Countries have the right to control their borders. No country must take in millions of immigrants. Japan doesn’t take in millions of outsiders, neither does china or Nigeria or Mongolia or Iran or almost any non European country. The double standard is ridiculous. Europeans have a right to preserve their own culture as much as anyone else.

I’m not sure whose “bright” idea “de-fund the police” was. It sounds like something right-wingers would attribute to Dems, just so they can mock them. Obviously, people who are democratic want police who do their jobs, not inflict their sadistic mental illnesses on the public. You can’t reform this problem and reform systemic racism by de-funding them. In fact, investing more in creating and enforcing more intelligent hiring criteria and oversight, and in creating better training and in enforcing greater accountability - that’s what any unbiased person would want. And that would require more money, not less.

As a British born but Italian raised I might have a bit more insight and think that as elsewhere politics are getting more polarized, as much as Meloni may be painted as intollerant, the leftwing party politicians seem as much if not more vitriolic and intolerant towards their political opponents, it is getting more and more a shouting match rather than dialogue. I also think that there is a huge pressure derving from the huge influx of illegal economic migrants, arriving in southern Italy by the boatload every day in hundreds and thousands, in an ideal world they would all be welcomed with open arms, a house and a job but a huge proportion of southern Italians are jobless and struggle to find housing. It is easy to say that these movements are xenofobia and fascism but I have not heard anyone coming up with a viable solution to the problem. Right wing politicians in the US keep saying that most central and southern Americans want to flood to the US and over here that most Africans want to come to Europe and that scares and enrages people. Untill the problem is addressed in a global, worldwide manner there is no chance of it getting any better but as that is not going to happen and the liberal parties fail to come up with any credible approach it will continue to encourage people to seek an alternative in the right end of the political spectrum

And even before Trump, it still almost happened in Louisiana in 1991 (David Duke ran for governor. He lost but still got 39% of the vote, or 55% of the White vote). It seems that Duke was the Dawn Star of the MAGA movement. I actually lived there at the time, and I feel very similar airs.

Thanks! Life is better here in Europe. I've seen very little political discontent where I have lived and visited. I am an American (half Swedish) living in northern Europe. Swedes want to curb immigration as there is a common perception that immigrants are not integrating. In my family, we've welcomed my newborn beautiful niece who's mother immigrated from Africa.
Across Sweden you'll find happy people... But there is a lot of tsk tsking happening when immigrants are seen doing illegal things... Usually, littering is the common complaint. The crime wave that is over-hyped by Media is happening mostly in Malmo and suburbs of Stockholm. Gang activity involving teens... My cousin was stabbed in the brain at a mall north of Stockholm! Russian immigrant was leaving grenades in random places in Skane. Events like this are random and not very frequent. However, seeing women begging in the streets of such a wealthy country is disturbing and frowned upon as there is no reason for anyone to do so.
I'm currently across the Baltic Sea in Latvia where Russian oligarchs are the biggest immigration are the biggest problem. 😆

Liberal parties were the right wing in many European countries, but their leaders felt more connected to Obama and Clinton than to Bush or Trump. The problem is that most of the moderate right wing governments have failed for decades, but instead of turning to the left wing alternative, many voters are now turning to the extreme right, partly because of social media and conspiracies. Basically it's the same mechanism that helped Hitler and his ilk rise to power a century ago.

Here me out here…but I think it is good that these far right parties have a few seats in any European Parliament that have multiple parties…My reason is giving these far right people a voice will act as a pressure release valve to those that hold far right opinions…It squashes the arguments of people on the extremes that they don’t have a voice…Finally, as someone who is very much on the left of the political spectrum, my hope is that by giving these extreme parties a voice that they will shoot themselves in the foot by promoting extreme ideas and people can see them for who they are and what they stand for…

There is a need for an international "save democracy" movement on the left as well. But as things look right now, it seems like the centrists parts (still arguing that they want to save democracy) are more busy fighting the "Bernie Sanders" of the world, than fighting against fascism. That is a typical case of wanting to have it both ways. Is there any politician anywhere that have been demanded to answer what their country will look like 25 years from now? Given that America has hefty numbers of most ethnic types, who seem to be all so proud of their roots, what I see is a lot of social fractures. I am a Mediterranean, but I heard Viktor Orban state clearly that Hungarians tend to view their country as white, Christian and with a lot of families underlying their social structures. Resisting newcomers is understandable. Cultural change and adaption is always difficult but also unavoidable. The US, Canada, Australia and New Zeeland are recent examples of mass migration. The indigenous peoples had no say. It just happened.

Rising food costs is certainly not a reason for the rise of fascism in Sweden, but rising crime is, as well as muslim riots, and the habituation of conservative forces to a racist agenda. Christian far right is also involved. But the main reason is that Sweden has been politically unstable since 2014 with less and less bipartisanism and more and more power struggles, so the political power is becoming weak and partially paralyzed. This is a perfect breeding ground for antidemocratic populist forces.
It’s also since 2014 that Putin has been spending $300million on election manipulation & interference. Coincidence? Remember his fury about Scandinavian states wanting to join NATO.

Setting tough constraints (i.e. The Handmaid's Tale premise or Sharia law or Hard-line communism ) makes anyone who sways from the prescribed line as easier to notice. And as such governments tend to be authoritarian/totalitarian the general consensus of such an oppressed people is that you either stay away from the dissenter for your own safety or someone will try to gain favour in the eyes of said gov by snitching on dissent. Add ethnic and cultural bigotry, as the modern far-right is full of, and the only way these people can be described as is fascist.
