    Rack that I am using in this video: amzn.to/3uMGnQa
    FYI: This has been a great rack for the price. Very durable. The 3 crossbars are very wide and the stock mounting brackets that come with the tent do not fit, I had to make some of my own to mount the tent. I did so by cutting some steel straps and drilling holes and adding weather stripping to the underside. It worked great, just a little extra step if you plan to run this rack.
    Thanks for watching!

    Sam, I appreciate your video. I am in this major researching mode as I just bought a Jeep and want to start creating memories with my family (4 total people). I originally thought Ikamper but am now leaning towards Roofnest Falcon XL or the Condor. Now I'm trying to figure it out via reviews. Yours helped. Any other tips or advice is welcome. Ps. I live in Bozeman Montana to help the climates I will be camping in. Mostly spring and summer camping with some fall hunts mixed in. Thanks Sam and thanks for being real and not fake with your review.

    Thanks for the video. Been looking for the best tent that suits us and this helped. I hesitate a lot on this tent as I know velcro wears out and is not strong, especially in the wind. Sure at first it does but them straps, especially the cheep hold down system is not good, Should have buckles and if I were you, I would be getting ready to install some soon. No where do I see what the material is, Is it ripstop and how heavy. Other than that, the tent looks good.

    Hi Sam, thanks for the great video coverage on this INCLUDING the commentary on withstanding inclimate weather; invaluable content there! Was curious... what are your thoughts on the Falcon XL for couples camping sans kids?

    • @SamBischof
      @SamBischof  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Jack! Thanks for watching! I think if it were just my wife and I, we would do the Falcon XL as well. The slim profile is really nice and I really like the wedge form factor. The falcon XL and Condor XL weigh the exact same. It comes down to how much room you want. The condor XL is really nice for only two people because you have all the extra room. I think you get better views though with the wedge tents. Hope that helps!

    Great video. Clear and concise. Hope Roofnest compensates you with some perks. And at 36yrs old you are not anywhere close to being a “senior”citizen. I’m 70 and even though I get the 10% senior discounts at some stores/restaurants, I don’t see myself as a senior citizen. You’re as old as you act. So I suppose I’m 25!🤣🤣🤣. Seriously, keep camping, introducing your kids to the outdoors, spending quality time and teaching them skills they’ll be able to use when they get to be your “senior “ citizen age. Awesome job. Rock on!

      I have a RAM 1500 short bed and it doesn't really have too much overhang, probably a few inches but nothing that looks too goofy. However unless you really really want to have something large I will say this one is MASSIVE. Good luck picking!

    Hello everyone I am homeless. The most wonderful feature about this awesome and amazing roofnest, is that they've made it easier for bears to get you. When camping out in the wilderness you are much safer inside or on lower ground, you're welcome.

    Thanks for all the info. I’m new to the idea of this kind of camping. Do you have any pro and cons regarding this sort of camping compared to regular rent camping, other than the ease and speed of set up/take down?

    • @SamBischof
      @SamBischof  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks for watching! Definitely some pros and cons. I’ll try and list them here but if you have any other questions feel free to ask.
      Pros:
      - up off the ground. More security. Less critters.
      - hard shell does a better job blocking wind than a regular tent
      - built in mattress, cuts down on gear by a bunch
      - more durable than common ground tents
      - kids and adults love it. Especially the skylight.
      Cons:
      - Not super convenient to take on and off vehicle. I leave mine on full time and have no issue
      - If you plan to get to a campsite and explore in the same vehicle you’ll have to pack up your tent each time
      That’s it! We have done a ton of camping with ground tents and we would choose the roof top tent in all situations if given the option. Hope that helps!

    Debating between the XL and the new Overlander. I like the idea of extra room and comfort but I could add crossbars and gear to the Condor Overlander. Thanks for the insight.

    • @SamBischof
      @SamBischof  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah that new tent looks cool! Smaller interior space than the XL, but lots of modular add on potential. Maybe if Roofnest hits me up I can do another comparison! Thanks for watching!

  • @ryoung6725
    @ryoung6725 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Thanks for the review. I live in Arizona and do a lot of back road hunting and camping. I would rather use one of these over a tent, but then I'd have to take it down every morning when I go off to hunt. Not sure the extra work each time would be worth it, but again, thanks for the review.

    • @SamBischof
      @SamBischof  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The roof top tents are definitely convenient. But I agree if you move around a lot during the day, it can be a pain. Two solutions: get a side by side or pull a small overland trailer and put the tent on that. Detach the trailer during the day and you’re setup and ready to explore. Thanks for watching!

    Thanks for the review! Super helpful!
    Quick question tho... You mentioned staying in the roof nest during cold weather. How you do feel the tent holds up for cold weather camping? Did you feel using the tent with a rated sleeping bag provided you adequate warmth?

    • @SamBischof
      @SamBischof  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hey Carrie! Thanks for watching! To answer you question the tent did great. But it is a tent. So even in the cold it’s still cold and doesn’t provide much extra insulation over a regular tent. So like you said it comes down to your bag or bed roll and clothing. I camped recently in temps that got down to the low teens at night. I have a 20° bag and then I layered my clothing and I slept comfortable. Down is your best friend for staying super warm. Condensation can be an issue at temps that cold so be sure to leave the windows cracked. I was warm but I woke up with ice on my mustache and beard haha! Hope that helps.

    Great video Sam (as well as the other on the comparison). Would you mind sharing what bed rack you have in the video? I drive a 2021 Frontier 4x4 with a six foot bed that has the factory Utili Track system installed and the rails are about an inch below the side rails. Could you recommend a manufacturer that would provide a rack supporting this configuration? I'd like the same setup you have in the videos, basically inline with my cab height and nothing over the tailgate.

    • @SamBischof
      @SamBischof  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for watching! The bed rack that I have now (in this video) is by a brand called Hooke Road. It's been a great rack so far, zero complaints. I'm an ambassador for CBI Offroad, so I do have a CBI bed rack on the way and will be switching it out when it arrives. The Hooke Road rack mounts through my bed rail system on the Tundra, so if they have one for your Frontier, I would assume it would as well.

    • @SamBischof
      @SamBischof  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah that would work great! So far I haven’t had any issue just rolling it up out of the way. I kinda like that I can see better out the window when the awning is rolled up. But for inclement weather that would be the way to go! I just put a roof rack on too so that would be even easier. Thanks for watching!

    • @SamBischof
      @SamBischof  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Keith, thanks for watching! Sounds like you have a cool setup in the works. As long as the smart cap can support the weight of the tent then two crossbars is sufficient for mounting. But I do not know the weight ratings on the smart cap. The tent comes with four brackets to mount to two crossbars. So that is the typical setup. Hope that helps!

    • @SamBischof
      @SamBischof  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thanks for watching Dena! You can leave some bedding in, but it depends on how thick it is. I wouldn't recommend trying to push it, but once you get the tent you can test how it closes with different items in there to see what works. Just don't force it closed. I've seen some people take out the mattress and do an exped inflatable mattress, if you do that you can get away with fitting more bedding in as long as the mattress is deflated. Hope that helps!

      Hey Cory, thanks for watching! I use a Mr. Heater buddy heater in the winter. I only run it before I go to bed and when I wake up in the morning. If you mean how the tent mounts to the bars, it’s a simple custom strap that comes with the tent. Two bolts per strap on either side of the bar and tighten down with lock nuts. 4 total and it’s super secure. I put my truck through some rough stuff and have never had an issue. Thanks for watching!

    Hi Sam, what type of solar panel would fit in the weird indentation on the top of the roof? I see there are some loops to tie a solar panel to, but unless they are zip ties or something similar, it seems it would be hard to tie something into that space. Any idea what the manufacturer had in mind for that indentation?

    • @SamBischof
      @SamBischof  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      From what I understand that indentation was made for storage with the tie downs. Fitting a solar panel in that spot wouldn’t make much sense as you’d have to always park in a way to face the sun when the shell is open. I think you’d be better off with a flexible solar panel you can lay out in any orientation when you’re parked. So far I’ve found no real need for that spot up top. Thanks for watching!

    Thanks. Few questions:
    Why remove the shoe bags prior to folding up? Can they not stay?
    What would you do different when setting up (and breaking down) in a driving rain? Could you not do all the awnings from inside the tent?
    When opening the shell, how long is the period of time the underside of the mattress (at fold) is exposed to rain? How long for the mattress entry edge? (How wet might it get?

    • @SamBischof
      @SamBischof  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Ralf! Thanks for the questions! The shoe bags stay on full time now! I don't know why I was taking them on and off. I leave them on and everything closes just fine. The awnings can definitely be done from inside the tent, I did it last night in fact. It wasn't raining, but I didn't feel like climbing down to do it. If you are anticipating rain, I would suggest keeping the doors and windows zipped shut when closing it down. That way when you reopen in the rain there will be no way to get the mattress wet. There is no benefit to leaving them open while the tent is closed, You don't get any airflow in there with the hard shell down. I deployed mine in the rain recently just like this, and climbed in to a perfectly dry mattress. Hope that helps!

      I have camped in the rain and the snow in this tent. I have never heard of pooling water and never had an issue with that. You can definitely keep a condensation mat and some thin bedding. There's not a lot of storage while closed. A few items that squish flat wouldn't be an issue. As for closing it, that all depends on the height of your vehicle and your climbing ability! They do provide a nice strap to pull the lid down that a shorty would have no problem reaching :)

When looking at the specs of Tuff Stuff vs Roofnest again, the Tuff Stuff tent measures taller when closed, which I don't like. It also ways about 16 lbs more.
