My wife and I were fortunate to have had Tex as one of our wranglers on our two-day trip to Phantom Ranch. Tex is a very friendly and helpful guide. In this video you see how beautiful the inner canyon is, how nice the mules are and how helpful and accommodating the wranglers are. However it doesn't prepare you for the sheer terror you may feel riding high on your mule as you descend for the first time on the steep Bright Angel Trail. Even so you finally adjust and end up loving every minute. Thank you Tex and our trusty steeds Mayberry & CJ.
@@lisaphikes You may not believe knowing how challenged I was going down, but shortly after we returned to the Rim I said to Bobbie "We should do it again!"
I asked for a trip to Phantom Ranch for my 12th birthday in 1977 and was very fortunate to go on the ride with my parents who are now both gone. Thanks for the video and the happy memories it brought.
I'm fortunate enough to have "Muled The Canyon" twice, once in 94, and again in 98, with my wife and 2 sons who were just young boys at the time, and I was just about the age they are today, what wonderful memories. 💞
Tex we enjoyed our ride with you back in May with our friend Hermine (81 years young). She is so happy she did this trip that she tells everyone and has her certificate proudly displayed at her house. Hope you have a good year.
Tex, We had the best time with you and Hunter as our guides. Its an experience we will never forget! We learned so much and had so much fun. Kevin and Marilyn from New Jersey.
Thanks for taking us along, Tex. I’ve missed your videos! This one was another fantastic, professional-quality job-you surely have a talent for documenting your adventures. Keep up the good work and Happy Trails!

Remarkable what you Mule Wrangler's do!! I've always wanted to see some of the back stage operation. Amazing! Thanks for being part of the great heritage of the Grand Canyon.
I did this mule trip when I was a teenager in 1967. Doesn't look like its changed much. My mule collapsed, but I was unharmed. As an adult, I hiked down to the ranch. Either way, a great experience! Andy
What an amazing place! You look so happy and I loved listening to the “clip- clop” sound of the mules on the bridge, seeing them bob for apples, and loved the classic country music! You have a special connection with the mules and they are blessed to have you there in the Grand Canyon! This is now on my bucket list!
When I lived in Williams in N AZ I was honored to meet and become friends with a retired mule skinner from the Canyon. His name was Marion Perkins. He's gone now. They retired him with his white mule, whose name I have forgotten. I took a mule rideo on the North Rim in the mid-80's....not nearly as long or scary as the one to Phantom Ranch. Mules are the best!!!
Lisa, I love this video. I know you talked about this ride in your AT hike videos and now we know what it's all about. Thank you so much for making this video. The scenery is beautiful and you make this ride look so fun ! I hope one day to do this trip. It's really nice to see you again and I hope you keep doing videos. You are the best !

Thank you for sharing this wonderful trip with us. At the age of 12, I used to lead trail rides through the woods in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan by horseback. I envy your calm and joyful spirit on all those switch backs. You’re braver than I 😳
Cool video! We visited that part of the Grand Canyon, but didn’t do the mule rides. The scenery is so beautiful down there but I’m not sure about riding a mule.
So glad you got some film posted ! You are so adventurous and portray so naturally what you do it is just fun to watch. Thanks for sharing, it made my day! "Sparks"
Great video! I love a good mule and this looks like whole bunch of good mules. Please post more about their care. I really appreciate how you acknowledge them.
You have a very natural talent as.a presenter and videographer. Thank you for taking us on this little adventure. If you’ve ever a mind to listen to a TH-cam audiobook, I recommend you give “Six Years with the Texas Rangers, 1875 to 1881, by James Gillett” a try. You’ll be hooked in just a minute or two. If I ever do and run into you I will have to get your autograph lol you go girl you are my hero you are great to watch on the Appalachian Trail and you're still a great person to watch!
I noticed the mules have sores or rubbed off fur where the saddle goes on. Are they being overworked? I was excited to do this trip and now I am not sure :/
No, the mules are not overworked and those are not sores. The breeching is a necessary piece of equipment to keep the saddle in place when riding downhill. It will rub off some hair but it does not hurt the mule. We put the breeching up when going uphill to keep the mule comfortable. We love these mules dearly. They’re our coworkers.
Hi Tex! This is a long shot for sure, but we will be visiting the Grand Canyon this (2023) Feb and I wondered if it would be possible to meet you and say hi. Nice to get a virtual tour on the mules. Was just recently at the GC. My Fiancé and I tried to book a trip to the ranch but it’s all booked, over a year in advance so we did the next best thing. We hiked all the way from the south rim to pipe creek beach and back, in a day hike. Not quite as fun. I believe we may have ran into your convoy along the way.
Wow, good job on that day hike! It’s no joke! Yeah, the mule trains are now taking the Bright Angel trail both down and up while the South Kaibab is getting some maintenance, so I’m sure you saw us!
You're back! Thanks for the ride, but don't think I could do that unless they install some guardrails on the trail. There's lots of seriously hairy drops on that trail. I guess miles don't realize that? Hope you have a great winter!
I've been to Phantom Ranch. It's awesome. But my bestie and I actually hiked the Rim to Rim, South Rim to North Rim. And we stayed and camped two nights at Phantom Ranch. Absolutely loved it! I tell everyone I meet to do a Rim to Rim or ride the trail to Phantom on the mules. It's an experience few people do.
Great to see another one of your videos. You have an amazing job and your love for it shines through. Look forward to seeing more of your adventures.....Merry Christmas!
Pretty amazing job you have, from backpack to saddlebags.Thank you for bringing us along. There is snow in the Whites, We're expecting a dusting overnight in the mid 30s here.🌲👍
Over 25 years ago I took that wonderful ride down Bright Angle and spent the night at Phantom Ranch. I think its time to do it again. This time my wife and I will bring others. Please leave me a link where we can make reservations. Also, what is the weight limit for the Mules? Great VIDEO!
I backpack a couple of times a year off the main corridor and always enjoy seeing the mules. I don't like that one corner on BA above the river, scary 😏 Best lemonade at the canteen! Watching the deer in the creek beats any TV.
WOW! What an amazing trip that must be for those who are not afraid of heights. I had no idea what the Grand Canyon really looks like with all those switch backs and the steepness. No wonder your videos made hiking the AT look like a walk in the park!! Thank you so much and Merry Christmas and holidays to you.
You really need to hike or ride into the Grand Canyon to fully appreciate the scale of it. Though it is spectacular from the rim viewpoints, much of it is so far away that your eyes don't really grasp the size of it. I've never taken the mule ride, but I have hiked the trails shown in this video, as well as a couple of backcountry trails on the north side.
@@lisaphikes It seems like a grueling job for them to have to do. I know you care a lot about animals so I am assuming they are cared for. I'm just a crazy animal activist.
@Katherine Thyne these mules are extremely well cared for and spoiled by us wranglers. They also really like working. They’re like working class dogs. They’re not happy just sitting around. They need a job to do. As we’re picking out mules for the next day’s ride, we often have to tell mules that no, they’re not working the next day (they try to get into that pen). We have to MAKE them take a day off. They’re so cute. 😊
@@lisaphikes Thanks for explaining. Good to hear. Thanks again for letting us follow your adventures. I'm a therapist and have been stuck doing zoom sessions for the past two years. I love my career, but don't get out much.
Gorgeous photography. I found Lisa on the AT Trail youtube production. I have hiked the trans canyon hike acrosd the Grand Canyon (north to south, and south back to north) a total of 14 times. Get the cabin reservations on the rims, Lisa, for your RIM TO RIM adventure. Sure beats that green canopy of the AT Trail !
About 1998 or so I took a half day mule ride on a darling named Trinity. I've wondered if she's still alive but that was a long time ago, even by Mule life expectancy she is probably well retired or deceased.
My wife and I were fortunate to have had Tex as one of our wranglers on our two-day trip to Phantom Ranch. Tex is a very friendly and helpful guide.
How’d you get that job? No wonder your happy! How long does it take to get to the bottom of the canyon on the mules?
You just need the correct skills and apply! It normally takes 5 hours down.
@@lisaphikes ❤️thanks!
Awesome video share friends great channel release the mules 😍
See you again stay safe and healthy always CHEERS 👍👍
Excellent video!
They’re both beautiful in their own way. 😁
Great video! Looks like you really enjoy your job and you can’t beat the views of the canyon. I did that hike in one day - uphill was no joke!
Wow! Such a cool job...and the views
Very nice you are in your Element. ✌️👊
About 1998 or so I took a half day mule ride on a darling named Trinity. I've wondered if she's still alive but that was a long time ago, even by Mule life expectancy she is probably well retired or deceased.
