  • This video compares the key actions and piano samples of the newer PX-S series (PX-S1000 in this video) vs the older PX series (PX-560 in this video). Only the default piano sample is used on each keyboard.

    Excellent key action sound test! Something that I find to be very important to me.

    I love the new samples on the casio ps-s line, the piano sounds fuller and i notice more String Resistance in the new samples. Great video Chuck.

    Hey Chuck. Thanks for the comparison. If I heard the PX-560 on it's own I would have said the piano sounded great but compared against the new PX-S1000 those new samples and the smart sensor keys make a huge difference. The PX-S1000 sounds much richer and fuller to me and as ably demonstrated in your video, the keys themselves are much quieter too. I think Casio really knocked it out of the ball park with the new PX-S1000. Just got to wait for the PX-S3000 to turn up now :)

    • @PianoManChuck
      @PianoManChuck  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@no-rq7fp The only "controversy" is the one James Shawcross created. When the unit is turned off, yes the black keys are a bit lighter - but you can't play a unit that's turned off! Once its on, the firmware (featuring "smart, scaled hammer action") compensates for any weight differences - you won't notice anything - same kind of firmware that offers your choice of different velocity settings in all digital pianos. So to compare this (when its off) with an acoustic piano is like comparing apples and oranges. James Shawcross is the same person who actually praised the action on it when he played a classical piece on it... then for some unknown reason he did a 180.

    I know Casio says they've used the same action on all the Privia line, but my 160 and 560 feel very different. They were bought about 2 years apart, and given the variances between different manufacturing lots of similar parts, slightly different techniques in assembly, or just the way the planets lined up that day... they are different. FWIW, I prefer the 160... easier on the fingers. Way less fatigue after extended time playing.
    Looking forward to trying out the new ones, though.

    And for anyone thinking that the PX-560 is twice the price of the PX- S1000, that's not the point. The point is the S3000 isn't available yet, but the action, speakers and piano sound will be the same, and that's enough to help with a buying decision on the S3000. The S3000 doesn't have MIDI sockets, color touch screen etc., so it's an upgrade in many ways from the S3000. The important thing the S3000 and the 560 share is that they're both around 25 pounds, so if the keybed and piano sound are as good as the S3000, then the extra cost for the 560 will be worth it if those features are needed. But only if the action and sound are on a par with the new S1000/3000. Hence the need for more conclusions, even if just stated as personal preferences!

    Very close sound-wise, although the PX560 seems to have a bit more clarity than the 1000 with my headsets-but then this could be an eq difference. The 1000 has a slightly mellower sound, at least on these videos. I think the piano tone difference is very slight, there are several acoustic piano settings on each, from very muted and darker sounds to very bright and cutting sounds. both sound pretty fantastic-I have tried many large soundfont pianos-including the Vienna and others-there is a limitation as to how accurate any digital rendition can sound compared to a full resonant grand piano-but these come as close as I've heard. I've stayed with my 560 and 350 privias-both are holding up quite well-I get no ear fatigue-an indication to me that the sound samples, tuning and balance are excellent on these although I've added extra felt internally to soften the downstroke a bit-does make the digitals a little less punishing to my hands and wrists-all digitals feel like this to me-there is a difference from a true "escapement' action on a grand piano-which always seems to feel more "cushioned" to me. I think the GR casios have a true escapement action. That would be my next step up.

    • @collinpople1076
      @collinpople1076 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thats a good idea.. I'm just curious if you put the felt underneath the keys on the bottom of the keybed or back on the hammer mechanism? Thanks in advance

    • @jokeyman2943
      @jokeyman2943 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@collinpople1076 I had to do both-as the hammers will strike the bottom felts upon rest, and will hit the upper felt strip on key down. Both key actions can make a noticeable clunk if the felt strips are worn-and this is true of any digital I've ever worked on, is not unique to Casio. And the upper felt strip-much harder to install, since gravity will not be your friend. If you do not use some strong adhesive to keep the added (or replaced) strip in place, it can drop down. I had to experiment with a few different things before i found what worked for me. Oddly enough-thicker foam-based double sided tapes will not work-it does not adhere well-and with sticky adhesive on both sides-it becomes impossible. the only strips that worked were the piano felt strips with a single sided adhesive, and these were just barely thick enough to make a difference-thus I mounted these directly over the existing factory strips-which pretty much restored the worn factory felt strips to the thickness when new.

      It is not officially stated but it is true. Both the Hamburg Grand in GP500 and default Grand Piano in PX-S1000 have the exact samples. Of course, the effects in PX-S1000 has been greatly simplified (aliquot resonance, string resonance, hall simulator, etc)
      Another interesting thing I noticed in the PX-S series is the PX-S3000 (the stage piano/arranger variant) seems to have dual sound engine, combining Privia AiR and CT-X AiX sound source

    That was so cool! I was just saying in the Keyboard Corner forum, I was wondering how the action of the PX-560 was compared to the PX-S1000. I wouldn't have minded more of your personal conclusions, like, my goodness, Previa 2.0 is a great leap forward, for the way I play, I connected to the sound and the action more, or whatever conclusion you'd have, with all the details. I probably won't have a chance to try a PX-560, so even just your personal experience and conclusions from playing these two boards would be appreciated! I know every one has a different take, but buying decisions are usually made from comparisons!

    The new casio seems to be very nice for its price. But one thing sounds strange for me: from 1:20 on you play arpeggios on both instruments. I think there is an obvious break in sound continuity around middle c - e on both digital pianos. At this point lower notes fade out surprisingly fast instead of further lasting on and fade out slowly. This is what acoustic piano strings would do and I hope well made sampled/modeled digital piano sounds would do, too.
    So, is it a flaw due to the casio sound engine?

    Hi. I have an old PX-310 and I'm looking for a PX-S1000, but I don't know if keyboard sense of new Privia is considerably better than my PX-310. Piano sound isn't important for me. They should have made the s1000 in 61 or 73 key variants as ultra portable digital piano/midi controller. I have the s1000 & use all the ports; 1/4” left and right out to my studio monitors, 3.5mm audio in from my iPad, 3.5mm out to my Sennheiser & USB to lighting to my iPad. I even used to use Bluetooth. It’s not bad, but it could’ve been a killer with midi over Bluetooth, or just midi & as 61 or 73 keys with hammer action as an ultra slim/ultra portable (vacation piano).

    To me the newer piano, S-1000, did not sound particularily better, just tuned a bit different (though no audiophile myself). Could you try and tune the px-560 to see if you could more closely match the piano sound of the S-1000? Would be interesting if you could try, and make a video of that, being a more professional piano player, with perfect pitch if I remember correctly.
