    What the vid is about
Hey, this video is going to be about Discrete Math II from the WGU Computer Science track. This is arguably one of the hardest courses in the whole degree. For me, this was definitely the most difficult objective assessment in the whole degree, so I'd like to share my experience and give some tips on how to efficiently approach the course
    What it goes into (Hook)
Basically I'm going to cover x things in this video
    1) Best way to approach the class to pass it the fastest
    2) Method of study
    3) Calculator preparation/modification
    omnicalc - www.ticalc.org/archives/files...
    education.ti.com/en/product-r...
    4) How to easily deal with certain problem types (really important)
What the end result will be
After this video, you should have a better idea of what you're getting into with DM2 and have a pretty good idea of how to attack the course!
Disclaimer: Don't let anything you see in this video intimidate you or dissuade you from joining the program. A lot of the problems I'm going to talk about may look difficult or obscure, but bear in mind the course teaches you how to deal with these problems with nice pictures and animations/diagrams. For the sake of this video, I'm kind of assuming you've gone through those already and I'm just showing some strategies on how to solve certain problems.
Relate the video back to the viewer (Why should they care to watch it)
Explain: What the viewer can get out of the video
Before we get started, just to give you an idea, I'm very average at math and it took me about 3 weeks to pass Discrete Mathematics II. I passed on my first attempt and I used 100% of the time given (2.5 hours)

One thing I *highly* useful was getting a really big whiteboard. One of the things that artificially makes math “hard” is people missing steps because they *don’t show their work*. If you write every step down in detail, your brain does way less work, and problems are easier. Giving myself a bigger workspace really helped me…I found the biggest whiteboard that they would allow and used that.

This is great advice and something I didn't even consider. When I was doing my exam, I ran out of space when doing some recursion problems lol..

    • @tombert512
      @tombert512 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

@@JoshMadakor yeah, recursion is one of those things that isn’t “hard” in the sense that the computations themselves are “hard”, but more that there’s a lot of steps and a lot of things to miss….that and “self reference” can be difficult to wrap your head around.

When you're studying math, once the problems in a section start to look the same, you're done. You understand the material. This is true in applied math fields, too, like physics. This is because the way we use math to describe problems and manipulate related information tends to follow similar logical pathways once you look deep enough. As you do more and more problems, these pathways become second nature and similarities become apparent. Avoiding the rabbit hole; just study until solving this integral looks the same to you as solving some other integral.

I understand why they'd not allow it but I think it is kind of silly. There is a quick and dirty way to do the same thing (with mod I mean) w/o the updates on any calculator. They should just make all the numbers simple enough to do by hand and not allow a calculator all together.

I've just started this course. In my humble opinion, you passing in three weeks even though being self diagnosed as "average in math" is very impressive. How many hours per day did you have to study the material?
Also, do you remember if determining complexity of algorithms was on the OA? I am in this chapter now and it seems like I need to spend weeks just learning this alone.

It was a 74%, but a pass is a pass. My question is regarding the calculator. I purchased the TI-nspire CX II with CAS. _>Did you use the supplemental worksheets at all?_
Come to think of it, I did use those a little bit. I think the help I got from the mentors overshadowed that a bit, but I definitely used those a little bit.
Doing the pre-assessment and then going over it with the course mentors was a HUGE help for me.

Hey Wayne, I recognize you, we chatted on instagram haha. I'll paste my reply here in case it's useful for someone else who comes across this:
Hey Wayne! Swe/dev probably has more remote but most of tech can be done remote so you can pretty much go with whatever path you want. I’d definitely pick the path based on your interests (which might develop/change along the way).
CS math is a pain in the ass, but just because you’re 6th grade math now doesn’t mean you have to be 6th grade math forever! Shoot, we didn’t even know how to count at one point and look at us now. It will just take you a few months on khan academy to catch up. But going cyber is fine too.
I personally like CS better than IT, and IT better than cyber, but that’s just me, haha
Cloud would be a solid choice if you want to get a high paying job kinda fast (lookup Cloud support engineer on indeed)
From there, you can easily pivot to wherever you want. (Coding, cyber, etc.)

How often do you use Discrete math in your profession day to day, my professor is pretty lazy, gives us no notes just makes us take the zybooks course. I'm in discrete math 2 right now and it's going well, just curious if I should be worried heading into the future since I feel like it's going in one ear and out the other. my math level is up to calc 3 at the moment so I feel pretty confident if I need to learn something after forgetting it I can. I've heard from my professor it's really a none factor as long as you aren't doing stuff like AI. any feedback would be amazing thank you.
