    While Vectored Thrust is the correct term for what you’re talking about, VTOL is not an abbreviation for Vectored Thrust and actually means something slightly different. VTOL stands for Vertical TakeOff and Landing, and refers to ANY aircraft which can take off from the ground vertically without a runway, whether that is achieved by vectored thrust or not. Harriers, Ospreys, and (Marine Corps Variant) F-35s are VTOL aircraft, but so are regular helicopters, balloons, and most vanilla Space engineers air vehicles. The reason why it’s talked about as such a feature for Harriers, (Marine Corps Variant) F-35s, and Ospreys is because they are PLANES with all the speed and fuel efficiency advantages that entails, while ALSO having VTOL capacity, which is not normal for planes, so they get the best of both worlds, with the ability to take off and land anywhere but still get the full advantage of being a plane once in the air. So many of these USE the vectored thrust system because otherwise you’d need two entirely different sets of engines for the two different modes of flight, carrying unnecessary extra weight and being less efficient, but doing so would still make it just as much a VTOL craft-and in a world like space engineers where the thrust to weight ratio is much more manageable it’s still a nice material and energy savings to use vectored thrust, but not nearly as big of one.

      Yup. Vectored Thrust however is a big deal in modern aircraft. The F-22, F-35, and the latest Russian Mig have them. Nozzels on the exhaust direct the energy off of the engine's axis...albiet, no where near 90 degrees used for "VTOL" aircraft. Its what makes those planes HIGHLY maneuverability.

    Okay got it working, what people don't tell you is, you have to enable experimental mode by going into settings and ticking the box. Then you have to go to game settings on your world, got to mods and then advanced and click on a box that says enable scripts. After that load the game and it should work. It's silly no one tells you this when you're new.

    It's been buggy ever since the wasteland update. Thrusters will spin and jitter wildly, sometimes destroying themselves or the rotor. It's been reported many times on the workshop comments, so hopefully the author is fixing it, as it is pretty a pretty darn cool way to keep mass down.

    • @dedompler
      @dedompler 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The rotors just need to be aligned with the center of mass. You can see how this gets tricky with mining ships.

    • @dansiegel995

      Its not necessary, but recommended, just like any flying vehicle. In the example, his aft thruster (and the only thruster for lift) was as far away from the center of mass as possible. This worked because he had over-engineered the craft....yes, with only 1 thruster. That single thruster can lift many times the mass of this tiny 'ship'. Because its not on the center of mass, it acted like a lever and would work but use much more power than necessary to lift that mass off the ground. If he put a symmetrical vert thruster on the forward side of the ship, he would have thrust symmetry, and the amount of energy used by those 2 thrusters would be less than the energy used by the single thruster (albiet you do have more mass) In summary, the further away from the exact center of mass, the more inefficient your engines will be unless you have symmetrical engines to compensate. Due to gravity, its best to always put thrust symmetry to fight gravity in the up/down/pitch direction, although not have having thrust symmetry in the other directions can cause some roll and yaw as well. And technically, this can happen in zero G, however I'm certain it won't - in space engineers, mass does not create gravity. If you created a long bar of blocks and put one thruster perpendicular to those blocks at one of the two end points, in SE you will move those blocks perfectly. In reality, you would begin to spin on the axis of the bar's CoG.

  • @carterbrockman4223
    @carterbrockman4223 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I think the second script didn't work for you because you miss-named your thrusters. Your top thruster is forward and backward thrust, as well as side to side. And your rear thruster read as thruster3 by default in the grid menu because you misplaced it the first time and had to delete and add a new, making that the 3rd thruster added to the grid. That one definitely should not have been your "roll" thruster because it's mainly used for pitch and yaw... or it would be, if yaw was really in the game.

    I'm certain you failed on the 2nd script because you got the rotors mixed up. Also the aft thruster on your 2nd script ship was placed one block too low, causing a very bad problem. It was not correctable, due to how fast the thruster rotated and hit the ground, giving you a fatal amount of negative pitch right on takeoff.
