    • @nikushim6665

      the 9 series was only around what 2015, i think everything but cyberclunk will run fine on a 680 (which was around 2012). Its actually not the beauty of it, that was more so a side effect of game development stagnation from consoles having locked dated hardware and a larger consumer base. There was a time when games would actually push super high end systems. All the chip shortages and the raise of the scalper bots over the past few years didn't help matters.

    • @ficklebar
      @ficklebar 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Me and my brother had issues with the 570 and 580, actually, e.g. Dark Souls 3 wouldn’t very well on it at all. I’m on a 970 currently, love it, but it is time for me to upgrade 😭

    • @g00gleminus96
      @g00gleminus96 3 ปีที่แล้ว +54

      A GTX 460 was never a "speed demon." With Nvidia cards there is a hierarchy and you can tell what tier it is at based on the numbering: The x5x is low tier, x6x tier is low-mid tier, the x7x is mid tier and x8x is high tier. The x9x are a ridiculous tier and Tesla cards are ludacris tier. The xx5 and "ti" editions are the refreshed variants of this same hierarchy. Everything with GT or GTS in front of the numbers (like GT 420) are potato-level.

I recently bought a pre-owned Ryzen 5 3600 with a cooler included. Runs like a charm. (I know it’s not that old, but anyways). Even if I saved only a couple of bucks, everything adds up. It consists of an AMD FX-8350 (stock speeds), 16 GB DDR3 1600 Mhz RAM, GTX 1070 and an old 2nd gen Kingston SSD and 5, 7 year old hard drives for plenty extra storage. Great video! My current gaming PC was an old Dell XPS 8700 I found that was going to be e-wasted. I saved it from the scrap heap and have slowly been upgrading it with used components over time to stay cheap. It's now almost unrecognizable from it's original form (new case, new GPU, SSD, etc) and it's still capable of playing most games with decent performance.

    I'm running a very similar setup (4790K with an EVGA 980 SC) and have been doing just fine with it. I can't completely max out the settings in more recent games but that's not really an issue since they still look great. The thing now is that it's hard to justify upgrading when building a high-spec setup in 2021 costs twice as much as the build I did back in 2014.

      I built my PC in 2015 and I am still running a 4790k and 970. It was perfect and I was completely satisfied with it until these past few months, where it really started showing its age.
      I was concerned that the days of good value PC builds were over, but apart from motherboard and GPU costs, parts are not really that much more expensive and for around the same price you get much more premium components now. I just ordered upgrades for everything except GPU, PSU, and storage and it didn't burn as big of a hole in my wallet as I thought it would. No way I'd be able to justify buying a new GPU right now but when Ethereum phases out GPU mining mid 2022 I'm sure it'll be possible to get used cards for around the same prices as what older 900 series cards sold for new

If you have a computer and don't wanna sell an old laptop (yet), once you get all the files off you can wipe the drives and use it good as new for a little while. I literally just spec'ed a new system this week, but my current one, that I bought back in 2014, is a 4790K Haswell with a GTX 980 and 16mb of 2400 DDR3, and honestly it's played 99% of what I've thrown at it perfectly fine at 1080. Obviously it won't play everything at ultra, but most games it will handle on high (occasionally some tweaking is required to get a decent framerate). I'm only even updating now because my kid needs a PC and it makes sense to get a new system and I'm sure she will be perfectly happy with my old system probably for a few years still.
    Unless you absolutely NEED to play the very latest games at the very highest quality with 60+ fps at 1440+, there's a huge amount of value to be had from these older systems.

I had no clue that it was almost 8 years ago that it came out. It made me realize just why everything is so different today compared to when I was getting into it. My girlfriend is currently trying to get parts for her first build and I have told her a bunch of times that it used to be much more fun because you could run things in SLI and do crazy things like that as well as having more options for what you do with your GPUs and overclocking actually providing a tangible boost. Old high-end hardware is great. One of my machines is still running a SANDY BRIDGE 3960X (I salvaged the chip from a workstation that had been thrown in the garbage at a local design shop). I installed it on an old Asus X79 mobo that I bought off ebay for $60, that came with 16GB of DDR3 on it (half its SATA ports are dead but IDC), mounted a refurbed H110i on it, and immediately OC'd it to 4.7 GHz. So I slapped a refurbed EVGA 1080TI on it and it's been running great ever since. Sure, it's 11 or 12 years old, but the chip is a beast and shows no signs of degradation, easily running everything I've thrown at it, and I'm going to keep using it until it's dead.

Right now a minimum of another $2k for a video card. So $3.5k assuming i reuse all my existing hard drives and other peripherals. Likely I'd look at a monitor upgrade and see what is around in the 3440x1440 space. DDR 5 Ram is off the table at the moment as none around. Be nearly $1000 for 32Gb of that.

My motherboard finally kicked the bucket a week or so ago so I am rebuilding, but for now will keep my 1070 until I see what GPU prices are doing. These cards still fetch a decent amount on the secondary market too, which would go a long way to offsetting the cost of a new GPU.
