I have an embarrassing amount of hours in this game and I've been playing since launch. I cannot explain why these 'how to' starter youtube videos are just still so enjoyable.

Rather than mess with wheel strength to connect my Rovers, I just use half blocks in the docking bay. It works every time.

For added stability against roll-overs I like building the chassis 3 blocks wide.
Placement for gyros, small batteries, timer blocks, cargo connectors, etc. can replace some of the middle row of chassis blocks.

I'm pretty sure 'R' is the default key for switching grid sizes. I didn't even know there was a key for this until recently. You can also just select the block in your toolbar again (keep hitting 9 in your case for the landing gear) to toggle between grid sizes. Personally I build my vehicles attached to my base (via connectors, rotors or hinges) and get the batteries placed and built as soon as possible so they can charge while I'm building the rest of the vehicle.

For the bumpers, using 1x1 wheel suspensions would actually do a better job at protecting a craft from a crash. Just make sure to set them to no steering, propulsion and zero friction. Could also put them on with the hubs facing the ground so then falling off the cliff is more doable. I've seen then save an entire craft from a dead drop, going full speed and bounce harmlessly off the ground. Another benefit of doing the ground ones is that when you want to jump something at speed. Most of the time you'll end up scraping the ground, those wheels prevent that.

Thank you for making this video. I've just followed it step by step and now have a working cargo rover. I'd particularly like to compliment the very clear and easy to understand and follow way you took us through the set-up menus, showing how to group wheels and hide things, and best of all, how to change settings like power, steering and heights. It was truly helpful. Much appreciated.

Awww, Lunar, you didn't build an 8x8! :(
My current rover (I call it the Spider, because it's of the black colour and the wheels) is an 8 wheeler, with 1 h202 generator feeding 2 hydrogen engines, 2 batteries, and 2 medium cargo containers. I'm also using the 5x5 wheels, and it has 8 gyros; one for each wheel. I acknowledge that the gyros might be overkill, but I spawned in a mountainous ice field, and I virtually never flip with it. It can carry around 20,000 kg of ore with no real difference in speed or performance, either; although I usually run it at about 45 ms.
I'm glad you told people about the blast doors, though. My Spider has them all over the undercarriage, two rows at the bottom for bumpers, and a row all around the top. They really do help.

A simple and pretty versatile looking rover. I can see adapting that basic design to accomplish lot's of different missions or tasks. Thanks!

Not only does using a landing gear give you a stable and locked down origin to build from, it also establishes a grid's origin and starting orientation. If you build without one, say in space, you can end up with odd orientations when it comes time to use it with a projector.

  • @jmcorp8021

if you just use one piston with a landing gear set to auto lock when you extend the piston it will lift the whole thing straight up. you don't need 6 pistons.

instead of having gyros dedicated to flipping you, you can just use ur normal gyros, but instead of turning the entire gyro on and off, just turn the override on and off. theres an option for it in the toolbar control

I would use some cobalt to make the chassis in heavy armor. Suspensions are solid, but will instead transmit damage to surrounding blocs in case of big shock. I would also triple it between the suspensions just in case one bloc breaks, two are still holding. I will extend front and rear bumpers in front of the wheels to protect them. I'll also build one blast blocs rail on each to corner of the rover, just in case of upside down flip, just in case [;oD Maybe you should add Build info and build vision mods, because they are so useful to begineers to understand blocs specs

Splitsie uses RTX-Voice (I think) to remove some of the noise in his videos, the birds outside his "Shed" for example. Is there a way to do something similar to your keyboard switch noise? I can tell yours is the keyboard but some TH-camrs it sounds like they are chomping on a wad of gum with their mouth open.

They are your videos so you don't have to. At least I can identify that yours is a keyboard. There is another TH-camr that does SE videos that sounds like they have a huge wad of gum in their mouth that they are trying to talk around so I do Thank You for not doing that.
