- Unboxing and demo of the digital piano that generated a tremendous amount of buzz when it was released, the CASIO PRIVIA PX S1000. I'll play the piano sounds for you in a variety of styles and then share my initial impressions review of the sounds, piano action, build quality and features.
This piano is the entry-level piano in the series, which includes the CASIO PRIVIA PX S3000.
In future videos we will do a no-talking, just-playing video and I'll demonstrate some of the acoustic modelling parameters in action, plus review some of the accessories.

Excellent video, and great structure placing the sound and playing samples in between your commentary - so many videos make just one section of playing, and your video makes it very integrated. I definitely appreciate that you're reviewing different makes and models, as it helps those of us who are potentially looking to break away from the proverbial manufacturer's rut (In my case Roland... especially after they fired Ed Diaz... GRRRRRR). I also appreciate your attention to detail regarding action (the comparative key angle shots are extremely helpful) and the speaker quality difference between player position and the opposite side of the instrument is something I wouldn't have thought to consider before. I remember going into a music shop about 2008 and trying all the piano around the $1000 mark - I was amazed that the Privia sounded best by quite a way in my opinion - ever since I've been a fan of Casio...

By the way, recently picked up a Casio CT-X3000 arranger, and it's a really, really good keyboard for the price.
Thank you for your review and your wonderful service to keyboard players. This video is the best piano review of any Dpiano on TH-cam, but still not adequate for a professional or experienced pianist. I really appreciate the slow playing, which was not slow enough, but appreciate the effort and need to play slow for us to hear this piano. High marks for you avoiding the additional sounds, piano is used 99.99999% of the time for serious piano musicians. I think you understand when playing a Dpiano fast on TH-cam makes ALL the Dpianos sound the same, it is VERY easy to get a bad Dpiano to sound good when playing fast. What was missing on your review and all reviews is the decay rate and sympathetic resonance test so badly needed on Dpianos. We also need a blend test, a very slow playing of a 4 note chord by playing the lowest note first, and then holding each subsequent note as you build the chord, this is a great test of decay and resonance. We need single notes and chords played to full decay in at least 5 registers across the keyboard to hear decay length and any artifacts such as looping samples. And then an arpeggio test played very slowing with damper pedal. A real acoustic piano (a good one) will have us using half pedaling too with the damper, this is also extremely important if the decay rates are excellent; most Dpianos have such horrible fast decay that the half pedal is not necessary. I don't have access to these pianos to play and must rely on TH-cam videos to attempt to hear the above requests. There must be over 250 Dpianos on the market today ranging in price from extremely affordable to astronomical for digital, and I have no idea what I am getting for $600.00 or $6000.00 without the above list of sound tests.
No 5pinMIDIdin connections is unforgivable, it is a simple thing to connect a 5pinMIDI to a computer - it is a nightmare to connect a USB connection to another keyboard. We could use these Dpianos for controllers of hardware if only....And speakers, should be mentioned that no speaker on keyboards up to thousands$$$$ will sound good; stereo near field monitors or quality headphones must be used. One might say this Casio is not for a pro, but as a pro this price range is all I can afford and hope for the technology of great sound to be affordable after 30 years of piano sample (PCM) tech. With memory and microprocessors cheaper than 30 years ago I believe there isn't an excuse to have a bad sounding Dpinao anymore. A pro pianist should be able to get a fantastic piano today after 30 years of R&D and the ease of robot circuit board assembly with cheap component cost. Key action is not as important to me, I play professionally as a solo artist, I have to play whatever piano is in the room and after 50 years of doing this can adapt very fast to any action/voicing/tuning/decay/sound.
YES, I am very passionate about Dpianos...so I write this long comment in hopes of changing the review tactics for the future.

@@dtz1000 Well it depends on how far along you're into piano playing that flawed key action can make some songs problematic to play but since I'm just started out this won't affect me much if at all.

Was in the market for a good upright acoustic, and after seeing some reviews on what the Casio PXS1000 and Yamaha P125 could do I was sold on getting a digital.

I bought one of these for myself last summer and I very, very, very happy with it. I'm a beginner/intermediate piano player and this piano is just perfect for my needs. By the way, you have a sound output near the keys so you don't have to put the piano in front of a wall to get a sound return... :)

Finally, a new video! This looks and sounds like a quality piano. Casio has built some great instruments at very affordable prices. Now that you mentioned the CZ-1000, ... research needs to be done. :-)

you should care more about the action, and casio is definitely not a good option
I’m basing my decision on those as well, and the weight and action. Been playing for about ten years now and I’m definitely not an expert, but I do think I know enough to say this is a GREAT option. I’ll be getting my own soon.
Great video. I'm thinking of getting one of these as I would like to return to learning piano. I used to play cheap CASIO keyboard as a beginner but at one point a cheap lifeless keybed was a big downside which finally stopped me from playing. Not to mention limitations of 61 keys format which was a huge disappointment when I wanted to move to more advanced classical pieces.
Thank you for your effort for making these videos as I can imagine they need some time and dedication to make.
Casio has been making some great affordable keyboards/pianos for a while now. I own a 76 key WK one and it's pretty good
Tom Brislin briefly featured in your video during the acoustic piano plays a PX S3000 on Tour with Kansas (Carry on My Wayward Son, Dust in the Wind, etc). It's that good. My family owned a Steinway when I was growing up and I have the prior generation PX-160 which has an amazing feel to it, not much different than the Steinway which had Ivory keys. Sound obviously different but when I can't afford a grand piano, this will do.

Thank you so much! I'm following you since I don't know when, but one thin I learned from you, that key action is king. As an absolutely rookie, I can confirm that. Do not try to learn playing piano on a synth action keyboard - especially on cheap one, unless you want strain injury granted. Trust me, I've been there, I've done that, so you should not even try. You need a hammer action keyboard, period.
Once you made a decision it is the second phase, you need to choose one, that you'll use for quite a long time. This is a long term investment regardless of the price range. Being a wannabe piano player these were the most important factors for me:
- action
- price range
- polyphony
- simplicity - no menu diving
Action is something very subjective. Please do a favour for yourslef: go to a piano salon and try the keyboards. Not just scratch them, try them for 30-60 minutes each. You will not regret the time that you invest there. Do not mess with the other sound than the main grand, usually they are the best and give you the best result to evaluate the dynamics. Once you found your keyboard, go home and come back a few days later for an other 30-60 minutes session/keyboard on your short list.
Price range is from 300-400EUR up to the sky. Since I knew, that I'll use the keyboard with external gears as well, I was shooting for lowest price range regardless of the inbuilt sound. I have real hardware samplers, so I was not keen on the sound itself - though I found that the main grand piano I quite nice in each model. It is surprising that digital pianos are cheaper than hammer action midi keyboards, not to mention that, their action much batter in a comparable price range.
Polyphony is somehing that you might think is a lmiting factor. Once it becomes a real limit for you, you are a semi pro player, playing classical pieces and sleeping on the damper pedal to ring out those notes indefinitely. My digital piano has 32 notes polyphony and can not play so fast, that the notes are getting stealed. I wish I could, but face reality, you might like to be, but youre not Chopin.
Simplicity, simplicity, simplicity. What I want from my digital piano, is that I sit down, put on my headphones, turn it on and start playing the grand piano. I'm not using any advanced features, such a layering, other sounds - they sound crap even against a 100EUR doorstop synth. If you want additional sounds, use a software sampler or buy a vintage rack mount synth and layer sounds with that synth.
Nice to have features:
- AUX IN - they are good for practicing or backing tracks, you can connect your phone as well
- LINE OUT - I agree, line output is nice. But I can live without it
- Better and more pedals - I your keyboard comes with that chepo dumper thingy, invest a few bucks into better pedal(s)
But other thatn that, I'm 100% agree, that you should buy a digital piano instead of a midi keyboard with hammer action.
Surprise! I ended up buying a Casio digital piano one and a half year ago and I do not regret the choice.

I can’t believe that they didn’t launch a 73 and/or 61 key version(s). I’ve got the px s1000. It’s not a “mobile” piano. Midi out or Midi over Bluetooth would’ve been costless AND priceless.
Well, having a 'Piano' and small at the same time would defy the laws of physical size I'd say. At 11.4 kg and with the bag accessory, it IS a mobile piano, not larger than a good old ie. Fender Jazzbass ;)

Excellent playing, but why are people so obsessed with trying to closely match the keyboard of digital instrument to a real acoustic piano? The people who would be buying this would likely never ever play real piano. Many things on the acoustic piano action are necessity due to the construction not a feature for better playing. (except the long pivot you mentioned, that is really beneficial) In fact the things that digital piano are trying to simulate these days (like hammer key off sounds or damper sounds) were historically trying to be minimised or suppressed. Same with escapement - it isn't better for playing, it is a necessity and old piano makers were trying to minimise the feel. The only reason anybody want a keyboard action to match real piano is if they also play real piano professionally (the amount of people doing that is actually very low these days - and if someone is a serious concert player, he/she would have to practice on real piano anyway). People buying $600 pianos are very likely never going to play acoustic grand in their life. Having hard action is also counterproductive for every other sound except piano. In fact all the other 15 sounds on casio would either have a very light action in real counterpart (like electric pianos) or would hugely benefit from a much lighter and faster keyboard. For a general keyboard for recording, people should look for a premium semi weighted keys instead, where most of the digital instruments would be much better and easier and more enjoyable to control. On a typical weighted keys going full 127 velocity require you to smash the keys with a serious force. That gets pretty old and counterproductive for every other instruments (except piano) you want to play. My 2 cents + tax.
Spot-on review. A agree the EPs are weak, but the acoustic pianos are really nice, especially the Mellow Piano. The appropriate effects for piano are present and adjustable. Simplicity is a plus for the S1000, a perfect fit for those who just want a pleasant sounding 88-key digital piano. The S3000 has a lot more tones and an LCD for 140% of the S1000 price. But the fact that the S3000 includes *Trance Lead* as a tone means it is no longer a "digital piano" but is instead a "something else."
I have experienced your problem with timing and you can compensate for that. If your sounds are editable you can lengthen the attack time. It may of course affect the sound itself making it not so in your face so you may have to alter the cutoff frequency and maybe resonance . The timing difference happens because when playing an actual grand there has to be a couple of milliseconds for the key to travel and engage and strike. It seems that many digital piano manufactureres may not have taken this into consideration. I have a Casio PX3 and after doing some such edits (and eq settings, I have managed to create some stunning pianos which are hands down miles better than the stock pianos that came with the keyboard and are a rel pleasure to play. That being said, watching this video I really like the mellow piano. It has so much soul for solo playing.
Hi Woody, nice to see you again!. This is an interesting digital piano if you want a compact one without too many extras (which most times you don't use anyway). I would be tempted if I didn't have so many keyboards around (lost the count, hi!). But I hope at least to play one so I can compare with my current weighted ones, Yamaha DGX660, Yamaha MOX8 and Studiologic SL88 Studio
Cant go past the Studio Logic stuff! Even my Oxygen 88 has more rear key travel than the Casio,but, the Casio does have the triple beam detector setup which I like the idea of.
@@PeterWalkerHP16c I understand you mean you don't like the Studiologic. Well, I got mine very cheap (about 50% of strret price) because of a broken power input connector and being used for a year or so (no big deals either of them). I was curious about that model and at that price I should try it. Paired for example with Pianoteq, once calibrated, it is not a bad controller. The Fatar TP/100LR action is decent. I prefer the Yamaha GHS, probably because my DGX660 was the first digital piano I bought and I got used to it. But I am looking for better actions for a future buying, as the Kawai CA series (now the CA99 is tempting me :-) )

Hi Woody, well demoed. One thing I appreciate hearing is the actual decay of the piano sound. Not the sustain when using a pedal but rather just strike a single note in different ranges of the keyboard and listen for how long (or short) the note rings out. In the past, I have often found the initial sound to be pleasing but the decay to be somewhat short. That, along with the loop points... with some piano sounds, one can really hear them and that inconsistency across the keyboard can also be undesirable. Perhaps this may seem nitpicky, or for more expensive boards, but those factors can give a little more insight into the depth of the piano sample. Cheers!

I own this keyboard, and the piano samples are different from older privias, it has more mid range and a much longer decay, that accompanied with editable parameters such as string resonance, damper resonance, damper noise, key on and key off noise. I would say it's more realistic sounding than the older models that go till the PX-560

only briefly played some kawais, yeah for sure, very nice high-end actions! but need more time with them.
I also had a similar connundrum a year back. I wanted a weighted keybed mostly for practicing. I quickly figured out that a "digital piano" was the way to go. I tried Yamaha, Roland, Korg, Dexibell, even Nord, but the action I liked the most for playing piano was Casio's. So I ended up with a Privia PX-5S so I can use it more as a midi controller. But to my surprise the main piano sounds just as good as any sampled or modeled Steinway (I compared it to Pianoteq, some NI stuff) and even Keyscape's C7.

Yes, please do a comparison between the S1000 and the S3000. I am really interested in the differences and the quality of the additional sounds. And which stage piano/digital piano would you recommend in the price range of about 1200 EUR if you want to get a better, more advanced and more sophisticated keyboard for players with a more professional ambition?

I was really hoping for a Woodyscore...
I was torn between Kawai ES110 and this PX-S1000 the keys on ES110 feel more substantial and chunkier and I have really sweet grand piano sound than one on PX-S1000 if I'm big into playing classical pieces that require more feel then I would go for ES110 but since I'm a beginner learning to play and not much into classical then it's not that necessary for me.
I choose Casio PX-S1000 seemed like I took the easy way out but I can't deny that it nailed my needs for slim lightweight digital piano that can run on batteries and this is like the only model at this price that have that feature and out of the two,PX-S1000 makes the better E.piano sounds.
Can't believe that my first digital piano or keyboard instrument of any kind is a Privia.
Bro, im about to buy a piano to start my learning procces. I would like to play classic pieces, but i don't wanna be a classical pianist, and even, i have never touch a grand piano before. So my question is if i can reproduce sounds from my pc in the piano (i thinks it's called VSTi or Samples) via usb. If this casio can't do this, which would u recomendme in this price range?
One complaint I have with this sound machine is the time it takes from powering on, to being able to play. Sometimes I’m really wanting to bang something out right away lol but have to watch all the lights come on one by one.

If you want the truth about this piano then you will have to go to ThePianoforever channel to get it as there was no mention in this video of the major flaw in this piano of the black keys being noticeably lighter to press than the white keys. I hope it's not too late to return this dud to where you got it from and to get a full refund.

Sounds beautiful! Interesting that you mention the CZ 1000 - from an engineering/physics point of view I always classed that as true FM synthesis and the DX synths as hybrid fm/additive..... but then I was always a bit picky.....

Thank you for this review. I put it on my shortlist for my first every piano, and picked it up today. I loved the slim form factor, and the easy touch screen with stripped down features. Nothing fancy as I just want to learn to play piano. I'm excited to start my learning journey, and this seems a great place to start.

Usually it should be posible to record the audio on your computer without an interface by plugging an "normal" 3,5mm audiocable into the headphone outline in the front of the piano and connect it with your computer (i guess most pc's have a 3,5mm "microphone" input).
In an emergency yes, but expect an inferior sound and plenty of latency unless you have a super duper sound card. But hooking up to a computer in a hurry is a drag anyway. I use a basic Tascam DR5 when I'm just recording one track ad hoc.

My pub test is whether I can sit in front of the keyboard with the speakers close and it sounds like a piano right there at my knees! So far I've only found four, the 'So true' patch on the Fantom, the S6 'Woody' on the Yamaha and Addictive Keys & Pianotec with all the reverb and crap turned off.
Impossible to judge the PX S1000 vie youtube so I guess I'll need to go to a shop a see but your demo sounds promising.
you're right, i'd always recommend trying before you buy, very hard to evaluate when someone else is doing the playing on a vid!

I owned the PX S1000 for about a week but ultimately swapped it for the PX S3000. For me, the additional features were well worth the slight increase in price. Note that the PX S3000 provides MIDI and Audio over USB. It also works well as a controller as it has the addition of two assignable knobs on the piano. I will say that the S1000 does have a slightly sleeker look due to not having these knobs however.

PX-S3000 doesn't have audio over USB, same as the 1000. It has Bluetooth audio, MIDI over USB, and a mini-jack line-in. No USB-audio... Only board in this price range that has audio over USB is the Yamaha P125...
Yes I may be confusing the features. I can plug a thumb drive into the USB at the back and record audio direct onto the thumb drive as a .WAV file. Only on the 3000 though.
It's worth mentioning that over here in Europe, the price difference between the PX-S1000 and 3000 is much bigger (I believe in the US, the difference is only $200, $599 for the 1000, $799 for the 3000). The PX-S1000 costs €545 over here, which is more or less the same price as in the US), but the 3000 is a whopping €899, which puts it above the $1000 mark in US currency...

I'm approaching 50 and would like to learn piano as a beginner. Just for fun. I have only very little experience: many, many years ago I had a Roland D10 with which I played a little bit.
Now I want a simple digital piano that has good action and great piano sounds over headphones. I don't need much more.
At least for the beginning I will put the piano on the table. Can you please measure how much above the tabletop the keyboard surface is?
I'm torn between the Casio PX-S1000 and the Roland FP-10 or FP-30. Do you know them too and can you compare the Casio to the Rolands in terms of piano sound and action?

The primary competition to this piano is the FP10/30 and P125, I don't know which is best though having not played the FP You can't go wrong with any of them.
I've got the White version...It looks great and above all...it sounds better than any other digital piano in its category...Casio strikes again with stage or digital piano...It's worth using the Chordana Casio App with it...to have all the piano and keyboard settings, sound mode etc...Plus...the Piano has bluetooth as well....

The way I remember the size of the bigger jack plug: I think of the Beatles 'When I'm 64' and then minus 1. Which gives 63, therefore 6.3mm. Obviously it's actually 6.35 but I don't have any problem remembering to add the 5.
