  • Woodturner Darren Throop turns a decorative, hollow ornament. Recorded October 19, 2019.
Darren searched "laser cut snowflake ornament" on eBay, but you can also get them on Amazon as well. He found packs of 10 to 50 ornaments. Scroll through to find the delivery and price point that works for your project. There are also different sizes and styles out there, just change the dimensions of the cube, hole diameter and thickness of laminated snowflake to work.

Thanks for this demo, great idea. Unfortunate catch but still got the idea and method over, cheers.

Thanks BayLake and Darren for putting this one up. What a great idea for a decoration and it was good of you to leave the whole video up so that us amateurs starting out can see that unexpected catches/wood break ups can happen to even the experienced professional.

Don't feel bad. This happens to all woodturners. A perfect example why a mask is a must. Nice job.

Very clever design. I would have left the sprinkles on, but that's me and not always a good recommendation. Thank you for sharing. Yes, you probably should have used the skew. As it was you were using the point of the gouge with no support from the bevel. I wouldn't have realized this if I hadn't been bringing on Kent's turn a wood bowl series. If you're going to put yourself out there on video you should probably strive to be a good example to all. You're going to have a lot green viewers who will be looking to you as a role model. Be a good one. You're off to a great start. Thank you again for sharing and keep up the good work.

Daren, enjoyed the video. I tried some variations of approach though. After drilling the holes I made tennons and hot glued them in place. Then, after gluing in rhe snow flakes, and trees and santas, I made a frame tl hold my belt sander that held it square to the work and let gravity hold it in place.
After it was round, making the sphericle shape was tool work. After the hollowing I turned finials and usef them to supportfor the final sanding and finishing. Grest project, good job, I learned a lot and ggot more ideas. TNX

Thanks for this great presentation. Especially the part coming off the lathe, knowing this happens to experts makes a novice like me feel a little better.

Great demostration. I intend to turn at least one ornament, have ordered and received the snowflakes, inexpensive. Would like to see more demostration videos.

Great video . I am very interested in wood turning . I hate that your ornament exploded on you but I learned that things are not as easy as some videos let on . Very informative

On final rounding, I would use a sanding block with around a 180 grit then use finer in steps. instead of a steel tool. RON

Very informative video and a clever design. I don't want to sound critical but you really need a shield for the microphone because it was all I could do to make it through the whole video. It is a long video which is ok but the huffing and puffing of you breathing over the microphone was very trying.

I make snowflakes by the 1000's and not laser or stamped, if you'd want a really thick flake ( I can't attach a picture but google my name or spheramid woodworks) I can send you what you need. Solid wood, not plywood.
