Tenacious D is easily one of the best live performances you can see. The entire show is pure distilled Jables and KG goofy energy, unbridled fun and raw, uncut Rock.
There's a video from a while back of JB singing the US national anthem. He completely smashes it and in the process seems to stun a football stadium full of fans. Really something else. Gotta love the D!
I sincerely believe that Tenacious D changed the world with their tiny introduction of madness, skill, and ridiculousness. I sure af know my life is better for the COUNTLESS hours I have kept their music on repeat. It is actually impossible for me to hear the first 3 notes of a Tenacious D song and avoid smiling.
bit of trivia for you : the cop who arrests them in the video is played by J.R. Reed who played Lee (the Tenacious D superfan) in the Tenacious D HBO series and also was the lead singer in Kyle Gass' other band, Trainwreck.
Those bends at the start of the song are most likely a lap steel guitar, or maybe a pedal steel, with a generous dollop of reverb/delay. Such a haunting tone!

I’ve loved Tenacious D for almost 30 years now, and I love watching other people get into their music. I also love how smoothly you transition from Finnish to English, and then back to Finnish, sometimes within the same sentence. I love how Scandinavians & Finns are able to smoothly transition between languages like that.
My daughter made an observation a few months ago and I cannot get it out of my head now. She compared Jack Black’s over the top stage presence, theatrics and even some particular vocals to Bruce Dickinson. I admit, I hear it when I listen to particular songs. Too funny. Two polar opposites but I bet Jack secretly channels his inner Bruce Dickinson when he steps on stage. Sort of a Bruce/Jethro Tull vibe. Love Bruce and Jack both!
I wish your voice could always be in my ear. I’m sure you hear it constantly but your voice is so soft and delicate but also deliberate and enthusiastic. I’m glad you have a channel where we can come to hear your voice and thoughts on music. 🙂
They had a show on HBO in the 90s before he made movies. It was really funny, and this song was on the show. They really amped it up for this recording, but it kept the same energy.

To hear more of ROCK in Jack's singing - how about the beautiful story of rock music in a song called "The Metal"? Or self-explanatory "Death star"? "Master exploder" is quite mind-blowing, and their cover of "Last in Line" is amazing. Also "Rock your socks" is a fun song.
What an entertaining reaction to this silly and powerful song! If you haven't read the lyrics yet, I recommend it. As a musician yourself, I think you'll definitely relate to the central twist. Kyle and Jack are the Everymen of storytelling music. Loved your analysis, Anna!
