    Hey, would you give some technical info? Talking about Time. What is the average time that the Butane should be soaking the herb at low temperature with a Dewaxing spool with a close loop extractor, using Dry Ice? In the video you mention that even if a low temperature is used the winterization process should be performed after the extraction but that someone has done it successfully without the secondary winterization.
    Another thing: the Time that the herb should be freezed in dry ice (in the spool) before be soaked with butane at low temperature, do yo have this time? All this due to the oil will be used in vapes.

    So with proper de-waxing a company does not need to use propylene glycol or other additives to make vape cartridges?

    Dear Goldleaf, Not trying to quibble about words but you said it's important to completely dissolve the solvent". You must have meant to have the solvent "completely dissolve the solute".-Paul

    It seems like the dewaxing process followed by the ethanol evaporation would yield the oil with all of the terpenes remain? Whereas extracting oil through heat distillation you would lose the terpenes because it’s sensitive to heat?

    • @GoldleafScientific
      @GoldleafScientific  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      If you use less heat it will help retain more terpenes but that doesn't fully solve the problem. The purging process will carry some away regardless.

    Can I speed up the time it takes for the fats to crash out at low temps by reducing the percentage of solvent? In other words, put the solution in a distiller and reclaim 50% of the solvent before the freezing step?

    Yay did my first winterzation and checked it now after 48 hours and got a good centimeter of vax in the bottom so I guess i did something right. I used isopropanol 99.9% because it is easy to get here compared to pure alcohol may be more aggresive but I always use iso so what I get out before winterzation is vapeable so this can only get better from here.

      rzomg use food grade alcohol. ISO is poisonous

      Methanol is also an option.

    Wow! Goldleaf, I can’t believe you just said that. If you start with grain alcohal first you are technically using a weaker, longer pull on the frontiers of chlorophyll, but with a very cold (dry ice)ISO pull of 30 seconds in contact using wide mouth beakers and a timer( remembering that the 31 second of ISO leaving the herb is diverted to a second jar and to be considered the remaining 15 % of the pull. A second run which in effect is also a 30 second run to finish. The second run of course are scallop and half shell THC wax and fat of pearls and chlorophyll. Winterize, rack and purge, pull with alcohol, winterize, rack, reclaim, cure, absolute.

    • @GoldleafScientific

      Isopropy alcohol and ethyl alchol are both alcohols and almost exactly the same in ever respect. There will be no noticeable difference using one over the other. The iso is slightly less polar but it's negligible.

    • @getbennt
      @getbennt 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Goldleaf Scientific again your not seeing that 30 seconds ISO is a safer bet than 3 minutes with grain alcohol. Also trying it both ways with the grain alcohol first, gives very different results.

    I have high purity laboratory grade acetone. Is this safe to use on my bho. I also have laboratory grade ISO. Are either one of these okay. Or is it good rule to only use what's safe to ingest. I also have hot plate w/stirrer buchner funnels vaccum pump and chamber plus quantitative filter papers

    If you do a bho extraction using a dewaxing collum and are after the distillate and terpenes do you have to carry out an ethanol based winterization after blasting and before using a short path distillation?

    • @GoldleafScientific
      @GoldleafScientific  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Maybe..it depends on the extend to which you remove the lipids. Usually butane extracts will still have a minute amount of lipids even after fully dewaxing with dry ice. In that case you would still have to winterize with alcohol, but I have met a few folks that have done it successfully

    • @jackdaymond9775
      @jackdaymond9775 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@GoldleafScientific in your experience would this minute amount of lipids stop the formation of sauce and diamonds? Or would it be highly inferior product compared to full lipid removal?

    • @GoldleafScientific
      @GoldleafScientific  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@jackdaymond9775 All depends on the amount of lipids. If the amount is very small then it shouldn't have much of any effect on crystallization, but if there's enough in there it will make the product much harder to crystallize and will be inferior.

    Hi Ryan, Why did you state that you wouldn't go below (-50C)? I assume that the solubility of the cannabinoids goes down too much......Yes (i.e. as the temp goes down molecular activity goes down as well)? Then what would you suggest would be the ideal temp for hemp extraction? Many manufacturers are selling chillers that go down to (-80C). Thank you.-Paul

    Can you do this with live resin , also can you do so while preserving terpenes ?

    • @nicojordan3542
      @nicojordan3542 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Live resin should be probably dewaxed during extraction so there is no need for winterization in return no destroying of terps. You could always distill your terps with a simple distillation setup and then winterize your material separately.

    • @retardedgenius3989
      @retardedgenius3989 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      no. All polishing will diminish the terps. just is. know your boiling points and cook accordingly.

    If final product is an ethanol extract it would seem like the best option is a water wash.

  • @getbennt

    Each solvent strips something different, one can’t do what the other dose so if you use the wrong one first, you can’t go back and get what you left behind. ISO first, then ethanol. Absolutely.

    • @GoldleafScientific
      @GoldleafScientific  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      ISO and ethanol are both alcohols. They are essentially the same molecule so it really doesn't matter which one you use first, or even if you switched out one for the other.

    • @getbennt
      @getbennt 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Goldleaf Scientific OK, but each is uniquely effecting the herb with one up against chlorophyll, I choose ISO.
