Thanks Andrew. That is very high praise and I'm happy my approach works for you. I'm a firm believer that teaching while playing is the most entertaining and informative way to learn a game. It is not very popular, but hopefully it will catch on. Thanks for watching!
I bought Maquis after watching your play through but am just now getting it to the table. So I watch it again and played with you using the same missions, Patrol cards and your placements! It really helped me learn the game 😁! Then I played the same missions on my own two more times. Such a fun quick worker placement game! Thanks for the awesome play through and teaching me the game! You have have helped me learn many solos!
I've gone back and forth on this one over the years, but after watching your playthrough have just ordered it! I really like your tone, clear audio, and pacing. Happy to have discovered your channel!
I'm glad you discovered my channel as well. I find Maquis quite a fun solo puzzle that I pull out some nights when I want something fast with simple setup. A great design. Thanks!
Hey, great as always! Right now I'm playing again, after month on the shelf. But one thing. At 15:05 I think there is a little mistake. Because you can grab the blue information token at Radio B directly! Because the slash gives you the choice to get it or to take the airdrop action. And only in this case, you have to wait until the next round to get the token you choose from the field. !
I printed this out years ago when it was free PnP and man, I did this game up! I enjoyed it so much! I cut out the player/AI figures and put tmade them into standees, the board was mounted on a piece of Attack! game board, and I cut/folded a box to fit it all in. So it really felt like the retail, out of the box experience that I wanted. So happy to see it's finally happening. Loads of fun and so happy to see it finally hit the retail shelves. Some games have problems with this transition, such as Deep Space D6, PnP was great but the "retail (Kisckstarter) fell flat. Watching this vid, I have to say that Marquis' transition was a complete success as it seems to have kept all of it's qualities that made the game great. Also, great vid. But do I really need to say this every time!? ... Sure, why not, you deserve it!
Thanks for your kind words. I had no idea it was a free PnP once upon a time. Wow. This is a great design and I'm glad it made its way to retail. Thanks for your support!
Excellent playthrough. I just purchased this game and found your playthrough. Very helpful for new players. I like how you present your games in all of your playthroughs. Very easy to follow and to learn from without having to sit through lengthy rules teaches. I feel like I can just jump in and play!
Never thought you could play board games solo until a couple of days ago, so off I went in search of what games to start off from when I found your channel. I saw this video, bought this game and it arrived today. Thank you for showing how to play with a playthrough, it really helped me learned how to play. You are clear and precise not only with your words but in how you show off the game. Well done, sir! And thank you for this video and also your top 10 videos for beginners. You just got a new sub, can’t wait to see what new games awaits us in 2024!
Thanks for the sub, werewitchqueen! And welcome to solo gaming! It is a fantastic hobby within a hobby and we have a wonderful community here. I hope the channel can help you find a bunch of game you will love. Maquis is a great one to start out playing. I recommend checking out my playthroughs for (in no particular order): For Northwood, Cyberion, It's a Wonderful World, Warp's Edge, Coffee Roaster, Mini Rogue, ROVE, Naturopolis, Cascadia, and Cafe. Also check out the Top 10 Next Step Solo Games list video for some recommendations that are just a bit more complex than the beginner list. Those are all great places to start. Don't hesitate to ask questions. I hope you enjoy the channel. Have a fun day!
@@TotallyTabled Yes, I saw your next step video and got some ideas of what to get next. Cyberion is actually on its way, so I will definitely check out your playthrough, and I received Cascadia just yesterday. My next purchase will be Rove and a few Button Shy Games but I can’t seem to find For Northwood anywhere, hopefully more copies will become available this year.
I remember someone else saying For Northwood was impossible to get. That's too bad. I'm sure it will come back into print soon. It has become very popular. Sounds like you are well on your way! Let us know what you think of Cascadia and Cyberion once you get them tabled.
I was in your exact same position last month, and the solo game that changed my mind was Final Girl (you'll learn this very story is shared by many, many people). But then I also watched this video and bought Maquis. So now I have Final Girl, Maquis, Under Falling Skies and Warp's Edge. All very recommended, amazing solo games. (Friday is also popular, but I couldn't connect with the theme).
I bought this game on your recommendation (and the appeal of your playthrough). Really loving it. As someone who has little opportunity to play anything but solo games, it's great to have a solo-only title that isn't a pure card game (yay! an actual board!) and some neat thematic missions to keep it varied and interesting. Would love more right around this play weight and physical size.
I'm so glad you are enjoying Maquis. It's a great little title. Love it. If you haven't, I would recommend checking out my playthroughs of Warp's Edge, Mini Rogue, Cartographers Heroes, Coffee Roaster, Bullet, Cyberion, ROVE, Resist, and Tiny Towns. I think those might almost fit what you are looking for. You might also research Under Falling Skies -- I haven't made a playthrough of that one yet but it is very popular and in a small box. There are also tons of roll/flip and writes like On Tour and Welcome To the Moon that might work. Thanks so much for watching!
I loved this play through: so clear and informative. I’ve wanted Maquis for ages but couldn’t get hold of a copy. I found one on eBay over the weekend and I’m so excited for it to arrive! I love a good solo-only game, and this one seems really thematic.
I'm glad you enjoyed the playthrough. I think you will like Maquis, Emma. The gameplay is very satisfying and it is in a great little package. Thanks for watching!
You were right! It arrived today and I absolutely love playing it. Regret to inform my little resistance cell was unfortunately wiped out just before completing our second mission: I’ll be trying again later!
Shaggie, I have looked everywhere for this game ( along with Black Sonata and S.O.S Titanic) and ended up with tears ! I have been trying so hard to find what I so much wanted but honestly some shops in the UK have not even heard of these games. Maquis looks even better 😤😤😤 Anyway, so happy that you are showing it. AaKR. Well, I can dream on.
Definitely! I have a stack of "nighttime solo games" which are a bit lighter for when I am tired. Right now the stack is this, Resist!, Warp's Edge, Welcome to the Moon and my little stack of Button Shy games (Rove, Sprawlopolis, etc). This one is really great.
It was very nice to watch... love the combination of teaching the rules while playing and also combined with explaining the choices you made. Very well done indeed!
I don't own this game, but after this playthrough I think I want to! Great explanation, and it looks like a really good quick solo game for these dark winter nights

Haven't played for ages and your video was a great refresher. Good pace, clear reasoning and camera work. I would say that I track the patrol cards that have been used using the table in the rule book. It's because the underground network soy on the patrols and know their routines... Yeah, for sure. At some of the harder difficulty levels I think you would have to track that to even have a chance. An app would be awesome. I'm glad you enjoyed the video and thanks for watching Jonathan!
I'm glad you enjoyed the video. It is a small game, but I like the puzzle. It is one I come back to every once in a while and I always enjoy it. Thanks for watching!
Just purchased this game after seeing it on the top 10 list you did. I'm surprised you haven't encased the food...tokens yet! 😉 Thanks for the solo suggestions!
I love this game! Quick question, when you get intel at the radios, why do you put it in the field? I thought you got it directly because it's not a part of the airdrop. It makes sense thematically because you would be hearing the intel for yourself through the radio communications, unlike the airdrop, where they are just letting you know when it will arrive.
Thanks for the play-through! I sought it out because I was unclear about whether resources stay with individual workers or go into a general inventory. From your video and comments it seems like the resources just go into a general inventory, so one worker could collect a weapon at a field and the weapon could immediately be used by a worker elsewhere. The exception to this seems to be the fake ID papers, which are deployed with a worker. Have I got that right?! It makes the game easier but I must say the theme would be stronger if resources were collected and carried with individual workers, eg a worker must deliver a gun to a safe house before it can be used by another worker, and only then if they have it on them.
Hey Shaggi, finally got my own copy of Maquis! Question. Do you have to discard a weapon when you use it to shoot a Milice? Or is it like a fake ID - you can use it once per turn?
Awesome, Emma! I believe with both the gun and fake ID, you must discard the token if used. You can only shoot one Milice per round. The fake ID is placed with the worker and it is discarded only if needed. Hope that helps, Emma!
@@TotallyTabled ahh you are right about the fake ID! Just reread the rules..Look you’ve helped in making the game more challenging but I’m pretty driven to complete all missions haha, thank you!
Sorry about making the game more challenging. Good luck! 😃 You've inspired me to get it back out and try some of the harder missions. Let me how it goes.
@@TotallyTabled Shaggi another question for you if you have the time to answer, no worries if not! - Say send your 3 workers to Radio B, Point Du Nord and Black Market - and then the final Milice placement is on the Grocer. Does the Milicie arrest one worked on their way back to the Safe House, or all three seeing as the grocer is the route that all 3 would use? ... sometimes while playing this game, a similar situation has happened ...I feel like thematically, all 3 would be arrested but that just means you lose the entire game instantly which seems like an oversight in the games makeup? ... Hi Emma! Yep, you lose the game. It is important to create paths back home just so this won't happen. If you track the cards played, sometimes you can be sure that a path is safe, but most times you need to play it safe. It would have more spaces, more workers, be longer, and you, as the Maquis, are stuck in a conflict between Cardassians and Federation. You can't get caught by either, but Cardassians will just kill your workers while Federation patrol will stun, arrest, and move them to a rehabilitation camp, which you might be able to break them out of later on in the game. Maybe one scenario goal is to push them into a war by framing one side or the other with a terrorist act), and scenarios where they will fully engage each other, which might make them default to ignoring you, prioritizeling focus on each other when determining their placement, so maybe that's an easy mode. They'll thin out each other's numbers for you a bit. You get missions from Ro Lauren, Calvin Hudson, and Michael Eddington. Sisko and Dukat are represented on the other side. It's too good and obvious of an idea not to make it. Star Trek: Maquis, a solo worker placement game.
if you have a Worker on Radio A and performs a Air Drop but gets Arrested - does the Resource still make it to the Field? I would think it does since it’s an Airdrop which doesn’t require the Worker to make it home. However, the Radio A location doesn’t have the Shield-Star icon. any thoughts on this?
I honestly do not know how you achieve it but you are able to make any game more interesting... I played this game a while back and was not impressed. I mean it is a nice game but after this playthrough I just gotta go back to it... it seems so much better with your playthrough XD
That is a really nice compliment, Rodrigo. When I make a playthrough, it means I really enjoy the game and that genuine enthusiasm hopefully comes through in the video. It doesn't mean that you will enjoy the game, but maybe it makes the video more fun. Thank you so much for watching!
That definitely appears to be a mistake, but I cannot remember if you are allowed to do that to purposely sacrifice them. I don't think so, but I could be wrong. Thanks for watching!
I thought that in order to spend money from an airdrop that you needed to bring it back first? And I didn't think you could spend during the same turn? This is in reference to your day 2. If I'm wrong, forgive me.
Ah, the rule for an airdrop is you cannot place a worker in an empty field, so you cannot pickup an airdrop on the same turn it was dropped. But you can use the good the same turn you pick it up, just like any other location. Thanks for watching Chris!
Wonderful playthrough. I really enjoy the way you both teach and show off the game without being tedious! Well done!
