Sometimes I just need to say something in a different way. Like the other day I told my autistic 5 year old “could you pull the curtains together please?” He looked at me. I said “could you shut the curtains please?” And he wanted to do what I’m asking but couldn’t quite grasp it, and I finally said “can you make the curtains be closed?” And he smiled really big and immediately went to shut them.
So I don’t know if I just have to find a way to say it that he understands or if it’s just taking him more time to process the request. Maybe both! I always tell him he’s so helpful and learning so much.

Yes, usually asking for less and using less words works better. So trying "close curtains" or "shut curtains" and show him how he can do that if you want to teach the new word. There is also more you can do from my online courses. Learn more here bit.ly/3GZjn7m

My 8yo is getting better at understanding/following directions, but many times it seems to stress her out. She seems like she is trying to do it, but it doesn't quite compute. She'll start repeating a word from the direction over and over while wandering trying to figure it out/complete it.. til I come help her. Even if she looks for something.. I could say it's under the gray chair. She'll say "chair-y, chair-y" getting upset and wandering around looking in the wrong place. It seems like she improves as I tell her something/give instruction or direction and then go and point out/demonstrate it while repeating the instruction.

Yes, it sounds like you need to use more errorless prompting to support her but you also need a plan to fade those prompts. I can help in my online courses! Check out a free workshop here bit.ly/3GZjn7m
