  • In this video I will be explaining the simplest way to pass General Calculus I at StraighterLine. This credit can then be transferred to many other universities to satisfy your Calculus requirement. This is a really common approach that people have been using to satisfy Calculus for the Computer Science (CS) program at Western Governors University (WGU).

    StraighterLine Calculus Tutorial - Pass Calculus for WGU Computer Science (A Step by Step Guide)
    Calculus has been a barrier to entry for CS and CS degrees for a lot of people, so I hope to remedy that with this video by showing a really manageable wait to pass calculus, specifically through straighterline.
    No matter what level of math you are, even grade school, this video is going to help you, so please make sure you watch it!
    In this video, I'll show you the steps to take, no matter what level your math is, that you can do to work your way up to calculus, and pass calculus at straighter line, giving you the calculus credit required for the CS program at WGU (as well as other colleges)
    What the end result will be
    At the end of this video, if you're someone who has been thinking about a CS degree, but is scared of the math that's involved, you should definitely feel more confident by the end of this video and have a good idea of how to approach learning it.
    Lastly before we get started, I consider myself very average at math
    Content:
    1) Get calculator
    2) Go to Khan Academy Figure out where you need to start
    You need Algebra, Geometry, Algebra 2, Trig, Pre-calc, AP Calculus AB
    Show samples
    3) Register at Straighterline and go through the coursework
    Try to get 100% on the homework (use wolfram alpha)
    Try to get as close to 100% that you can on the "mid-term"
    Get your calculator, relax, and take the final. Even if you fail it, you will pass
    Tips:
    Relax, don't get mad, it's easy to get frustrated
    TAKE YOUR TIME as you go through KA. Don't go over 3 hours per day, take weekends off. TAKE DAYS OFF
    Consider using wolframalpha and desmos graphic calculator. I used these a LOT to try stuff out
    Enjoy conquering Calculus
    Outro:
    Again link to the Texas Instruments TI-Nspire CX II CAS Color Graphing Calculator with Student Software is in the description, it also exists on ebay. I got it from Amazon because I didn't want to wait

    • @JoshMadakor
      @JoshMadakor  2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Hey Jillian, it's not usually needed unless you are some kinda game dev working on a physics engine or something similar. Hence why the Software Development degree exists which has less math and more applicable classes. Discrete Math on the other hand, comes in handy for a lot of algorithms and figuring out their efficiencies. Here is an except I pasted from Carnegie Mellon University:
      _"Calculus is a good means for introducing and reinforcing mathematical rigor. Both differential and integral calculus are important and useful. Multivariate calculus is more directly relevant than calculus of approximation to computer scientists. Discrete Math and Logic are essential for CS."_
      Hope this helps! (though, they didn't say why calc is useful😂)

    Question: Khan Academy pre-study and Straighterline Calculus took you 2.5 months or just the Calculus? And thank you, been waiting for you to drop this video since you mentioned it on Reddit.

    • @JoshMadakor
      @JoshMadakor  2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Gosh, well, JUST calculus within Khan Academy probably took me almost 2 months. Maybe 7 weeks? Then the rest of the time was spent in straighterline. And thanks for sticking around and watching it, much appreciated!
      I also gotta say a disclaimer. If somebody doesn't even know algebra (for example), it's going to take them time to ramp-up to calculus. Maybe it will take them 4-6 months if they are starting from BARE BONES SCRATCH. I didn't really have to deal with any of that since my math was already "up". So just hopping into calculus was 2.5 months total. Hope this makes sense :)

    I've seen your videos on WGUs Computer Science degree and saw the Calculus 1 requirement. The furthest I got in college was Algebra 2 and that was in 2009. How difficult would it be to just jump into calculus 1 now??

    • @JoshMadakor
      @JoshMadakor  2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Hey Adrian, if you follow the advice in this video it's not so bad. You can really expedite it if you focus on learning how to use your calculator and fast-track it with Khan Academy. Study-dot-com has a calculus transfer now actually, which MIGHT be easier than straighterline, but I don't know! If you stopped at Algebra 2, I would probably budget like 4-5 months to focus purely on math and see if you can do up to AP Calculus AB in Khan Academy. Careful not to overdo it though, 3 hours per day on math is about my limit. It sucks, but it's not easy to just power through it. Best of luck :)

      Algebra is kid of the language of calculus, but maybe you can just hit Calculus and learn algebra along the way

    You said precalculus AP AB, but WGU allows you to use that to register.
    After you did the precal and entered WGU did you do the calculus so you wouldn’t have to do calculus with WGU?

      I've read online that WGU calculus classes are awful and it's better to knock it out of the way. If you struggle with math, I'd definitely recommend doing it this way. There's also sophia which has unproctered exams to my knowledge.

      Doing pre calculus will get you accepted into WGU.
      However, completing calculus will knock the whole class off and gain you acceptance

    How many exams are there on straighterline for the calculus course?

      You can take calc1 on Sophia now. Open book.

    Oh man, this calculator seems so fun, selling it anytime soon? Lol just kidding. I passed in the old days with pen and paper in another world, we used Matlab for graphs and it was pain to download over a 4.5kb connection.
    Now I just hope I don't have to take calculus again

      Sounds like you had a hard time with Calc lol, at least harder than I did at SL. The calculator literally saved me lol. I hope not! you doing the CS program?

    My question is, how much of calc and trig are used when working in an IT job? Probably very little? lol

      lmao, zero for me. I've used a bit of discrete math though. Very rarely recursion, but I have used some sets. Freakin simple stuff though

    Hey I noticed Straighterline has Introductory Algebra, College Algebra, and Precalc courses before Calc 1.
    You think it might be worth it to take those instead of working on Khan Academy? Part of me feels like a lot of Khan Academy will be unnecessary for Calc 1 and Comp Sci, and it'd be nice and time-efficient to only learn what I'll need to know with the Straighterline courses.

    Do you just pay $69.00 and that’s it?

    • @JoshMadakor
      @JoshMadakor  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Gosh, I forget exactly how the program is, but you pay a monthly fee + a fee for the class. I think It was like a $99/mo fee plus 69 for the class or something? Then there was my calculator as well :o(. Not too bad though, relative to other options, hehe

      @@JoshMadakor which calculator did you use for WGU calculus. I’m in the cloud computing degree but do have an itch to get in computer science as well. Also how long did it take you to grasp the foundational aspects of calculus? The highest math I’ve taken is statistics and algebra.
