I noted that going back up on the South Kaibab trail has less elevation gain than going up via Bright Angel. Just sharing. Thanks for this video. I am hoping to do this adventure to Phantom Ranch one day!
Thanks for watching! South Kaibab is very steep, and there is no water access. Bright Angel has water spigots and a smaller grade on the way out. We liked having water access!
Up SK has more elevation gain. It's 4,714' from Phantom (10.5% ave. grade) and BA is 4,314' (9.0% ave. grade) as BA trailhead is 400' lower. SK is 2 miles shorter but def steeper, higher, and no water.
We were planning on making the hike rim to rim, but we got to basin and everyone was cramping due to the heat. No way we were making it back up, luckily 2 of the cabins with AC opened up. We paid the 200 a night and woke up early the next morning to start back up. Fun trip but we were not prepared!

How long was the hike?
On the way down, South Kaibab was around 8. On the way up, Bright Angel was around 9.5 miles from the Phantom Ranch
