      Yes 4/4 all the way through. It's Danny's accents that's gives you the syncopated feeling. You want to experience Tool syncopation in full bloom, react to Lateralus... You'll love it! The lyric sequence follows the mathematical Fibonacci equation for randomness. It's really badass!!!

    "The drummer makes art."
    Danny Carey is a legitimate musical genius. His understanding, mastery, and implementation of polyrythyms (and other absurdly advanced drum techniques) is on par or beyond what the best drummers have ever done.
    Their music appreciates over time like wine.

    A reactor pointing out the King Crimson connection? That is a pleasant surprise. King Crimson has been said to be one of the bands biggest influences by the band themselves.
    They have teamed up with David Bottrill, who produced records for both Robert Fripp and King Crimson.
    Danny Carey has said many times that Bill Bruford, who was the drummer for King Crimson at times, is a big inspiration for him.
    So yeah, King Crimson vibes in Tool songs is definitely a thing.

    For more drum magic, watch the drum cam version of Pneuma!
    About the Korn Daddy recommendation below, that song can be literally dangerous to hear without being prepared that it's an incredibly disturbing song about child abuse. Don't get me wrong, it's great, but it can be truly traumatic if you don't know what you're getting into

    Greetings from Italy. I'm mostly silent, but since you mention King Crimson... the intricacies of the various layers of Tool music are really similar to the ones of the music that Fripp was composing in the '90s and '00s (including the Projekcts, listen to Frakctured...), with the "wall of sound" that he said was inspired by some metal band of those times like Pantera. The current layout with three drummers is also giving that percussive "overload" that is one of Danny Carey signature features. Love your reactions!

    It's hard to focus just on the vocals when listening to a band like Tool. Each musician brings so much to the table that you can't ignore the individual contributions. Maynard actually remains somewhat hidden during live shows (unlike the live version of Sober that you reacted to), so that IMO the other musicians get the credit due, rather than everyone focusing on the front man.Thanks so much for this reaction Anna.Your analytical skills are top notch, and just watching you grooving to the beat with a smile on your face had me smiling. And yes, you nailed the meaning. Lateralus is another fun Tool song you should check out; they incorporate the Fibonacci sequence into it. Very cool. 💛🤘🤙✌️

    Mostly 4/4. Other influences are Black Sabbath and Joni Mitchell, for a spectrum. There's some great verbal gymnastics in Ænima. It's so good how they all go off in different melodies but they all contribute to the whole. Like Laeteralus. Glad you're listening!

    Anna have you done Lateralus it's probably their most time intricate song ever . And being musical brilliant they make such a huge difference to the thought that music isn't mathematical in nature . Time sequences have been around since the invention of the drum .
    Tool are such brilliant musicians that their gifts to us the listener is incredible . Danny Cary's playing is a sight to behold . Someone who can do that many poly rhythms at once is beyond words .

    I have watched tons of reactions to The Pot and you still managed to say some things I hadn't heard before. Great job. I love the way your eye lit up when he hit his first scream. My suggestion for next for an amazingly complex yet really approachable song would be Lateralus. Look up the Fibonacci sequence before you listen because it makes it even more impressive. 8:28 - Part of why this song is as popular as it is is because of what you just brought up, that most people can map it to a 4/4 without watering down what Tool has as far as their distinct sound. When you get into stuff like Schism, Descending, or especially stuff as weird as Jambi, you'll see their King Crimson, and probably Rush, influences as far as just grabbing really odd (albeit beautiful in their hands) time signatures.

    I would recommend "Pushit" off their "Salival" live album. One of their rare official live recordings, it does a great job of showing off the dynamics of every member of the band as well as their unique approach to songwriting, besides giving you a window into the weird intimacy of a Tool show. I've seen a LOT of bands live, and been to many, many shows, but Tool and Portishead were the most unique experiences of them all.

    Anna, Maynard is one of the most interesting vocalists of our time. He sounds very different depending on what each song needs. He also sings in two other bands, A Perfect Circle, and Puscifer. His vocals are markedly different in each of these bands. I urge you to explore the catalog of all 3 bands (but Tool will always be my favorite). Can’t wait to see your analysis of “The Pot”!

    • @Bobloblaw-walbolboB
      @Bobloblaw-walbolboB 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      No disrespect at all, but Tool is not a band for vocal-reactors. It just has a lot of lure, generated by fans, which is fine and understandable.

    • @davidhart6291
      @davidhart6291 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      @@Bobloblaw-walbolboB please forgive the following lengthy reply: Your comment is in no way disrespectful, so no worries there, I respect your right to that opinion. I would gently argue, however, that I and some others would disagree. Maynard is not a very “flashy” vocalist - he doesn’t belt crazy arpeggios, he doesn’t soar operatically, he doesn’t have the “shock value” of metal singers like Tatiana from Jinjer, etc. However, his vocal choices, unusual phrasing, style choices (such as how his vocals in Tool are usually put very far back in the mix, like a “4th instrument” rather than a “lead vocal”), his breath control (the 26-second scream in The Grudge) are all quite fascinating to analyze, and I bet Anna will have plenty to talk about, even considering that “The Pot” is a somewhat more “mainstream” song than other Tool songs.
      Maynard’s complexity as a vocalist sorta mirrors Adam Jones’ guitar playing in Tool. He’s no Eddie Van Halen or Nuno, or Satriani, he doesn’t really “shred”, no Dragonforce type solos, but he generates so much sublime texture, tone, riffs, and just musically tasty technical prowess that he is one of the best guitarists in the world, just not “flashy”.
      I saw a quote that said (paraphrasing), “For most metal/rock bands, their music shows off their talent. For Tool, their talent shows off the music”. I feel that’s true.
      The Charismatic Voice channel has done a lot of great Tool/Maynard analyses, if you want to check that out.
      In the end, I’m not trying to force you to change your opinion, and I very much appreciate your point of view, but I, for one, will greatly enjoy any Tool, A Perfect Circle, or Puscifer reactions Anna sees fit to gift us with.

      @@davidhart6291 oh, no problem at all - i quite like Tool and Perfect Circle. Understandably, reaction chanels like that of Elizabeth, and Anna, will always find something to analyze, and by no means do I think Maynard is a bad singer. But much like many other true musicians, I think his strenghts lie in other phases of his music. It is complimentary to the songs, and it works well, for sure, and he does have technical abilities. I mean, I like bands like Megadeth or RHCP, but I don't think Mustaine or Kiedis are great vocalists, and I do think, for one, Maynard is probably quite better than them two, even though both also work for their bands, so it is not always purely about the voice. To me, many of the 90's grunge bands are vocal-bands, bar something like Smashing Pumpkins, where, again, people will compliment Corgan, because it is different. But yeah, of course - to each it's own. And Tool always boosts reaction chanels, and I think Anna deserves more subscribers - so I have no problem there!

    The whole band are fans of King Crimson. Danny Carey, Tool's drummer lists Bill Brufford as one of his main influences when it comes to drumming. He said once in an interview that listening to Bill's approach on King Crmson's "Red" album was one of his turning points. Nice catch.

    I was a bit surprised to see that people suggested this as a rhythmically intricate song because it IS mostly in 4/4 as you noticed. If I'm correct I think it is Schism that is more interesting. I believe that's the one that has 48 meter changes.
    Furthermore: Don't speak too much English (your English is perfect, that's not the problem) but we come to your channel to hear you speak the beautiful Finnish language. 😀

      It's a funny one for sure, mostly "just" 4/4 but so cleverly accented that it's easy to get fooled into thinking it's not. Lateralus would be my pick for those wonderful fibonacci shenanigans
