Slight inaccuracy, you track time from the day you played, not the one you are playing. That is so, because you place the blue cube on the start space, and move it in the upkeep phase after you return the patrols. That is so because as soon as you place the day tracker on the 15th day, where END is written, you lose. You only get 14 days to play, otherwise a nice playthrough!

You do have 15 days to play, the first day is the "start" day, you can consider it as day 0.
Nice little game. It is also available for free as an app for smartphones (at least androïd). So there is really no reason to not try it.
