Favorite quote of the entire reaction. Literally one of the best I've seen thus far. Also: big fan/follower of yours as well, your reaction was wonderful🫡
I was born in Finland some 63 years ago (august) and I got very hooked up to Rens performance as I immediately resonated with it to some of Finlands signature traits, like our very deep connection to melancholy and introvert personality. I have lived through all stages of melancholy in my lifetime which can push anyone over to the dark side of life (suicides by some very close friends). My recently 'discovered' ME/CFS diagnosis is like rubbing salt in the wounds but, has also given me an explanation of why things are as they are... so for me it actually is a blessing of sorts. I have never ever thought that a perfoming act like Rens could involuntarely get me into tears every time I listened to it (surely more than 100 times by now). Some people out there claim that he is a reincarnation of a bard, that bad imho woul be none other than Shakespeare. Do as Ren... learn to relax and dance with your illness it helps.
The most heartbreaking part of this song for me is how Ren starts so confident in the conversation but slowly got broken down by his inner dialogue. The responses become increasingly more hurt by the comments made. It makes it all the more spectacular when he beats the voice into back into the void at the end.
Hi Jordan - Really great comment. I have watched Hi Ren a number of times now and I had exactly the same thoughts … but then at some point it struck me that there is also a third voice. At first I think we see Ren battling back and forth between himself and the negative/disruptive part of his subconscious, and this voice has been overpowering the other voice of Hope. Just like the pendulum analogy though, Hope starts to be heard, quietly at first, but then gathering strength and defiance, rising up as the pendulum swings into the light. That’s my interpretation now anyway.
@@Rob-bt3ev I very much agree. When he has his moment of “possession” the song reminds us of the bigger task at hand. My interpretation is he’s referring to the inner struggle that lives within all of us. And the two voices at the end were (as Ren states) known as many names. Good and evil, right and wrong, god vs Lucifer. This song is very profound and I think it’s going to affect a lot of people. If the couple reactions I’ve watched I’ve been surprised that this song is reaching such a broad range. I’ve seen reactions and comments from people in their 60s that have been responding within pure awe of the concept. Everyone sees it differently from what I’ve seen. Some respond saying it’s depression, some the devil, some their anxiety. My mans has expertly captured the human perspective in a 9 minute video. And people see it
Most uplifting for me was him standing up at the end. Did not think I would like the song but it really struck a chord with me. Really appreciate the honesty it.
I don't think he beat the malevolent voice back into the void at all. If his monologue shows anything it's that there is no "winning" against that side of us because it's eternal, it's always there, just as hope is eternal and always there. So, as he puts it so brilliantly, we need to relax, soften, and learn to dance with it.

Here is some information on Ren's story, in case you didn't already know. I gathered it from old newspaper interviews, articles, and Ren's livestreams and posts where he discussed his condition. Ren Eryn Gill is a British musician/independent artist; born in Wales on March 29, 1990, he grew up in Brighton. Ren pursued a career in music from an early age. In 2009, while studying music performance at Bath Spa University, he began to experience health issues and was struggling to attend his lectures. In 2010, he was signed by Sony Records and was working on an album when his health deteriorated to the point where he was unable to continue and subsequently dropped by Sony. Ren's illness often kept him in bed for up to 23 hours daily. Ren was initially misdiagnosed with depression, bipolar disorder, and chronic fatigue syndrome, which led him to experience psychosis. It would take seven years before a doctor in Belgium finally correctly diagnosed Ren with autoimmunity, Lyme disease, and resulting damage to the brain, organs, joints, and PTSD. Ren eventually underwent stem cell therapy in the United States, which improved his health, but it has not been a cure. Ren is currently in Canada for more treatments, including surgeries, and will have to be there for at least six months (Summer of 2023). Ren’s Canadian doctor discovered that Ren also developed a condition called Mast Cell Activation Disorder, which has affected the myelin sheath in his brain, his thyroid, adrenals, as well as his bones/joints. Ren stated: "It's a lot to wrap my head around having to be away from friends, family, and a successful career, and almost feels like a total juxtaposition to the fact that my music is blowing up right now and spreading to all corners of the world, but that's life, we take the good with the bad." Ren’s recent wisdom tooth removal went well, but he is currently battling an infection following cavitation surgery, and he is not feeling well. Let's keep supporting Ren as he undergoes his treatments. Check out and subscribe to his channel, listen to some of his earlier work, like and comment on his performances, and let's lift Ren's spirits. If you are a believer, pray for him. Ren is an artist with something to say to this generation, and his work is needed in these troubling times. This reaction video is remarkable in many ways, but one thing in particular stands out - the initial reaction. Whereby 90% of reactors to this video laugh and smile from the start way up to the 3 minute mark (and I have watched a TON of "Hi Ren" videos), Anna does not. She understood immediately the dark content within the initially light facade. I did, too, which is why it has always irritated me to see chuckles and mirth for what - to me, anyway - was a performance that was so obviously (or not so obviously, to some) going to be something deadly serious. Nice job, Anna! p.s. This was the 4th take - recorded live, of course - of "Hi, Ren", so, with reference to the mention of a bit of strain in the vocals, I guess he can be excused a little.
Oh my, you are so very very good at this. Thank you This song in particular reminded me how powerful music, well art in general, can be. I'd lost that feeling over the decades.
This is one of my favourite reactions to this piece i have seen so far, and i have seen at least 70+. The emotions in your eyes speak as much as the song in itself. Beautifully done! You earned a sub!
PS. i also love that you speak in your mother tongue for a majority of the song. It makes the things you say seem more authentic and right from your brain if that makes sense :D
I am looking forward to your reaction, as all of them are very enjoyable. “Hi Ren" is the song that put Ren on everyone's radar since December; it went viral and has garnered more than 6 million views since its debut, but he has been creating great music for more than ten years. Ren’s music videos are generally recorded live, often in a single take, although not necessarily the first take, and from various camera angles. His release, "Sick Boi," is almost another chapter to "Hi Ren." Many of Ren’s songs resonate with people because he addresses struggles that many others face every day. Ren plays multiple instruments (acoustic, electric, and bass guitar, piano, drums), has impressive vocals, is an excellent storyteller, and is quite the philosopher and poet. He is considered by many a modern bard; he calls his music “bardcore.” Ren’s earliest recordings on TH-cam are from his time in a band called “Trick The Fox,” consisting of Ren and his buddies Charlie and Tommy. Unfortunately, the band performed only briefly due to Ren’s onset of health issues. They are very talented. A fun clip to watch is “The Mash Up.” Ren’s trilogy "The Tale of Jenny/Screech/Violet" has been likened to a Shakespearean tragedy and is a prime example of his genius; it is a master’s class in storytelling and also showcases his guitar skills. The three acts are haunting, and the conclusion will catch you off guard. The trilogy needs to be watched in the order given, as this is the flow of the storyline and is best watched as a whole rather than piecemeal. Ren’s collaborations with Chinchilla (“Chalk Outlines,” “How to Be Me,” “Sexual Healing,” “One Dance/Drunk in Love”) are beautiful and showcase his singing voice. His live music videos are especially impressive. Ren's personal reflections are threaded through many of his songs; "Insomnia," "Depression," “Diazepam," “Penitence,” “Dear God,” “Heretic,” “Dominos,” his "Freckled Angels" album, just to name a few, all deserve a listen. His song "Money Game" (Part I & II) is another recommendation, although it is less of a personal song than it is an indictment of greed and the resulting injustices in this world. Ren’s Hip Hop/Rap style songs are all worth checking out if you enjoy this genre; they are pretty amazing. Check out “The Hunger,” “Genesis,” “What You Want,” “Losing it (FISHER rap retake),” “Right here, right now (Fatboy Slim one shot retake),” "Life is Funny," “Love Music (Parts 1, 2, and 3),” “Crucify Your Culture,” “Power,” and his latest release, “Bittersweet symphony (The Verve retake).” As I recently discovered, Ren also recorded a cover of “Can't Help Falling In Love (Elvis Cover),” that is simply beautiful. Then there are his performances with Sam Tompkins (“Blind Eyed,” “Earned it /Mans World / Falling,” “Walking on the moon/No Diggity”), Eden Nash (“Humble,” “Ocean”), Bibi (“Crutch,” “Ahiahiaoha”), Molly McKinna (“Penitence”), his former bandmate, Romain Axisa (“French Song”), which are all great. "The Big Push" busking sessions, concerts, and live recordings all are awesome and well worth checking out. Their covers of "I Shot the Sheriff/Road to Zion/Hip Hop," "Wade in the Water/Nina Simone/Trouble so Hard," "An Englishman in New York," “Bongo Bong,” “War Pigs,” the songs "Oh My Woman," “Swan Song,” “Sweet Little Lady," "It's Alright," "Watch Out," “Dignity,” and so many others are equally impressive. In anticipation of his stay in Canada for more treatments, Ren prepared some music ahead of time to be released over the next six months that he expects to be gone. He released “Sick Boi” and “Bittersweet Symphony (The Verve retake),” which is another masterful work.
I have watched many reactions to this brilliant piece of work, Anna. Yours was so heartfelt and endearing Thank you for that. Your ability to remain vulnerable and still so very observant of what Ren was showing us was truly amazing.

Watching Ren is like watching Michelangelo paint. Every time you watch it there is more to understand. Did you notice there is a hole behind the sound hole in his guitar? You can see his gown.
I've seen more than my fair share of reactions to this song, but this is the most intelligent analysis I've seen yet. Lyrically, vocally, emotionally, technically and musically. Thank you for helping me to understand why it's so precious. All of Ren and The Big Push's work is phenomenal and so diverse, it covers all genres, subjects and emotions and Sam's Cinematography on a tight budget is inspirational. I can't wait to see you see more. ❤️
When looking into this amazing reaction video, 2 min are sufficient to know that Anna has a wonderful soul. She senses Ren's feelings right from the beginning, understands the battle immediately when "good" Ren speaks for the first time. She lets Ren's pain unfold in her imagination, does not shy away, and can still analyse the musical means. Very interesting and insightful, thank you so much!
Another great reaction from the prettiest girl on the Tube. Love this song from Ren, check out his other songs Genesis and Chalk Outline.....these are great too.
A song of vulnerability, but also strength of human spirit. A young man who has kept his 'sisu' through situations that would have defeated others. Seemed like you could feel this story coming through the music & lyrics Anna, as always! The simple setting & video style, a good vehicle that conveyed so much more of the complex battles this man has faced. I wish him every success! Thanks Anna for breaking this all down for us! Love & Light! 🙏🙏
Good lord, Anna. You are so good. I mean, as the audience we see it, we hear it, we experience these changes and dynamics, but your analysis opens whole new vistas of insight and understanding of what is happening musically, vocally and thematically. You are a fantastic teacher!
Simply top notch review also not stopping song constantly. In the moment I saw your eyes shining out of emotion I just felt like jumping to the other side of the screen and hug you. Ren really touches people's emotions cause you feel its coming from a complete authentic place...no image to look good!
Part of the beauty of this performance is that it is IMPOSSIBLE to know what to expect. It's a mind-boggling punch right to the heart 🤯💔...followed up by a powerful message of hope. ❤️🔥
I just discovered your channel through this video, and then I also watched your reaction to "Hurt" by Johnny Cash, and I have to say, while I love reaction videos, I am rarely taken aback the way I was watching these two reactions. I spent 27yrs riding around in a big red truck and/or a smaller white truck, both with blinky lights, putting out fires or taking the sick and injured to the hospital, so I have no where near the musical knowledge you do, but I did briefly play in a college band, also used to give guitar lessons, and worked part time at a sound engineering studio, so I know just enough to know that you know music and all that it encompasses inside out like nobody's business. Not only that, you have such an impeccable way of describing such intricate parts of a song, that the most novice of music enthusiasts can easily understand. It has been my experience with people who excel to such a high level in their field of work, or just their passion in life, often can fall short humanizing their craft, or making their explanation or feelings about something relating to their craft, accessible to the average non expert, by using too much "industry lingo" or by an aloofness that ends up going over the listeners head. Your explanation of emotions, feeling, and life experiences as they relate to the individual song made feel like a team of writers worked on a perfect script for weeks on end, to get a perfect synopsis prepared to describe that song or an event. Sorry, I'm not trying to gush, but I was that impressed, and in today's world, with so much negativity and tongue lashing that goes around the internet, especially towards those that create content for people to view, I always feel like it's my responsibility to try and restore some balance and let those who I feel really deserve praise, or maybe just need something to remind them they have purpose and are enriching peoples lives that they don't know, to take 5min and be that vessel, be it a small gesture or not, I think every little bit helps. I just subbed and look forward to watching more reactions of yours. (psssst, especially Ren, when you see his range, genre wise, and how well he raps, sings the blues, sings pop songs, or even reggae, your mind will be blown, this kid is amazing) Cheers!! Olkoon sinulle upea päivä

Hi Anna. I have seen this performance at least 50 times by now and i'v hade my emotions up side down many times. And now when i saw your eyes get whet and a tear came Rolling down your face..my emotions got me again. This is crazy good and powerful stuff. Loved your reaction as always . Kiitos Anna..and Ren.
Out of all the reactions about this song I've watched, you were the only one to mention the unresolved finish (no pun intended :) I noticed it as well, but the way I interpret it is that the yodeling part (not even sure if that is officially yodeling) is the "eternal dance" he spoke about in the monologue. He is literally dancing in the end, the lights are flickering dark to light, and the yodeling is intense and kind of uncomfortably melodic. It reminds me in a way of music you would hear in a strange and disturbing nightmare version of a renaissance ball with creepy violins playing. Anyway, he ends with that unresolved structure that symbolizes that the dance goes on. Also, the yodeling at the beginning seems to reference that the dance was actually going on before his conversation with himself, but - and I think this is really clever of him if he did do this - he put this falsetto tune out there that made all of us listeners think "what the heck is going on? I didn't expect that!" which could represent him taking us through his confusion when his condition first started happening. In any case, this is a masterpiece of a song. Kudos on a great reaction and analysis! I enjoyed it!

😭❤️ Thank you so much for your comment! It means so much to me when ppl notice things like this.
Ren can totally be excused. 100%. xx
Very insightful analysis, heartfelt and professional at the same time!
Great reaction Anna! Your facial expressions told how much the song affected you.
Oh my, you are so very very good at this. Thank you
This song in particular reminded me how powerful music, well art in general, can be.
A fun clip to watch is “The Mash Up.”
Ren’s trilogy "The Tale of Jenny/Screech/Violet" has been likened to a Shakespearean tragedy and is a prime example of his genius; it is a master’s class in storytelling and also showcases his guitar skills.
Check out “The Hunger,” “Genesis,” “What You Want,” “Losing it (FISHER rap retake),” “Right here, right now (Fatboy Slim one shot retake),” "Life is Funny," “Love Music (Parts 1, 2, and 3),” “Crucify Your Culture,” “Power,” and his latest release, “Bittersweet symphony (The Verve retake).”
As I recently discovered, Ren also recorded a cover of “Can't Help Falling In Love (Elvis Cover),” that is simply beautiful.
Wow, you are Ren's wikipedia.
Thanks for info.
Man, this is such a good recapture of like his whole cataloge.
@@Tobsson Thank you.
🥺🙏💖
Best analysis of Ren's use of vocal qualities I've heard yet!!
The language of Music is Universally Galaxywide! Oh, your English is GREAT! Thanks!
Unique breakdown, thanks. Subbed.
Excellent Analysis. It's art. Important art.

Please do some more of this amazing artist.
Beautiful Anna and a beautiful reaction
I have watched many reactions to this brilliant piece of work, Anna. Yours was so heartfelt and endearing Thank you for that. Your ability to remain vulnerable and still so very observant of what Ren was showing us was truly amazing.

Thank you so much! Welcome to my music family, your support is MUCH appreciated! c:
Many thanks my friend for a fantastic reaction and break down love and respect from the UK 👍👍👍👍👍👍🌟😀😀 amazing channel 👍
A genius depiction of the inner struggle many people face on an everyday basis!
"...and when i'm gone maybe i will remembered for doing something special with myself" ... your eyes are priceless
I appreciate your reaction. You are a sensitive human. Bless you
Watching Ren is like watching Michelangelo paint. Every time you watch it there is more to understand. Did you notice there is a hole behind the sound hole in his guitar? You can see his gown.
I didn't!
There is no hole in the back of the guitar. What you see is not the gown but the sticker the guitar manufacturer put in the instrument.
@@neurocide thx, my mistake.
❤️
❤️
I was going to write an original comment about the quality of Anna's analysis, but you've covered it. I couldn't agree more!
Creative genius x reactive genius = extreme anticipation :)
Great reaction. The tale of Jenny and Screech (full version) next please
This was brilliant! Never heard of this before, but it gave me goosebumps the entire time. Wow is an understatement
Fantastic reaction & breakdown of the song...thank you.
Please don’t stop now - will be here to watch your reactions to Ren’s amazing catalog of works!
Don't worry, there will surely be more Ren reactions from me! xx
🥰Thank YOU! xx
For me, Ren is a new emotional category of Music, Acting & Singing combined in a new captivating Category. Your Reaction is Top Ten, ❤.
So glad you spoke in English , being a typical Brit my Finnish is a bit rusty, Great reaction.
😂❤️
Awesome reaction, deep and beautiful!! This is a masterpiece!
I’m so glad you found Ren. Keep journeying down the rabbit hole……there’s more
Great touching Reaction well done more Ren!
Loved your reaction Anna. This is a gem with so many angles.
You are a beautiful person!
This is the best “hi ren” reaction video I have seen.
And I don’t speak, Finnish!
really powerful and thoughtful reaction, thank you
"Ready" to cry again with this message that is so needed to be heard and spread...looking forward to this Anna:)
Awesome reaction. Looking forward to watching more of your reactions
You are a real gem, thanks ❤
Another great reaction from the prettiest girl on the Tube. Love this song from Ren, check out his other songs Genesis and Chalk Outline.....these are great too.
I always learn from you. You don't miss anything...Damn, you are good!
Well said EZ E! ❤️ Thank YOU for your continuous support, really means a lot to me! xx
@@annavaskelainen 😊😊
That was an excellent reaction thank you.
Good lord, Anna. You are so good. I mean, as the audience we see it, we hear it, we experience these changes and dynamics, but your analysis opens whole new vistas of insight and understanding of what is happening musically, vocally and thematically. You are a fantastic teacher!
The tear rolling your down your face was so beautiful you felt the the song ,
❤️🩹
💗💗💗Still my girl :) 💗💗💗 Peace and love from Bavaria!
Simply top notch review also not stopping song constantly.
In the moment I saw your eyes shining out of emotion I just felt like jumping to the other side of the screen and hug you.
Ren really touches people's emotions cause you feel its coming from a complete authentic place...no image to look good!
❤️
Wow, thank you so much for your comment! ❤️ These kind of messages mean a lot to me. I think it is important to explain things so that everyone can understand what I am talking about! 😊
Thanks again and I really hope you'll be enjoying my content in the future too, maybe even pop in my premiere live chat some day and say hi? Have a great rest of your week! xx
❤️❤️
Many thanks for sharing your experience. It will surely help many. The best art always comes from reality
"I've spent half of my life ill" ......... olin 20 kun tää alkoi.. oon 39 nyt. Huoh....
mutta onneksi olen myös oppinut elään sen kanssa. Tuun selviään, koska oon selvinnyt tähänkin asti... mutta harmi jos sen joutuu tekeen näin yksin.
What can I say? Seen a few hundred reactions to this tune. Yours is the first I've watched half done in Finnish, and also one of the most beautifully insightful.
Good work lass xx
I'm subscribed to you now, can't wait to discover what else you have to say on things. And to follow the sublime cadence of your mother tongue 😛
Thank you very much! It warms my wee heart to know you like my content so much! ❤️
A very insightful analysist and a beautiful reaction thank you
I've watched many of the reaction video to hi ren and I've enjoyed yours the most. Thank you.
Thank you. ❤️
muchas gracias! Great reaction
I really enjoyed your intellectual breakdown of HI Ren! Most people don't truly understand the underlined musical art out of the gate. A piece of art 🎨
I’m glad I found this / you as it is so fascinating to hear a true vocal expert listen to pure musical genius like Ren!! … and a reaction with respect to his message of mental health, and connecting to us all is so right on …so many people around the world are being held by him, sharing himself & his vulnerabilities!! (I had to read somewhere that his mother, who raised him, was a vocal teacher.?)
Just Sub’d!
PLEASE CHECK OUT HIS SINGING IN
