@@Jon-pl3hr You could do this in a wetter climate. I've laid these brick many times and I'm in Western New York. These common brick are just as thirsty here. I usually end up having to soak them for a while first to be able to lay them without them dehydrating the mortar too much and ruining the cure. That doesn't matter for these guys since it's more mechanically held in place as you correctly said and they will also go out on top after and wet this down and parge the outside which will fill in the gaps and add some additional strength and weather resistance. This building style is common in Mexico because it's so hot there. Spot on with everything else you said though. Cheers.

There's great intelligence and genius in all walks of life. I've been on construction sights, working with my hands and around those who work with their hands for over 30 years. Many of these people are just as intellectually gifted as any scientist or doctor or other university trained professional that you might happen to come across. The thing is that many "every day people" assume that those who work with their hands are of below average intelligence and awareness and they treat them as such.
The mason in this video is not a technician, he's an artist!

+E - Money Wow! Talk about jumping to conclusions and making assumptions!
First of all I HAVE read much, though not all, of Principia and the simple fact is that it is very often possible to know how things work without a formal education and without consuming a treatise such as Newtons. Experience can be just as good, if not better, a teacher than formal education and in many areas I believe that it is superior to formal education. I am not embarrassed at all to say that understanding what Newton was communicating in Pricipia is difficult for me. I have an above average intelligence with an IQ that has been measured at 145 but I learn much better than most in less formal ways.
I have seen evidence of this fact illustrated in many ways and countless times in my own work experience and also in my experience as an amateur musician. This idea that a formal education is always superior to experience and that understanding abstract principles can come only from a book is simply not true.
Whether this belief comes from lack of experience or a feeling of superiority from having achieved an advanced education I don't know but the examples disproving such a ridiculous notion are legion. You need only look with an open mind.
Paul McCartney is the perfect example. The belief that the way to obtain the most useful knowledge in music theory or composition is through formal education is patently erroneous. McCartney never had a minute of formal musical training and cannot read or write a musical score yet he has composed symphonies for full classical orchestras and written music that has been loved, appreciated and critically acclaimed the world over for more than 50 years making him one of the most successful song writers in history and the fact that he has composed musical scores for full orchestration shows that formal writing skills are totally unnecessary.
I have been on countless construction sights with master craftsman that have no trouble communicating and passing their skills onto others in ways that do not require good language skills at all. They do what they do very well and they pass on their knowledge easily even when they cannot speak English. I've seen it so many times that you cannot possibly tell me that formality is essential in this regard. They know exactly why they do things in a particular way and they have no problem solving unique problems as they arise. This should tell anyone that they are well aware of the principles that are the foundation of their skills. Many of them are unable to communicate this knowledge verbally or through writing but they do it quite well in other ways that, in my opinion, are much more effective.
Anyone assuming that the Master Mason in this video is just a "bricklayer" or a technician is jumping to conclusions which, in itself, may be evidence of a certain bias.
Your comment appears to me like it comes from an academic aptitude with no actual experience learning in any other way.
So, what exactly is it in my comment that leads you to make any of the assumptions that you write about in yours?
PS, You might want to brush up on your communication skills by taking an entry level college writing course and your comprehension skills in an entry level college reading course.
You cite Newtons Principia yet you seem to have trouble constructing a coherent sentence, tying your ideas and observations into a coherent whole and even making a concrete (no pun intended) and meaningful connection between your argument and what I actually wrote in the first place.
      Good Luck with that!

You would never know it, but when the mortar is the right consistency, air temps are right, humidity considered, perfect amount of lime and Portland in the mix, the "suction" of the mix holds the brick in place. A normal mortal would never understand this if he or she had not ever attempted to work with brick or stone. The Brick/stone sucks the water out of the mortar mix and gets a grip pretty quickly. ESPECIALLY with fire brick. (they are made of a special clay to withstand 2000 F degrees) I recently laid some of these and in five minutes takes a GOOD hit to get one loose.
