As a CNA I had a resident that graduated highschool in 1970 and she used to sing this to me as I got her ready for her night routine to get to bed. She brought the 1970's to life for me, it'll be 3 years come March 2022 since I lost my favorite resident and friend. R.I.P Marguerite AND Mama Cass for bringing music and life back into my life 🌈💐
Thank you, thank you so much for taking care of residents as a CNA. I know how hard you must work because you provide direct care to people. She was blessed to have you take care of her. You are an angel in human costume.
NO lip syncing here. No auto tune. Pure talent from an angel who left the earth WAY to fast. Love her to this day! What a spirit! Many covers have been done to this song but i cant help think it will always be hers and hers alone!
@@4f52 yeah that was pretty common during this time period. But her voice is still pretty much 99% identical to the actual recording, they just used it to keep in tune. Someone who’s voice is auto tuned cannot do this.
She put herself on a very strict diet which was not good for her health. That’s why she passed so young. It’s because people were judging her for how she looks she wanted to lose weight as fast as possible.
Cass Elliott had the most beautiful voice. Her songs and what she sang gave inspiration to millions of people…women and men!!! Her music is so poignant in today’s world!!!
As a Teenager, it’s crazy to listen to these old classics that your parents listened to and see just how much better they are compared to modern day music. People had genuine passion and talent for singing, now we have auto tune and consumer music. I wish I grew up witnessing this.
My son is 15 and I've spent years exposing him to amazing music of the past across all genres. I admire youngsters that seek out the great music of days gone by.
I was driving on I-95 going to Baltimore & this song came on the radio & I found myself singing along . I was 19 & was not even born yet . I went in & told my mom that I just heard the best song & told her . Mom said OMG Michael she was truly the best top shelf ! Then she went into her bedroom & came out with an old record player & this song . I played it all night long & mom had the biggest smile RIP Mom & Mama Cass . I hope she sang it as you walked through those pearly gates xoxoxo
Michael, try the soundtrack to the 1970 western Monty Walsh. Or better still, the CD release expanded version. The title track The Good Times Are Coming that opens the film is on there in three versions. I prefer the slow one, but either way, she's on top form.
Cass was more of a loud, belting, caberet style voice whereas Karen's voice was pure, liquid chocolate. Only an equally divine voice would pair well with Karen's voice (maybe Elvis?)
@treasuretrovel3816 I think mama Cass and Karen would blend in together nicely. When one has a low comfortable note and one has a higher, blending is usually fantastic
@@cdick She wrote all these songs Mamma Cass had raw talent She was amazing She could harmonize to any song Something that today's music doesn't have...

Mama Cass was so beautiful. I relate to her so much, she had issues with self image and despite all her talent and beauty.. she and those around her couldn’t see that. RIP Cass ❤️🙏
I love mama Cass, from when I was eight or nine.my sister had this record and she would play it all the time we would sing it our little hearts out lol she has a beautiful voice and a beautiful lady rest in peace she made us feel alot better about ourselves 🙏🙏😁♥️ great memories
I love her sparkly dress here. I’ve always loved her voice. She reminds me of my best friend’s mom, both ladies were so full of life and taken from us too soon. Susan and Cass I hope you’re dancing somewhere together I’ll see you someday.
Who else replays this song over and over again? I usually play this song at least 5 times back to back. Love this song and Mama Cass. A voice from the heavens.
I do I love the song and I love Mama Cass' voice she was an amazing singer at a time when lyrics were written to inspire people to be themselves and not to follow "the crowd". Yet another great singer ho was taken too soon. You are missed Mama Cass.
I was a kid when Mama Cass was alive and I loved her. She was a great performer, pretty, talented with a real flair for comedy. Her appearances on Sonny & Cher were great.
This song means so much to me. Especially that line: "'Cause it hangs them up to see someone like you." I'm sure Mama Cass, like myself, felt the pain that comes with being a larger woman. Back then, it must have been even lonelier, because there weren't nearly as many women her size back then, especially on the popular music scene. But she went and made her own kind of music, just like in the song. I love her.
If it helps, Mama Cass was always far and away the more popular of the two ladies in the Mama & the Papas. As lovely as Michelle Phillips was, she lacked the personality and charm that Cass had that made her a fixture on shows like Sonny & Cher. She also had a flair for comedy. I LOVED Mama Cass as a kid. I never cared about her size.
Yes down in the bunker! Seeing that got me back to this song otherwise it had disappeared in my memory. After that episode I had to get a copy of this fantastic song!
Seeing Desmond wake up and get ready for his day while he played this song, unmatched! One of the best TV series ever to exist and some of the best music choices as well, this song will forever live with me!
Mama Cass was part of my childhood. It's cool how new commercials are playing her songs. The marketing guys know how to perk up baby boomers. I heard "u gotta go where u want to go" & "Make Your Own Kind of Music" & I immediately came here to see who sang it. 1966 & 1969 - Mama Cass, I Was 7. Their music lives on and brings you back to a kid. So uplifting. I had to share my feelings. Anyone else here b/c they heard our childhood songs?
im glad to see her getting the audience she deserves no nowadays. i heard when she was making her songs she was made fun due to her weight which is very sad. i first heard her song from lost and it was banger.
John Philip's was always goading her, I wonder was he a little bit jealous of her, made sing until she fainted, he abused her mentally...awful, it's up to us her fans now to stand up for her and no more body shaming, we're not all 'Michelles'
@@BD-qk5li Well, they didn't have them in 1969. So they used tricks like singing along to your own pre-recorded vocal to keep you on pitch. Nonetheless, that track just oozes its time and place. They used it over the end credits for "Mrs. America" last week.
Cass Elliott had one of those special voices. If you ever have this song blasting in your ear that last "You Gotta" just gives goosebumps every time. She just sings and lets the voice come out of her the way it is, no artifice, no extras, just her. She was Boy George's favorite singer.
She was so ahead of her time and I truly wish she was still around to grace us with her beautiful voice and songs! I know she would've been such a light during this dark and horrible year!
Joni's great too, especially in her early years like when she did the acoustic original version of "Both Sides Now" and the Blue album is also a gem. But, I feel like her voice didn't stay as consistent later in her career. Karen, however sounded amazing even during the last years of her illness. How she did it I'll never know...a true legend. And Mama sounded spot on up until the end as well. They are my number one gals.🤗
@@lilyhoss6000 Please don't think I'm trying to start a heated debate about this but Cass died in the early '70s. Even Karen died prematurely and fairly early on in her career. In other words, we never got hear them at later stages the way Joni has recorded. I have a feeling they would have maintained that rich sound because Joni smokes and her voice has become more gravelly. I was going to include Judy Collins. I had the honor to see her over 10 years ago. I think at that point she was pushing 70 and her instrument was impeccable. She maintained that range. I assume she is very disciplined with vocal exercises as well as having a lifestyle that supports preserving her voice.
I'm 70 just, and the heart felt notes I'm reading brings tears to my eyes. Miss Elliott had a very,, emotional life, yet she wrote songs of giving and spirit. She was one of a kind and listening to her music is an inspiration still to this day . Never forget 🕊️✌️❤️

☀️ Sunny Days ☀️ sad but I wonder why? Not a good advert of health to start with. But the old ones are the best. Showing my age here. Not being nasty here by the way. I didn’t realise she passed away at 32.
As a young lad growing up in a gloomy overcast Northern England in the 60s she epitomised everything I thought about being young and care free where the sun always shines. Sadly her health took her away far too early.
I can't imagine a bigger contrast than that between California and the north of England in the 1960s. Yet both were of great valuable cultural significance.
@@paulbackhard6315No, according to the autopsy there were no drugs in her system. She’d been unwell a couple of weeks earlier before her scheduled appearance on The Tonight Show starring Johnny Carson; she was taken to hospital and put it down to exhaustion. She then appeared in a series of solo concerts at The Palladium in London. There were some parties given in her honour by other celebrities, to celebrate her success, She left the last one of these at 8.00pm, saying she felt exhausted. She died in her sleep several hours later.

Cass Elliot was so talented. I felt so terribly sad when she died. She was another one of our generation's great singers who left us too soon and too young. I never bought the "died choking on a ham sandwich " nonsense that was spread around at the time. It cheapened her death. Thanks for the video. I think I watched it when it aired.

I love this song, Cass was great.
As a CNA I had a resident that graduated highschool in 1970 and she used to sing this to me as I got her ready for her night routine to get to bed. She brought the 1970's to life for me, it'll be 3 years come March 2022 since I lost my favorite resident and friend. R.I.P Marguerite AND Mama Cass for bringing music and life back into my life 🌈💐
Beautiful.........💕💕💕💕
Thank you, thank you so much for taking care of residents as a CNA. I know how hard you must work because you provide direct care to people. She was blessed to have you take care of her. You are an angel in human costume.

NO lip syncing here. No auto tune. Pure talent from an angel who left the earth WAY to fast. Love her to this day! What a spirit! Many covers have been done to this song but i cant help think it will always be hers and hers alone!
She's actually singing over a track of her singing
Yh she was but it was live still along with the full recording
@@4f52 yea, she wasn’t lipsyncing
@@4f52 yeah that was pretty common during this time period. But her voice is still pretty much 99% identical to the actual recording, they just used it to keep in tune. Someone who’s voice is auto tuned cannot do this.
Is her voice really that great? She's got some bangers but her voice is meh, especially for a big girl
Such a shame she passed away so young. She just looks like she’s having a blast in this clip and is full of confidence
I was thinking that too. Such an amazing voice
What you wrote occurred to me when I started listening. It screams love and peace and understanding to me.
I cannot stress how much this song helped me through my teenage years. Thank God we were blessed with Mama Cass

As a Teenager, it’s crazy to listen to these old classics that your parents listened to and see just how much better they are compared to modern day music. People had genuine passion and talent for singing, now we have auto tune and consumer music. I wish I grew up witnessing this.

Today's generation doesn't know what they are missing.
Your mom must have freaked when you were talking to her before you were born 😲
Awe I love this story. Music is truly a beautiful thing. May your mother and mama Cass rest easy👏❤️
Great story!!!!!
What a amazing lucky moment in time to catch this actually being played on the radio in 21st century!!!
I can only imagine hearing Cass and Karen Carpenter singing together. Pure heaven!
Oh man that would be one hell of a duet. Maybe add Linda Ronstadt??
Cass was more of a loud, belting, caberet style voice whereas Karen's voice was pure, liquid chocolate. Only an equally divine voice would pair well with Karen's voice (maybe Elvis?)

what a shame that so much attention is focused on her appearance when her voice is beyond flawless....
I was a kid when Mama Cass was alive and I loved her. She was a great performer, pretty, talented with a real flair for comedy. Her appearances on Sonny & Cher were great.

For me it's because she was taken far too soon and this song is something you'd probably have heard at her eulogy.
Free guy
Poignant!
Same. Very few songs get to me like this one. It's just so pure and joyful.
She was so beautiful, as I'm sure you are too.
I remember her show when I was little, she was also quite humorous!

That season premiere of Lost aired one generation (twenty years) ago.

Amen...Cass Elliot and Karen Carpenter are hands down two of the best female vocalists of all time.
@@lilyhoss6000 What about Joni Mitchell? LOL
Richard Ellens, I agree...if only Mama Cass would have shared that ham sandwich with Karen Carpenter they would both be alive today...

It would be nice if she were still living...she'd be resting on her laurels at this point, in her 70s
What a voice. A real shame what happened to her
Did she die because of drugs or because she was fat?
Not judging, just asking.
As a young lad growing up in a gloomy overcast Northern England in the 60s she epitomised everything I thought about being young and care free where the sun always shines. Sadly her health took her away far too early.
Point taken but this London kid used to love the family holidays spent with our Geordie granny in a pit village in the 1960s. 😀
It’s wasn’t her health it was drug use that killed her
I can't imagine a bigger contrast than that between California and the north of England in the 1960s.

Nobody can tell ya;
There's only one song worth singin',
They may try and sell ya,
'Cause it hangs them up to see someone like you.
But you've gotta make your own music
Sing your own special song,
Make your own kind of music even if nobody else sings along.
You're gonna be knowing
The loneliest kind of lonely,
It may be rough goin',
Just to do your thing's the hardest thing to do.
But you've gotta make your own music
Sing your own special song,
Make your own kind of music even if nobody else sings along.
So if you cannot take my hand,
And if you must be goin',
I will understand.
But you've gotta make your own music
Sing your own special song,
Make your own kind of music even if nobody else sings along
