the nitty gritty on becoming a racer (ie: which series to begin with, raising sponsorship/being independently wealthy, rubbing elbows with team owners, etc.). Regardless, nice job presenting! Enjoyed hearing your story!

Money, physical fitness, extremely good fine motor skills, a feeling of inertia, and the ability to keep a cool head.
There are quite a few people in the world who possess those skills.....but lack the money. Lack of money renders all the other talents useless. Especially if you can't even afford the 20 thousand pound KArting championship fees

I am 11 and since i live in Singapore its really overpriced here and im not poor but still cant afford its about 6000 usd for a new cart and half of that for a used one and then on top of that you have to pay for memberships and maintenance of the kart as well as join a team

I'm 12 and I occasionally go karting with my dad who does autocross and yet everytime I beat him. Only problem is even though I have the money and talent, I unfortunaetly son't have parents that are supportive of a dream that I have.

If you can´t get a car to race, get a playstation and race on Gran Turismo. Follow Racing on TV. Learn from the greats on youtube. Where there is a will, there is a way.

This is how to be an amateur driver.
If you don't have access to a lot of money, become a highly skilled mechanic and make LOTS of friends. Join Lots of clubs. Oh, and Make Lots Of Friends! You would be surprised what a TEAM of friends can do! Friends who have Friends who have Friends.
