You're welcome! Thank you for watching my backstroke video! To answer your question, one way to avoid water going up your nose during backstroke is to exhale continuously through your nose and mouth as you swim. This helps to create a constant stream of air, which can prevent water from entering your nose. You can also consider using nose clips or a well-fitting swim cap to help keep water out of your nasal passages. Lastly, you can try tilting your head slightly back so that your face is closer to the surface of the water, which can also reduce the likelihood of water entering your nose. I hope these tips are helpful to you, and happy swimming! - Niraj (CDO)
This video is awesome and really easy to understand. I just started self-learning backstroke about 1 month ago. I hated it. I tried to watch and understand any other TH-cam videos and had a hard time implementing it. I love how you breakdown the pull into 3 main focus. It's much easier to understand. I'll try to implement it later. Thank you so much!
Thank you for these helpful videos. I am just starting to learn swimming @ 58 Y.O. I am struggling with my breathing. If I hold my breath I can get to the other side of the pool But I know it is not the right way. More practice and hopefully by end of the summer I can nail this down.
You're very welcome! I'm glad you find the videos helpful in your swimming journey. Starting to learn swimming at 58 is fantastic, and I applaud your determination! Breathing can be a challenge, but with practice, you'll definitely improve. Remember to exhale slowly and steadily while your face is in the water, and inhale when you turn your head to the side. Take it one step at a time, and be patient with yourself. With consistent practice, you'll make progress by the end of the summer. Keep up the great work, and keep enjoying the process! 🌊🏊♂️😊

Hi Jonny. Thanks for these priceless videos. I am one of the swimmers who minimises the backstroke to 3 min per day. Its my least favourite. But two points I constantly hear about the backstroke. 1. Its all in the hip. It should move along with the pull. 2. Best to breath in through the mouth and out through the nose as not to get water in. What are your opinions? Especially with the hip movement.
I’m glad you find the videos helpful. Yes, hip rotation is crucial in backstroke. It helps generate power and keeps your body streamlined. Think of your hips and shoulders working together; as you pull with one arm, rotate your hip on that side slightly upwards. This rotation not only improves your pull but also makes the stroke more efficient and reduces strain on your shoulders. Keep practicing and give those tips a try!

@@RocketSwimming l can now swim backstroke very smoothly following your small but useful tips.Though my speed is slow l am enjoying it.once again thanks a lot
I think you can post a video for backstroke that's having curved path. It's a very common problem. There is not much so information for it. In my case my path was curved when i isolated my kick part.
Sure! Your video request is noted. I believe that one of your pull is stronger than the other. Also, keep your head straight and still for the entire stroke. Don't try to look to your side of back.
Great video! I have been swimming mainly backstroke and a little freestyle for years/decades now. I find that I tend to deviate left and frequently touch the left lane line when I lap swim. I don't think its my head, I think its that my dominant hand is my right hand, and its causing the deviation to the left. What do you think?
Thank you for watching the video and leaving a comment! It's great to hear that you've been swimming backstroke and freestyle for years. As for the deviation to the left, it's possible that your dominant hand could be causing this. When you pull with your right hand, it might be pulling harder or at a different angle than your left hand, which could cause you to veer to the left. One way to fix this is to focus on your body alignment and make sure that you're swimming straight. You can try looking at the bottom of the pool or using the lane lines as a guide to keep yourself centered. Additionally, you can work on your stroke technique to make sure that your right hand isn't pulling too strongly and causing you to veer off course. - Niraj (CD0)
This is a common issue. Try focusing on consistent arm movements and a steady kick. Keep your head still and look straight up at the ceiling, using it as a reference point. You can also practice with a lane line or a guide to help maintain direction. You'll improve with time and practice!
Your vedio helped i started to go to pool this month for the first tome. I’m able to backstroke🙂🙂 which I love. But I’m not able to do anything else. I hopefully will be able to sooner.
Wow, you're a quick learner. Backstroke is difficult but you are already doing it. Keep it up and you'll learn all other strokes very soon. Keep me posted on your progress, okay?
@@RocketSwimming sure so here’s the update: First month first day scared of water, watched your vedios, tried watching other people vedio as well but your vedios were the only one making sense to me.(biased me) First week tried floating and kicking Second week after watching your beginner class where you teach how to twist and turn your mouth towards the sky and do beginners backstroke, i tried it a few times, people said focus on freestyle first but i wanted to do what you taught in the vedio. Guess what i was able to twist and turn and do beginner backstroke. Now the current situation is I’m only able to complete a backstroke which is think if you were my real life coach you could correct my posture a lot but anyways, doing freestyle is seemingly difficult for me as I’m finding it difficult to breath from the side. But I’ll update you, I’m gonna watch other vedios of you everyday to get better.
@@RocketSwimming i think my problem is my breathing, its making it difficult for me to swim that’s why i subconsciously do and like backstroke since there is plenty of breathing 🥺
Update 2 : I’m able to freestyle now. The problem was breathing. I’m not perfect but I’ll be after more practice. I’m able to do a dolphin as well for small distance ( well i don’t know what I’m doing is right or not) but i feel it’s much faster than freestyle for some reason) Let’s see I’m sure I’ll need correction’s but since i dont have a coach gotta practice on my own.
Thank you for the kind words! I'm glad you found the video helpful. I would love to hear about your swimming progress, please keep me posted! - Niraj (CDO)
Thank you so much for your videos. You explain the techniques with so much clarity. 🙏 I'd like your opinion on my backstroke.. I tend to go off center in my lane. If you watch me from above I probably look ridiculous. Is the problem the way I'm moving my legs? You mentioned to do a tight, fast kick. Thanks again:)
Thank you for your kind words! To address your question about your backstroke technique, it's possible that your off-center problem could be caused by your head movement. Your head is like a steering wheel of a car, where ever your head turns, your body follows. Try to keep your chin up and head still and let me know how it goes for you, okay? - Niraj (CDO)
@@RocketSwimming Thanks so much for getting back to me Niraj:) Ok I will be more aware of my head position and do what you mentioned. I'm swimming in the morning, so I'll see how it goes! Thank you again😊
Hi Niraj, I did what you told me to do in backstroke. My head was still, but I still kept moving diagonally. I focused on those short rapid kicks and moved more from my hips. That seemed to help, but I still need to keep practicing. I really want to get this, it's a beautiful stroke
Thank you so much! We're really happy that RocketSwimming is your favorite channel. Really appreciate your positive response. Happy Swimming 😁🏊 - Niraj (CDO)
Hey Rocket, You said the BS kick was half as big, but twice as fast as FS. Do you think in terms of a ratio ? For example in FS I learned the ratio was 3:1 kicks to pull.
Hey, great question! Yes, in a way, you can think of it as a ratio, but it's more about the style of the kick. In breaststroke, the kick is shorter and quicker compared to freestyle, but the timing is different since the power comes from that explosive motion. Freestyle has a steadier rhythm, like your 3:1 kicks-to-pull ratio. In breaststroke, it's more about the timing between the kick and glide.

In big pools there are backstroke flags. Backstroke flags help swimmers easily detect where they are in the pool. If your pool don't have flags, try to stop early if you're not confident. Start counting strokes.
You will have to time the arm movement properly. When your arm comes out of the water, they create a water wake which travels back toward your mouth. You have to breathe out at that moment as it will prevent water going in your nose. You can also use nose clips and breathe using your mouth. Keep your chin up. Let me know how it goes for you.
I will suggest you to watch the following video to learn how to float in water. th-cam.com/video/j1HzfmKaXYw/w-d-xo.html Let me know if you have any questions after watching the video, okay? - Niraj (CDO)
To improve your balance and reduce splashing while raising your hand during the backstroke, try keeping your hand closer to your body and use a slower motion. This will help you maintain control and minimize water disturbance. Practice gradually increasing your speed as you become more comfortable with the motion.
@@RocketSwimming thank you so much.. .for your guidance... I like to hear you as you explain thoroughly... Yes, backstroke can definitely be a challenge, especially when it comes to staying in your lane! It can take some time to get the hang of coordinating your arm and leg movements while keeping your body aligned with the lane. Remember to practice regularly and to focus on your technique, and don't be too hard on yourself if it takes some time to get it right. With patience and persistence, you'll eventually master backstroke and be swimming confidently in a straight line. Good luck!

Same here the details are excellent here.
lovely bro ill try today😊
Thank you! How did it go?
I can't maintain stright line while moving on backstroke. I get deviated on either side. Please suggest.
@@RocketSwimming sure so here’s the update:
First month first day scared of water, watched your vedios, tried watching other people vedio as well but your vedios were the only one making sense to me.(biased me)
First week tried floating and kicking
Second week after watching your beginner class where you teach how to twist and turn your mouth towards the sky and do beginners backstroke, i tried it a few times, people said focus on freestyle first but i wanted to do what you taught in the vedio.
@@RocketSwimming you’re such a positive and motivational coach. Thank you so much. I’m also trying breast stroke but i guess my timing is not good.
@@RocketSwimming i think my problem is my breathing, its making it difficult for me to swim that’s why i subconsciously do and like backstroke since there is plenty of breathing 🥺
Update 2 :
I’m able to freestyle now. The problem was breathing. I’m not perfect but I’ll be after more practice. I’m able to do a dolphin as well for small distance ( well i don’t know what I’m doing is right or not) but i feel it’s much faster than freestyle for some reason)
Let’s see I’m sure I’ll need correction’s but since i dont have a coach gotta practice on my own.
Thank you, needed it
You're welcome! Keep me posted on your progress, okay?

Dziękuję. 😮Dużo cennych informacji. 😊
Nie ma za co. 😊
Hi rocket, when the hand touch the water, is it the back hand or the palm.
In backstroke, when your hand enters the water, it should be with your pinky finger first, followed by your palm and the rest of your hand.
Lovely Thanks a lot for your explanation 🥰
Thank you for the kind words! I'm glad you found the video helpful. I would love to hear about your swimming progress, please keep me posted!

@@RocketSwimming I will let you know! Thanks Niraj:)
Hi Niraj, I did what you told me to do in backstroke. My head was still, but I still kept moving diagonally. I focused on those short rapid kicks and moved more from my hips. That seemed to help, but I still need to keep practicing. I really want to get this, it's a beautiful stroke
Nice video 😊

I think the Total Immersion approach, i.e., front quarter swimming, also works with backstroke.
Interesting!

How do you know when to stop? I always hit my head or end too early.
In big pools there are backstroke flags. Backstroke flags help swimmers easily detect where they are in the pool. If your pool don't have flags, try to stop early if you're not confident. Start counting strokes.
@@RocketSwimming thank you.
Do you have a video that shows how to get up when you do backstroke?

Good video, but how to float on your back? I find floating on front easier.
I have posted a detailed video on back float. Please watch it here th-cam.com/video/j1HzfmKaXYw/w-d-xo.html
My problem with Backstroke is that water gets into my nose making me very uncomfortable, making me cancel the backstroke from my set.
I have that problem too. He explains to lift your forehead about 1/2 inch. Not too much!
You guys are too good mehn

@@RocketSwimming ok
@@RocketSwimming hey man i can float but my legs don't come up how to improve that
Keep kicking slowly so your legs won't sink in the water. Little leg movements are enough to keep your legs afloat.

When I raise my hand...I get out of balance....and too much water splashes is there....plz guide

I love backstroke but don't yet succeed.
You will succeed!! Just keep practicing. Don't worry about the initial challenges; every stroke mastered is a victory in itself. You've got this!
Backstroke is tough...I'm all over the lane.
Good luck!
Backstroke is good to regain energy when you are out of breathe and energy
