I never saw the choir as close to home and human, but it makes sense. To me, it was the perfect and brilliant sound of traveling beyond the final planet, out of the solar system and into the totally quiet cold dead emptiness of space.

What I love about this piece is that there is beauty, mystery, and haunting of space….. I like to think that the journey is going past Neptune and space beyond.

This is possibly my most favourite piece of music of all time. I believe it is the first use of the fade out ending. The thing that always annoys me about performances of this piece, live and recorded, is that they do not perform the fade out as it is supposed to be performed. You usually hear the choir stop. This should not happen, they should fade into the distance so that the listener is unaware when the music has ended and the silence has begun. In a live performance the ladies should take off their shoes and walk slowly into the distance. Importantly, there should be no rush to finish this superb ending.

In my bucket list: observing the northern lights while listening to this and Venus.
This is one my absolute favorites out of the entire suite, next to Venus and Saturn. When I hear this, I don't necessarily think of the deep sea, in reference to the sea god, but of the infinite vastness of space. But hey, this piece works for either places. Both are distant and mysterious, just like the planet itself.

The choir is one of the best pieces of “Neptune,” not gonna lie.

Absolutely. The sound is so haunting and mysterious, but still beautiful. This movement covered by Charles Groves and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra makes it even better. I highly recommend, if you haven't heard it yet.

Hard to believe that this avant garde music was written way before any electronic instruments was invented. With all available sound palette Holst created the history

@@NoOne-kr4jc Don't have the wrong impression. The music we listen to today came from those before us. If we think of it today, someone else probably did before

This orchestra is beautiful, especially in the chorus from this movement. I think Neptune is underrated by many people, it is personally one of my favourites along with Venus. Neptune's fascinating sound is indescribable. One day I dream of being in this orchestra.

Morgan Veal Thanks, we're really glad you like the orchestra! If you're a fan of 'The Planets' you might want to check out our 'Universe of Sound' installation which will be touring the South-West of England this spring/summer. Many of our installations go on tour, so if you're unable to visit we might be coming closer you in the future! www.philharmonia.co.uk/universeofsound

I live in Australia, so I will come and see the orchestra. Thanks for the universe of sound videos, they sound magnificent. I am a percussionist and want to play in an orchestra, hopefully yours someday. I admire and respect you all, thank you for the reply! Morgan.

To be clear, what the English call 'bass flute' is actually an alto flute, as there is a larger, lower instrument which is the actual bass flute: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bass_flute

The way I envision this piece of music is imagine an image of Poseidon and ocean waves and underwater world with singing sirens (or mermaids)

Agree that this is the most stunning movement in the suite - and one of the most stunning in all of Western music - but feel more that the wordless female choir lends precisely an other-worldly quality, far removed from anything related to our daily lives, and further that that's the point. That to experience the mystery of the universe, one must leave Earth and its daily concerns behind.

Lovely videos - would have loved to have seen the chorus - or maybe they were on the track and the orchestra were playing to them? - hard to mic? would've been cool to have seen them behind a door but I guess on the recording it would be a whole lot easier just to fade it out?

Your orchestra played this movement better than LSO. Your bass flutes at the beginning are more magical and sonorous than LSO's. Where to get your CD?

@@philharmonia_orchestra If you need a recording recommendation, I suggest Sir Charles Mackerras with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra. Everything, from the _A New Hope_ reminiscent ending of “Mars,” to the chaotic humor of “Uranus,” is flawless. I’ve attempted to listen to other recordings, but the RLPO is my absolute favorite.
However, one thing about the choir you missed is that in the final measure, it’s just the choir as the door to the room they’re in is slowly closed. It’s as if their voices are being lost to the cosmos.

The animator should be fired for such ugly music notation.
