i know a place near you that i plan on going to again that i would recommend you at least check out - it's Mt Baldy in the Colville Ntl forest. Just an old fire tower on top of a mountain. Really fun! Wouldn't camp near it though considering there's a bear den nearby. Not super crazy in terms of trail difficulty, i took a stock 2nd gen explorer up there. but it's cool!
Heck yeah! Just got done upgrading my Roofnest Falcon with all the amenities… and now I watched this and I’m thinking about getting one of these instead. 😆🤦♂️ Thanks Nate… 🤨 Haha, for real though, this thing looks amazing. Those side door rainflies got me sold. As always, awesome material. Thanks for your review! 🙏
Yeah, I wasn't expecting that. They asked if I had any good photos of the tent and I don't have a problem sharing considering they have sent me two tents to test... but didn't think it would make the main photo.
I bought the Galaxy 1.0 after much debate but I pull the trigger on it after your video about a year ago. I’ve been very happy with it. It’s my first RTT and a great budget friendly option. Thanks for the great videos! 💪🏻💪🏻💪🏻
Just got mine yesterday with the new improvements made after the first batch of 60 already shipped out. So far I’m impressed but it’s midnight and I haven’t had a chance to crawl around inside it yet.
I like the awnings on the sides. That way you can still camp with the doors zipped down during inclement weather. Down here in the southeast, it gets hot and muggy. Being able to leave the doors open and still have rain protection would be great way for staying cooler than not having any ventilation while it’s raining.
You're so right on the screen being outside the door. No tent I've ever had has been made that way. I say, think about your home. Does your screen door go inside your front door or sliding back door?
Just don't use it in a dusty desert area. The dust collects in the screen then sifts into your sleep space, on you and your gear, when you open inner flaps.
I still haven't found a pop out clam shell tent better than the FSR Aspen Lite series. It's a few bucks more than the Topoak. But it's better in just about every way. Extremely lightweight, that doesn't rob your payload like the Topoak and many others do. High quality construction. Hands down, the very best mattress of ANY RTT. All the features you can ask for. Diesel heater/AC/electric ports, insulated, the list goes on.
Aspen lite is a great tent IF you don't need to mount an awning to the side of the tent, you are OK not getting any crossbars or ability to carry anything significant on the tent and you are ok spending over $1000 more. And the mattress is the same 'tech' that people like Exped and amazon knock-offs have been doing for 10+ years. It also just adds to the setup / takedown time having to inflate / deflate the mattress - yeah I know you can buy rechargeable inflators for cheap but still more to deal with. The battle of weight, height, strength (accessory mounting options) and comfort is real - Pick your preference. I personally think the Intrepid Geo 2.5 is the best tent on the market - but too much overland tax on it. Waiting for a knockoff of that one at TopOak prices. 2nd fav is the regular FSR Aspen V2 XL.
After getting a hard shell tent myself, I have had half dozen people wanting to see it in action in the first month of owning it. Mine being a bit bigger than most “Skycamp” but for those who don’t have kids or smaller families this would be perfect! and the price is a great value! I checked their website site out to pass on info on the Topoak tent. A tent with all of its features plus capable add ons for $1499 and $499 for shipping to Canada still beats the rest in this category. I tried your discount code to get a final price of $1848 US. Topoak’s next decision is to find a Canadian distributor? Thanks for the info! I like the cameo on the back of your rig.
My biggest complian is width of this type of tent all about 52 inch. Roofnest has XL ver that is 57 in. More space in hot weather with your traveler is important I think .
Excellent review of this RTT and playing Devil’s advocate. I was teetering between different mid-ranged tents and I think you have me finally sold on this one. All those other expensive RTTs out there can flash their brand and price tag on vehicles but it’s all about usability, quality finish, practicality combined with the bottom line $$$. I think this has it all for those who are ok not branding a status symbol. I think people should shop wisely according to their needs and how often they use their tents. Is it two seasons a year with a few weekends each or much more than that. Thanks for your comparison as well to the 1.0 and all the upgrades included to show how the 2.0 is better.
After watching a few recent 1.0 reviews, it appears a lot of these changes they made carried over to the newer 1.0s. I.e, cross bar clips instead of Velcro, condensation vents up top, etc
Went camping about 5-6 weeks ago with leftover 4 in of snow on the ground, not expecting the trmps to dive down to 5°F in the night 😅 Gazelle T3 went well 🇨🇦
How about making a suggestion with the S hinges for the bottom where they join for more feet space with a nice vent and with the pop out extra part on the back? That would be the ultimate tent.
Pulled the trigger after watching your video! gonna be our first RTT! so excited to enjoy it with the family! mine should be ready for pickup in August! thanks for the discount code!
You should consider doing a video short of you inside the tent showing how dark the new black layers really or how much light creeps in. Good video regardless.
Now all they need to do is make this RTT have a flap that integrates with the awning so you can climb up from a protected area into a dry tent! Make it zipable or snap so you can use it or not. Be an amazing option to add!!!
So cool! I custom made a similar rain awning design for my GoFast Camper driver side tent door. I can attest, having a rain covering like that makes it so much nicer to get in/out when it's pouring rain. Being able to take my rain jacket off before climbing inside the tent keeps everything so much drier inside, and if you park nose into the wind, the side awnings don't catch the wind
This is great almost bought ovs mamba tent. Love that this has shade on side windows and is cheaper too... going by your word its good and ordering one asap.
So YOU picked up the DirtLifestyle 80! Nice. Followed that build closely but felt the low-lift approach really let it down. But whatever. It's great hearing the familiar I6 hum in the background of a good overland channel. Good video. Still on the fence about RTTs. Both for price and function. Saw your swag video, but boy are they pricey for what they are. Still pushing $1200+ for the tent and cot. Will figure out something at some point. Happy Trails!
Maybe the side awnings roll up and tie back when you don't want them? That's the only thing I don't like, I get the rain benefit but I mostly camp in decent weather and don't want to have to put those up every time just to see out and have the windows open. Otherwise a great looking tent, I hope this puts all the 4k tents in check. The U bar support is far superior to roofnest, glad to see that.
@@OutdoorAuto is it really 178lbs tho? That is a touch on the heavy side but I think my iKamper skycamp 2.0 is more than it says, I just haven't had time to weigh it... because it's a pita to remove! LoL
Sounds great. I saw you had this on your flatbed truck. Was the mounting installation an easy work around? I was going to put it on a trailer with a raised flat wood deck. Is there a condensation issue?
9:02 - That looks like a grounding washer, not a lock washer. It were a lock washer it's in the wrong place. Should be directly under the screw head so the screw doesn't back out
Interesting, I’ll have to take a closer look. I thought they were the locking wedge style washers for anti vibration… kinda look similar from the side.
Roof top tents are pretty good and solid now, even any amazon knockoffs. Theres one feature what i would like to see in Roof tents, some kind of easy and solid way to attach diesel heater house instead of stickig it between zipper. Some hookup and integrated vents or whatever. I live in Canada and nights can be pretty cold even when its +30 during day.....and winter?
Great video - really appreciate the detailed review. On the Galaxy 2.0, the side canopy is a great idea, but you end up losing that larger side door/window and therefore ambient lighting. When you tested both, did the 1.0 have noticeably more ambient natural lighting than the 2.0? Living in the SE during humid summers, any additional open screening for enhanced air movement is appreciated. If natural light and airflow are key, would you recommend the 1.0 over the 2.0 model? Or do the upgrades, in your opinion, outweigh any reduced ambient lighting and airflow? Wonder if TopOak plans to incorporate all the structural and hardware upgrades on the 1.0 that you discussed for the 2.0 on this video. Thanks again.
Thanks for a great review. Can Top Oak please bring this to the Australian market??? Rooftop tents are extremely poor value in Aus, with only a couple of brands making reasonably priced tents
I know you hinted at topoak having a new clamshell coming out. Now that the vision is out, have you had a chance to take a peak at it to see your thoughts for its stupid amazing price?
Looks like you went up poison creek, one of my favorite places. I own a Thule Tepui Autana with annex that will comfortably sleep six if you use the lower annex tent. I got it on an inventory winter sale for the same price as the Naturnest, and I am very😅 pleased with its performance.
Just lacks a heater hose vent, for super cold 4-season camping. I would rather use a diesel heater outside and run a hose attachment to tent vent, than a Little Buddy propane heater in the tent interior. For this reason, I'm leaning toward a 2024 RoofTop Falcon series.
Regarding the screen on the outside that you don't agree with. I tried out an rtt, in the desert, with the screen outside. It collected dust. When I opened the inner flap it shook the dust inside on my sleep system and where I laid to look at the sunrise.
I absolutely love the idea of the skylight; I’d be able to take my bottle girl stargazing in the comfort of the tent! My question about it, however, would be what kind of maintenance does that require? It seems like it’s just plastic, so I wonder if you need to do something to keep it from yellowing or cracking over time.
I haven't had issues with that and we run one of these that is over a year old... but one thing is, the tent skylight really doesnt' see that much sun... most the time the tent is closed....
Hi , I love your channel , you are extremely informative, I’m based in UAE (Dubai) I’m very new into off-roading / over landing , need your suggestion will this be advisable to fit on a gladiator and also my biggest disappointment is that Topoak doesn’t deliver to my region if you can help me out it will be great to find a solution, thanks cheers
Thank you for super informative video and the discount code. What about the painted black aluminium shell? does it get incredibly hot in the sun? how long can you sleep in on a sunny summer morning before the heat or the sun on the tent and the shell makes it unbearable to be inside the tent? I am really thinking of getting one Galaxy for my car here in Europe :)
Great video. Definitely looks like an awesome RTT. I had my eye on the 1.0 version but this one looks much nicer. Just got a nice Gazelle T4 Overland Edition tent I will use coming up soon. I will probably end up with a RTT and this one might be the one to get at that time.
You are absolutly right... One thing that gets you is the import tax... so it isn't just shipping + Product.... it is also tax.... they reach out to me all the time asking if I want to "start a tent brand".... obviously I am not going there...
Looking at midsize pickups which have the short beds. Besides iKamper, who’s making awesome side foldout tents with the hard tops (like a Skycamp)? I’m looking to mount the RTT on a shorter bed rack so that the top of it is at or below the cab of the truck.
This is certainly a great looking tent and a definite improvement over "Gen1" but what are the advantages of having a RTT over a ground tent? I'm just not convinced. Having an extra 175 lbs. (or whatever) bolted to the roof while transversing an off-camber trail doesn't leave me with a good feeling. Taking a leak in the middle of the night becomes more involved. Critters can climb ladders, so security isn't enhanced. And, if you spend more than one night at a campsite, you just can't take off and explore. I guess there is an application where a RTT is superior, I just can't figure that out yet. LMK. I do appreciate the review. I think it was thorough. Maybe there's a video you can do where you compare going on a trip or two where you use each type of tent. Thanks.
In my somewhat limited experience with both rtt and ground camping, the main advantages of the rtt for me are cleanliness and ease of use. Here in Scandinavia it rains a lot, and quite often muddy. Packing a tent with a muddy base not a huge problem, but I really dislike it. Apart from wiping down your ladder, mud isn't really a thing you deal with rtt camping. Setting up an rtt, even a softshell kukenam like I have, is easier and quicker than most ground tents. Add to this the fact that you can leave pillows, sleeping bags, blankets etc in the rtt when packed up, the rtt is just a more hassle-free experience. This as you mention comes at the drawback of poorly placed weight. Softshells are generally lighter, mine weighs 60 kg or 130 lbs, and I don't really feel the weight unless taking a tight turn at high speed, and the rollover point is still far beyond what I have the balls to do haha. Another drawback is the price, you could get a whole, great ground camp setup for the price of just an rtt. Rtt's are definitely not for everyone, but even with the drawbacks I still prefer rtt camping.
Put on a vinyl wrap on the hood then cover it in stickers. Cheap, easy enough to do yourself on large relatively flat panel and then your paint will remain intact underneath if you ever change your mind or sell it.
This was originally Dirt Lifestyle Nate’s “Land Cruiser 80” Lexus build and he did a full series on it. One of the things he did was ask all of his viewers to send him stickers, and that’s what went on the hood. Pretty cool honestly
Thanks! Just purchased one. Where do you camp out by Jump Creek? The website says it is day use only. Or was the drive to test to see if the tent rattled off the vehicle?
You’ve got to be kidding me. I just ordered the 1.0 eight days ago and it won’t be in stock for pick up until 6/3. I’ll try to see if they will let me cancel that pre-order and upgrade to the 2.0, which the site says I can pick up now. Wish they would have told me it was coming. Ugh.
people usuall just zip the diesel heater tub into a door... the awnings would help in this case if it was raining... with a lot of diesel heaters you need to get an extension hose to make that work.
@outdoorauto anyway to contact them. I places my order for pickup right when your video came out. Super excited and since you said they had 60 in stock I was extra pumped and pulled the trigger. I figured I would get something for how to pick it up but still nothing. I have also email with no response. Hoping maybe you have a better line of communication as I can get it tomorrow but then won’t be able to get out to pick it up for like a week. Thanks!
I know they monitor the comments… I’m pretty sure they are just catching up… that’s the problem with doing a video in a good product is it usually sells out super fast and the companies get slammed… I’ll drop an email…
Thank you. They emailed me this morning. Probably they are busy and I also didn’t realize the support email was not US based so we are on way different time zones. I will be heading out to pick it up today. Thank you for the review and the email. I was also waiting for the 1.0 to come back in stock which I feel like is still a solid option. But with the updates and coupon code I was sold on 2.0. Thanks again! @outdoorauto
Hi, anyone had issues with the Topoak being too small? I'm 5'10, and ive been in the regular Evo 3. It was enough but not much to spare. Looks like the Galaxy 2 is smaller still by a hair? Thoughts on size? Any word on whether they would release an XL model? Thanks!
@@OutdoorAuto Thank you! the site says it's 79" interior, do you find that that's accurate? At 6'4", hat only gives you 3 inches, do you seep lengthwise on your back? Also, have you had success folding 2 pillows and 2 sleeping bags inside? The rest can go in the car but that would be really nice.
Camping Season is Here... Anybody been getting out?
i know a place near you that i plan on going to again that i would recommend you at least check out - it's Mt Baldy in the Colville Ntl forest. Just an old fire tower on top of a mountain. Just went this weekend with the two toddlers! Blast
Going to Overland Adventure Summit in Kentucky in June. You gonna be there? Oh yeah I just received my OpenRoad Peak Roof LT RTT.
Haven't actually camped, but spent the day hanging in hammocks in some of my favorite mountains in Montana
Heck yeah! Just got done upgrading my Roofnest Falcon with all the amenities… and now I watched this and I’m thinking about getting one of these instead. 😆🤦♂️ Thanks Nate… 🤨
Haha, for real though, this thing looks amazing. Those side door rainflies got me sold. As always, awesome material. Thanks for your review! 🙏
I love how on the website the picture for the 2.0 is the orange Lexus
Yeah, I wasn't expecting that. They asked if I had any good photos of the tent and I don't have a problem sharing considering they have sent me two tents to test... but didn't think it would make the main photo.
Seriously! Let's see if they stay at $1600.
I bought the Galaxy 1.0 after much debate but I pull the trigger on it after your video about a year ago. I’ve been very happy with it. It’s my first RTT and a great budget friendly option. Thanks for the great videos! 💪🏻💪🏻💪🏻
Any issues with the galaxy 1.0 ?
I’ve had no issue. 💪🏻
Just got mine yesterday with the new improvements made after the first batch of 60 already shipped out. So far I’m impressed but it’s midnight and I haven’t had a chance to crawl around inside it yet.
Any feedback yet?

Just don't use it in a dusty desert area. The dust collects in the screen then sifts into your sleep space, on you and your gear, when you open inner flaps.
Have you thought about doing a review of the Topoak Vision?
I still haven't found a pop out clam shell tent better than the FSR Aspen Lite series. It's a few bucks more than the Topoak. But it's better in just about every way. Extremely lightweight, that doesn't rob your payload like the Topoak and many others do. High quality construction. Hands down, the very best mattress of ANY RTT. All the features you can ask for. so true about the doors being on the bottom. good choice they did
Any updates? Going to pick mine up in LA next week!
I would love to see someone review the TopOak Nebula, I like that the nebula has the lift at the front of the wedge creating more usable space.
lol… well I am filming that right now actually… so coming soon.
@OutdoorAuto very cool, I assume the weight is a big issue

100% agree, that would be awesome.

What type of mounting system because I drive my jeep back and forth daily and I don’t want it on the jeep until I need it .
I really like this tent, thks for your share.

have you figured how to attach the shoe bags outside? i cannot get it
How has it held up in rain? Does it leak anywhere? I live in Michigan and we get a lot of bad weather.
I think it's ok before sun rises, especially in Europe
Great video. Definitely looks like an awesome RTT. I had my eye on the 1.0 version but this one looks much nicer. Just got a nice Gazelle T4 Overland Edition tent I will use coming up soon. I will probably end up with a RTT and this one might be the one to get at that time.
Will this tent fit on a Nissan rogue. I have side rails what crossbars would you recommend? Thanks
I talked with some manufacturers in China. 400-600 +shipping. All of these tents that look the same do so because they are.
You are absolutly right... One thing that gets you is the import tax... so it isn't just shipping + Product.... it is also tax.... they reach out to me all the time asking if I want to "start a tent brand".... obviously I am not going there...
Yes, that's right. But Topoak has customer serive at least, I don't even know where I can get it repaired if I buy a tent from Alibaba
Thanks.
Have you watched this video I made - th-cam.com/video/Oo7xdAmYQq4/w-d-xo.html
I love the idea of sticker bombing my hood… just can bring myself to doing it on my new ish truck.
Maybe you need a 2nd hood from a salvage yard... 😂
How about to compare 4 K RTt vs Aluc Cab RTT. What do you think about ?.
Great review. I'm 6'4" will I fit.
Just following up on the question posted a month ago. Would appreciate your opinion and response. Thanks
what size & thread bolts, nuts are used in the mounting kit?
I would like to see them make an opening for a diesel heater for people who like to camp in the winter time
Thanks! Just purchased one. Where do you camp out by Jump Creek? The website says it is day use only. Or was the drive to test to see if the tent rattled off the vehicle?
You have to go up above it into the BLM land. There are some really good views up there.
How would you rate the insulation value of the tent? I.e. Would it work for late fall, early winter camping in the midwest.
The 2.0 isn’t on the site? Is it going to come back in stock?
They decided to call the 2.0 the Stellar… it is on back order/pre order - back in stock Aug 20th - geni.us/S0fNvVk
Ugh.
i want to know how those corners take on a sideways rain, is the bottom ported to drain water?
Anyone know the distance between the mounting rails?
How is the quality and comfortability of the mattress?
Sold out already. You called it.
How would it work with a diesel heater or what would you recommend for heating for cold weather camping or fall desert nights.
people usuall just zip the diesel heater tub into a door... the awnings would help in this case if it was raining... with a lot of diesel heaters you need to get an extension hose to make that work.
Do you thinks it’s available in Europe? Or can be delivered in Europe (Switzerland)?!
Im really unfamiliar with these. What type of rack should I get for my first gen tacoma that is compatible with this tent
Will this tent sleep 3? Two adults and a petite teenager? If not do you have any recommendations for a larger tent.
topoak has Vision for family users now.
@MikeC-mo1el Thank you!
great video!
Does Topoak ship to Europe?
Do you have to season this tent prior to first rain?
given the choice of one, would you choose the Galaxy (which does have some upgrades) or the stellar (galaxy 2.0)?
What’s the best 4 person hard shell tent? I’m 6’6 and need something big
Is this tent capable of being blacked out from externally lighting?
Thank you. My order number is 1571. 👍
My geoadventure gear RTT was $600 shipped back in 2017.
Ahhh... the good ole days.
@@OutdoorAuto yup
Hi, anyone had issues with the Topoak being too small? I'm 5'10, and ive been in the regular Evo 3. It was enough but not much to spare. Looks like the Galaxy 2 is smaller still by a hair? Thoughts on size? Any word on whether they would release an XL model? Thanks!
I’m 6’4 and my wife is 6’1” and we both sleep in it no problem… 🤷♂️
@@OutdoorAuto Thank you! the site says it's 79" interior, do you find that that's accurate? At 6'4", hat only gives you 3 inches, do you seep lengthwise on your back? Also, have you had success folding 2 pillows and 2 sleeping bags inside? The rest can go in the car but that would be really nice.
How does it give you more room inside when the popouts are purely shade based?
The rear out isn’t shade based gives you tons more room inside the tent to change… sit up etc.
Good video. I’m 6’3. Will I fit in the tent? Thanks
I am 6'4" and it works for me... but probably that is about the max.
@@OutdoorAuto this is sleeping straight with a 2nd person and your feet are comfortable at the end?
One thing that is stopping me from getting this right now is a lack of diesel heater port :(
I usually just zip them in… I wish more tents had ports.
