    I have been a Scale 75 fanatic when I got their velvet skin tones. They are fantastically amazing, work good in an airbrush wit thinner. I am glad to see you review with all the crazy GW contrast kitch right now. My goto is vallejo and scale 75. Good to hear and see some of the paints used a little. Wanted to get back into some model painting whilst I'm out abroad in China for a few years, so need to pick things up from scratch (paints, tools, everything), and Scale 75 kept appearing a fair bit when searching on the online retailers here. Was teetering, and now feel more confident picking some up and going with them, instead of the usual ones I've gone for in the past.

      Sometimes I feel like people confuse "Vallejo Metal Color" with "metal colours in the different Vallejo ranges."
      Not sure if this is the case here... but it's a common thing I've seen around the internet.
      I will say though that the Scalecolor Gold and Copper sets do help fill the gap that the single gold and copper tones in the Metal Color range leave.
      I should probably try and use some ink with the Metal Color to get some more tones.

    I'd heard so many good things about these paints for a good couple of years and christmas just passed my other half bought me the full set.

    No.
    I still have use for some of may citadel paints/shades. There's a few Vallejo I still love to use. But Scale75 are nice, I wouldn't be unhappy if they were the only paints I had access to.

    Great info Luke. I bought both sets of these paints earlier this year. (Fantasy and games and scalecolor ranges) They have made me a different painter if not actually better. They are two additional weapons in a painter's arsenal as each range is slightly different. I also have army painter's complete range ( slightly different again) and Secret Weapon's three sets. All are good at some things but not others. Some are great layering paints and some make the best glazes. l'm still experimenting but l hardly ever touch my citadel range anymore. If you only use citadel paint at the moment, any of these paint ranges will change your game. Citadel paints are quite difficult to use to get good results l find and IMHO very expensive for the quality. Citadel's washes and technical stuff are great however and shouldn't be overlooked.

    The metallics have the most incredibly fine flakes, and they work excellently with an airbrush, without thinning.

    • @michaeladams1557
      @michaeladams1557 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've had the exact opposite experience. Tried airbrushing Dwarf Gold straight through the brush with a 0.5 needle and even at 30 PSI I couldn't get anything to flow through. Completely plugged my brush. That's after shaking on a mechanical shaker for a good 30 seconds. Likewise, brushing on the same gold, it took me four coats to get a good solid base coat over a black primer. Yeah, they have fine grain, but the coverage is crap, and it feels like it wants to lift off the previous coats if you don't wait a good 10-15 minutes between coats.

    • @avantasiaftw
      @avantasiaftw 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@michaeladams1557 Sounds like you didnt thin the paint, I use a 0.4 needle and have had no problems whatsoever but I dont use thinners, only water and flow improver, maybe your thinner is the culprit? Also most golds have an issue going over black, especially the bright colours.

    • @michaeladams1557
      @michaeladams1557 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@avantasiaftw You are correct I didn't thin it. You'll notice that duckster313 claimed they worked excellently, without thinning. I was just pointing out that, in my experience, that wasn't a correct statement.
      Once upon a time the expectation was that if you were going to paint metallics, you needed to prime black for best results. Now I'm using these on a 1/8 scale figure so I'm covering a LOT more area than usual. I suspect on a standard 28-32mm I wouldn't have the same coverage issues.

    • @avantasiaftw
      @avantasiaftw 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@michaeladams1557 Oh right, yeah there is no chance they are going through an airbrush without thinning. There are a couple of ways to help with painting gold on a black primer, a coat of brown can help a lot, or painting a silver first or maybe building up from a darker gold colour.

    whoever said "they're very transparent" meant "they're amazing for glazing because they separate well from the medium and take to thinning really really well, unlike most brands of paint that rely on larger chunks of pigment size within their paints" - S75; also has 2 "things" youll notice when you use them; 1; Some "reds" are better for base/layer colours 2; some "reds" are better for thinning down to glaze with. and that's one of the negatives of S75; however, if you are someone confident with experimenting and applying your paint/techniques; youll get a lot of reward with a little patience with S75s range.

    Hi Luke, I'm no gamer but stumbled across your site on here when searching for tecnics , I build 1/35 scale armour WW2 mainly the Eastern Front, so why look at your site. Well it's done with skill and most importantly fun, we all like to aim for the best but having fun while we do it is important. Interesting points on the paints, I use both ab and brush working with Vallejo Colour and Air. When brush painting use a wet pallet. The description of the paints you showed makes me think the pigment could well be in a liquid form, a very fine ground dry pigment first then added with a gel carrier. The shot of the blue, wow , seeing the variations as you brushed has me seriously considering trying them out. At 71 I need to try as many modelling ideas as possible. Keep up the good work . 👍 Thanks

    Glad you have done this on Scale 75. I feel like i'm on the same level as you Luke and these "pro" painters have been doing S75 an injustice- almost like this is their pancea to greatness and no one else shall achieve their results- rubbish! hands down these are the finest paints I have used in 30 thirty years and their Metallics are second to none. not a big company from Spain, but they have the honesty to make paint with proper pigment levels. Buy a set of inks and you will never need to buy anything else because again the pigmentation is off the scale and always need thinning. Only really backing up all the other comments, but Im glad you have found these amazing paints. Great job and keep up the good work.

I bought the blood and fire color set and haven't had a chance to try em out yet, only because I really haven't had time, I'm trying to work through a backlog before I give them a proper run myself.

    Please do more of these - especially how much you thin, working on a wet palette, airbrushing and so on.
    Oddly, despite so many saying how great they are there is amazingly little out there about them - I'd love to chip in having bought both lines (ScaleColor and Fantasy) and am struggling with how to use them on a wet palette - I'm beginning to think unless you're glazing don't thin which just seems odd.
    If it helps at all there is very much a difference between the two lines, fantasy is more satin and thinner - I'd love to see how Scale75 write up the difference, which reminds me - I'll drop you a note with the various guides I found online which are freely available from Scale75 which you could link to as you're working through the sets.

Also you should use their thinner. For Priming okay. On the other Hand, scale needed a lot of thinning. Only tried the skin color so far, but mixed in some Vallejo flow improver and thinner. Maybe its possibel by just using half water, half thinner

    I prefer the scalecolor fantasy for brush painting, because they are like the regular scalecolor on easy mode. Pop a glob on your wet palette and you can paint quick and smooth immediately, not as totally matte as the regular scalecolor and it is a smaller range with less variation of colour, but it is still a great set for miniature painting.
    Some of the cool features about scalecolor are: Retarder in the paint (This slows drying time and increases working time, you can always use a hairdryer to dry quicker or add a liquid acrylic retarder from AK interactive.) Highly pigmented (Will cover well and colour strongly, or can thin down to glazes with mediums and still keep a colour without fading saturation too strongly.) Matte Finish (Although as Luke says (Thanks Luke) they dry very matte, they advantage while painting is you can see where you have made a mistake or the paint hasn't covered an edge properly, before your finishing matte varnish coat goes down. If you are painting highlights by hand, you aren't getting spoofed by highlights left by your work lights and the satin finish of other paints.) Range (The range is huge, even bigger when you include the metallics, inks, war and fantasy ranges. But also because they sell their paints primarily in sets, you can build a paint collection quickly and often more affordably than alternative brands and since you buy in colour ranges, if you are painting a chapter or army with one or two central colours, you can buy a box and have variations on that colour right away.)
    Downsides are: Washes wont work over them properly as they are too matte and there isn't a low enough surface tension for the wash to differentiate between detail on the model and fine texture created by the paint. Thicker paint means you really need to learn thinning your paints correctly, be it with water or with thinning agents, this can be intimidating to a new painter who hasn't gotten that feel for how thin the paint should be yet and a pre-thinned airbrush paint might be more appealing. Thicker more highly pigmented paints mean that the scalecolor paints are harder to shake up before usage, even a bead or bearing will get stuck in them at times and not move. An electric paint mixer either one of the cheap drinks mixer style ones you dip in, or a varnish shaker / vortex shaker can be your friend there, or else there is always sticking in a cocktail stick or similar to use as a paint stirrer.

    • @grantkrick6005
      @grantkrick6005 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Do you find the Fantasy Range is easier to use an all over wash on? I love ScaleColor for my special models, but I would like a range that I speed paint with and I love Scale 75s colors. If you can wash over them, is it like Vallejo/Citadel ease of use, or is it still tricky?

    • @lunahula
      @lunahula 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@grantkrick6005 Tricky, I think you are okay with a pin wash, I think I did that on some test models with the fantasy range. Though I have to say that any paints without a gloss coat will not really fully work with a shade/wash as that literally forces them into recesses. But the joy of washes/shade's is that they are slow drying, so you can have time to mend a mistake with a damp (not wet) brush to move wash that has settled where you don't want it around. If you find you need more time, then just add a liquid acrylic retarder to your wash. Hope this helps!

      @@lunahula Thanks for the quick response! So what I am gathering is the Fantasy Range takes washes just as bad as the Scalecolor range?

    • @lunahula
      @lunahula 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@grantkrick6005 Not quite as badly, I would describe the fantasy range as matte-satin while the ordinary scalecolor range is like ultra-matte. But I think if you want an easier time of using washes then yeah you will still want to use a layer of gloss to take down surface tension.
