    Egyptian architecture Hasan Fathy describes another traditional domes in his book “ Gourna; a tale of two villages “ he used to build the roofs of the houses in his project in 1940s using ancient Egyptian methods and only using natural materials without cement. His buildings are still there and preserved.

    The concrete beam is structurally required for the vault to work. Also it is not true that it is built without steel, you can see it on the plan at 4:55 and you can see rebar sticking out of the beam. The roof will stand up as long as the rebar in the concrete beam won’t rust. That’s why the dome doesn’t have a longer lifespan than a standard reinforced concrete ceiling. The lifespan of the ceiling is the biggest factor in sustainability, if it was really built without steel the brick vault would have the potential to stand for a thousand years, but not when it’s built like shown in the video. There are ways to solve this problem

    • @farmaanandaa
      @farmaanandaa  16 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      Do share your solutions. It will help the viewers on this channel. Thank you.

    • @7_21_44
      @7_21_44 11 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      @@farmaanandaa There are two ways I can think of that could eliminate the use of reinforced concrete:
      1. The first solution would be very high in cost and material usage. You would have to build massive abutments/thicker walls to catch the thrust force coming from the vault.
      2. The second solution would work with thinner walls but would impact the look of the room. You would have to use steel reinforcement spanning across the room to secure the walls in place. This way, you would convert the thrust force coming from the vault into tension, which would be carried by the steel. The key is to make the steel accessible so you can maintain it when it rusts or even replace it.
      This is how vaults above ground (without earth pressure supporting the structure) were built for centuries (before the introduction of reinforced concrete).
      By the way, I don’t want to criticize the craftsmanship of the bricklayers; they did a beautiful job, which is forgotten in many places around the world. This bothers me even more because I know that it won’t last longer than the reinforced concrete beam that it sits on.

    Beautiful! just one suggestion, instead of cement use slaked lime, (When quick lime reacts with water it produces lime water or slaked lime.
    CaO + H2O → Ca(OH)2
    The more you keep it dipped under water like 15 to 30 days its bonding properties increases many fold and old Fort walls and roofs are made this way, still standing today best example of test of time.
    And its more eco/environmental friendly
    Thanks

    • @farmaanandaa
      @farmaanandaa  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You are absolutely right. And we have used slated lime in most of the construction. We have a lime tank built on site. However, the Rohtak domes artisans do not work with Lime because it takes time to set.

      Most rammed earth walls have a concrete "cap". It serves the same purpose as the top plate on a stick frame structure, and it gives you an easy way to install the lag bolts that will hold the roof on, you just insert them into the wet concrete and try to make sure that they're standing up straight.

I have an organic farm. Is it healthy and better? Yes. Is it sustainable? No. Most of the things we do everyday, all of us, have negative impact. I am no judge because I am part of the problem. But, we are the solutions too. I will not appreciate my fault when I know it is wrong.
      I watch Aanandaa videos around 45 to 60 minutes everyday as I learn from them and trying to shift my organic farm into a permaculture farm. I will still watch their videos. I will visit them (if they allow after my anger :D) and learn more on how they do thousands of things better than me and where I can do things differently.
      My concern is tagging a concrete roof to the topic of sustainable housing because it is not. Absolutely not. Cement is a read bad thing. If one has to use (I have it in my place) I would not call it sustainable.
      One can be emotional about wars, politics, movies, so can one be about climate change. I would want all to be emotional about climate change because it is a bigger problem than anything else. That is why my outburst. I am not usually like this, sorry.
      And to add, sustainable building materials are present everywhere, older than current ones, cheaper too, NOT TOUGH TO MAKE. Probably, much easier than making the actual "choice" of building using natural materials. We can switch 100% not in much time. Maybe our current ways of life make it tough to make that choice.
      I still will look up to them for number of other things. 90% of my watched history is theirs. :D

      @@VisharadSaxena Great Sir Ji. I am also planning to shift to village even though I don't have agriculture land. The village is remotest part of Gujarat-Kutch. Want to learn natural farming, organic farming, sustainable living etc before moving there. I am also new to all these but I will switch to that as soon as possible.

    I was under the impression that you avoided Cement totally, but I see again there is usage of cement for pillars, beams, ceiling. So you compromised on experimenting it with 100% effort. Pch I am quite upset with this.

    • @farmaanandaa
      @farmaanandaa  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      We never gave the impression that we have avoided cement completely. We have only minimised its use. Always choosibg an alternative wherever it wasn't absolutely necessary. We have probably used 10% of the cement the house would have normally used. Thats not something to be upset about. Its something to celebrate, as most constructions cannot even achieve that.

    • @farmaanandaa

      A brick dome is less sustainable than a thatched roof, but more sustaimable than a concrete roof. Its all relative. We keep trying to miminise our impact. We can never eliminate it completely with modern living.

    Please avoid using cement, these bricks and RCC. This is NOT SUSTAINABLE. I know it would be better than many many structures around. But, attaching the sustainable to anything cement is incorrect. I understand that sometimes you have to use it and sometimes we cannot avoid, but in that case, please do not promote it as 'sustainable'. I am hurt not because you used it, I know you guys must use it very little. But, understand cement is one of the leading causes of climate change. The word sustainable is INCORRECT in every sense to be used with it.

    • @farmaanandaa
      @farmaanandaa  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Pls don't get emotional. Sustainability is a journey not a destination. If you make it very difficult for people to start this journey, no one will change. We must embrace small steps and not allow great to be the enemy of good.
      This is a sustainable roof options given its life span and material usage. We must support every attempt at using less of cement or other unsustainable materials.

    • @VisharadSaxena
      @VisharadSaxena 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@farmaanandaa sorry, there are far better and sustainable alternates to roofing than cement. I understand, it is a journey but a few factors are a big no. CEMENT SHALL NEVER BE TERMED SUSTAINABLE, THIS IS MY PROBLEM. AND IT IS AN EMOTIONAL ISSUE FOR ME. Cement is a big driver to climate change, like a big big one. Calling it sustainable can never be and shall not be justified. I know you use it sometimes when you do not find alternate. I understand that. But, please understand my point. This was a roofing structure by choice and calling it sustainable is my only problem. In terms of longevity as well, natural structures built before cement still stand tall across the world. Cement has a limited lifespan.
