To all of you who say the drummer is boring, he's playing what they call a "pocket groove". Pocket grooves may be the simplest of drumming techniques, but it gives everyone in the song a steady rhythm and the space to do their own thing in the song. Now imagine if the drums sounded like wild gnats buzzing with a solo, or there being no drums at all, what we'd be hearing is noise.
A simple, but effective beat like this brings everything together musically. In context, it's not about how good you can play, but playing according to the song's needs. Otherwise, this should just be a song about instrument solos, not a story about "Billie Jean"
    Great cover by Cory Henry.

Pocket Grooves in a song like this is actually very hard, keeping tempo and precision playing the same beat over and over again is incredibly difficult. I don’t even think someone like Travis Parker could do that. Different skill set. Drummer is incredible

Philip Roa Damn straight! Good drummers will get this! Those who criticise are likely still early in their learning curve and might come back to this in a few years and realise how good the drumming is. Lest face it, ALL the musicians in this outfit are all top notch - a mediocre drummer wouldn’t be allowed anywhere near!

@@JesseKreis Indeed, Violinists seem to move in concert altogether and they move a lot, but the movement is to make the instrument enhance the right "colour" of the notes.
What I'm trying to say here is that you know stuff is funky when Violinists ignore the academic movement and have a "violinspirit.exe not found, replacing with standard rythym.exe" kind of moment.

Yes hahaha! I was a teenage symphony violinist and we were not allowed to tap our feet to the rhythm, even classical music sometimes has its own groove and tapping your foot helps keep you right on the beat in complicated passages. We were told to wiggle our toes inside of our shoes so the audience could not see us doing that nasty thing, grooving to the beat. I later quit violin and became a disco-funk house band singer (in the 70s) when good bands could get steady full time work, and later, a jazz dancer. Then I didn't have to hide my sense of rhythm.

6:45 is the payoff. The whole thing is utter magic but when the “original” groove drops its like an enormous sense of relief. The tension before is what makes this engrossing.

To everyone who "undig" the drummer, I would say that what he does here is extremely difficult (keep tempo in the pocket) and exactly what is called for when playing a complex, multi-layered arrangement and with an orchestra (brass, strings, backings, etc.) like that.
