The Kangal is a very specific breed. It is certainly considered an "Anatolian Shepherd" as it's a shepherding dog from Anatolia, but all Anatolians are not "Kangal's". There are some very distinct and specific characteristics separating them from a simple Anatolian shepherd. We have a Kangal now but have had many guardian dogs. Our boy Aslan is 31.5" and 140lbs, of loving energy. However, there most certainly is a very animalistic nature to them when provoked and/or when they perceive danger. Ours will chase after any wild animal within its proximity and can kill it so quickly you won't realize until it's over. Aslans favorite animal to go after is the Coyote, then the Fox and the Raccoon. We have been very fortunate to not have had any major vet bills related to his "guardian" instincts and behavior.
Wanted to add that we have a large acreage, where Aslan and his siblings 2 Irish wolfhounds get to watch over horses, chickens, cats and a plethora of wildlife, and to run and play until they drop. He interacts regularly with other dogs and humans and has been socialized since the beginning, going to the farm store, car rides etc... because these types of dogs must be socialized, have room to run and some type of job involving guardianship. I trust our boy watching over our 3 yo granddaughter, which he is absolutely in love with, and feeling that takes a great deal for me. These are absolutely incredible dogs, but I hope they don't get popularized, as the testament to what happens to a dog breed which become chic etc... is not good.

Sounds like a great lifestyle for Aslan and you.
May I ask how Aslan compares to your Wolfhounds in terms of strength, speed etc.
I'm very familiar with the Irish Wolfhound, but I have never had the pleasure of meeting a Kangal.
Here in Australia, the Kangal is unknown to many.

No they are definitely different dog's. Ive owned lgds for a while. I have central Asian shepherds now. I wanted a kangal, so usually when i want or need a specific dog I try to get a hold as many people I can from the area who had the breed for awhile. What I learned is there's not many kangal breeder's in the US. There's breeders here that sale Anatolians as kangals even in turkey. What I gather from 7 people I talked to was even though the dog's look similar they have a few different breeds in them and that's why the Anatolian is larger. The kangal will have a diamond shaped head with a little to no stop from the tip of the noes to the top of the forehead. Similar to a grey wolf and some kangals have been known to have small percentage of wolf in them. As for the name it wasn't turkey or any of the breeders that knows the breed well there that said kangels are Anatolian it was the AKC that put that on kangal. That's why I always try to get ahold of people from the area that knows broken English. The AKC goes off of the kennel clubs and they put their own little spec's on the breeds even though they didn't breed. All they have done is messed up a lot breeds for looks and more money. The German shepherd has changed from the original, the English bulldog, and a lot of other breed's. Now they've gotten hold of the dogo Argentina.

Anatolian Shepherd is not a breed but a term used to describe a dog that is a mix of more than one Turkish LGD breeds.

It is not Goban, it is Choban (shepherd in Turkish). Like Chobani as the yoghurt brand, which is owned by a guy from Turkiye.

If you ask 50 owners, you'll get 50 descriptions. I have a mix. The only thing is the behavior of these breeds is almost identical. They are wonderful dogs. Mine is a family pet, but constantly alert and springs into action as needed. She really likes golfcarts. She doesn't have a mean bone in her body, but recently defended herself against attack from two pitties. She gave as good as she got.

Are they reliable around cats and chickens? Can you walk them in town without them becoming dangerous? Will they guard your property against intruders?

@@virgilgreen3108good with cats and animals. Introduce them young. Introduce them to friends and get them accustomed to loud noises and trucks and what not. They’re great pets. Just gotta train a bit harder for sure since you’ll have a beast of a sweet heart. I have a ASD puppy and a Great Pyrenees 1 year old. Great dogs

A bit of false information here. The Anatolian Shepherds are NOT Kangals, they are 2 different breeds! Please check your information before you place your breed info on here. The Kangal is larger and weighs more. The Anatolian Shepherd can grow to around 30 inches and weigh anyware between 80 and 140 lbs. While the Kangal grows up to 33 inches and weighs 90 to 145 lbs. Don't ever say they are both the same in Turkey!! You will be met with a hostile reception!
