I feel honestly I've been playing for a long time but have been on and off. I recently dropped it back in 2020 but picked up again about a year ago. Also started a TH-cam channel with a buddy! I don't really care about hardcore meta despite following it and I'll keep up with playing because you never really forget ya know? Especially when you've played since childhood. I just figured if yugioh is a broke mess, so just let it be, there's no getting better it's just adapting to what's there.

A lot of the issues do fall on Konami, it's their game and they are responsible for keeping it 1. Fun to play 2. Easy to play 3. Accessable to play . Knowing that you are going to see the same deck over and over at a locals, regionals, ycs, ect is not fun. The fact that the ban list does not address the issues because Konami wants to sell the current hot deck is infuriating. The game has way too much going on for new players to pickup and learn, unless they want to dedicate themselves to learning the game. I can count the number of kids under 20 that I have seen playing the game on one hand since I came back in 2019. I am in a very competitive locals scene and even though they aren't mean to new players it's a very intimidating area. If you aren't playing meta well then good luck. And Konamis practices for TCG printing of cards is down right disgusting. Bonfire being a super in ocg, seeing that snake eyes is the big thing and making it a secret in the TCG is borderline predatory. Knowing that there are a lot of staples, but neglecting reprints at lower rarity or making them easier to obtain without paying inflated prices. Players have all the reasons to be disenfranchised at this point. The fact that they still play and pay for the game says a lot, the game is flawed, they want Konami to do better and hope they will, but Konami keeps failing them. Players while upset with the game, get to enjoy a little bit of time with friends, myself I get maybe 1 day a week to get out for a bit and when I get to spend that little bit of time with friends. That's what matters more than anything.

America is a capitalist country. The supply and demand is something that is taken advantage of in every business. Could they morally be better and make cards “cheaper”? Sure. But konami doesnt set the prices for these cards. We do. We are the ones selling and buying cards for $100+ at playsets. Cant blame konami for that

    • @bigmangriff8
      @bigmangriff8 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

@@xboy1dax the issue is when a card is printed in super rare, a more common rarity, in the ocg (bonfire), then when they see how it proforms over there, they change it to a secret rare to force the sale of booster boxes to be inflated to get a playset, they definitely have a massive hand in the pricing market. Or creating a deck that needs a card that hasn't been reprinted in over 10 years (trident dragon), put out a video pointing out that it is needed, they are controlling the market. They know what they are doing and they do it without a second thought. Yes america is a capitalist country, but this is also a global game, and a game that is pricing out it's players.

I stopped playing Yu-Gi-Oh in the XYZ era. When i no longer was able to "play" and instead was constantly getting negated and watchig my opponent go on 5 minute long combos i decided enough was enough.
Playground / school yard Yu-Gi-Oh was when you got to live the fantasy of being in the Yu-Gi-Oh universe. Just roll up to duel random people in your area and neither of you had any concept of a meta or even the actual rules of the game. This was the original and GX era for me.
Then i got older (high achool) and me and my friends would build decks and try to improve to beat each other. Eventually lead to playing on dueling network. However i eventually played enough people that the only way to stay competitive was the meta and knowing the rules and deck combos inside out. Eventually it was no longer about buying a booster pack a month and hoping to randomly get something good to augment your deck. Instead it was about targeting specific cards. It was longer build a fun deck from your bulk of cards. Instead now it was about playing the meta fully or else you just cant play against anyone else that was using meta decks.
Now you entered a death spiral of sunken cost fallacy and dont want to quit because of how much you enjoyed it in the past. Forever seeking that same old spark and feeling but having lost what the game really meant to you and why it was fun to begin with.

"or" (i did say "or") i want "summon limit" to be an official game rule. it reads "Neither player can Summon more than two times per turn." meaning i want to knee-cap playing solitaire with yugioh cards. better known as combo decks.
why? because i don't think it fair or engaging to watch my opponent play solitaire with their entire deck for 30 minutes. only to set up a board that essentially says "lol, i wasted your time AND you can't play the game due to an absurd amount of negates. might as well surrender since you didn't get to go first." i want it to be made in a way that both players actually get to play the game. this is most direct effective way to deal with it.
"You can just convince friends or the card shop to make play it" nope. not going to happen because i'm the only one in my friend groups that is willing to give this game a chance at all. and i'm not giving konami money for a broken game they refuse to fix, so card shops and buying cards is out of the question. won't even entertain the idea.

Played a match on Master Duel recently where the other guy's combo went on and on, summoning several monsters, then tributing them to summon another monster and then a link and I was just done, and this was turn 2. I quit before their turn finished. Reminded me why I left.

I'm working on building about a dozen decks, from rogue to tier 1, to loan to people at my locals if they don't have anything remotely competitive to play with. I also donated my entire bulk (around 3+ booster boxes of each set since Battle of Chaos) for people at my locals to take from. I figured this can only help grow the Yugioh community near me

Doing the mental work to find your niche in the game is the hard part that each person needs to do, and if that results in them deciding not to continue then so be it, the reflection on themselves alone will be a valuable experience.

Longtime MTG player here, who has kept myself distant from the franchise for the last few years, but is now returning. Because of that, I feel like I can provide some insight into the mentality of game burnout.
You see, the thing is, this whole idea of a card game living through multiple generations of players is a new thing. Some people get filtered out, and some return. But at the end of the day, these are games made by mega conglomerate corporations, who only care about quarterly profits.
So even though that truth sucks, embracing the fact is its own liberation from being so worried about a game’s direction. Don’t like it? Don’t play it, but sincerely, not dismissively. Sometimes people need to prioritize different things in life, and sometimes, returning back to what you used to love can reignite that passion.
That’s how I feel now with MTG. I kinda gave up in 2019, but kept myself on top of the culture. I decided I wasn’t going to buy into the hype of each set, and instead just buy what looked cool to me.
I liked the Warhammer decks, the Fallout decks, and honestly their Standard sets since Kamigawa Neon Dynasty have been bangers. The game itself is going in a direction I didn’t expect, especially with Secret Lairs, but at large those things just simply don’t matter.
There’s cool stuff I see, I want to buy it. I don’t have the time or patience to worry about how negative things are happening. I just wanna collect and play with my stuff.

My biggest gripe is that I can't even build fun decks because there is always a card or two with 1 print. I was going down a list of potential decks I could make, like S-Force, Melodious, and Amazoness, but those archetypes lack reprints. I want to make decks from newer sets too, like Earthbounds and Flame Swordsman, but again, there are expensive cards that prevents Konami from taking more money from my wallet, and the wallets and purses of others.
TCG Konami should be making zero changes from the OCG deck build packs, as well as, printing cards about 6 months after their first prints, so people can actually build physical copies of their Master Duel decks.

I like my Cyberdarks and Konami did well with making options for Cyber Dragons to segue some extended plays.
I don't expect to be a top ranked player with Cyberdark, Horn, Keel, and Edge, but the love of those cards challenges my IQ to come up with ways I can control how long I can keep a game active or shut my opponent down.

I am a disenfranchised Yu-Gi-Oh player. I started playing competitively in February 2018, which was right after SPYRAL got hit. I ended up playing SPYRAL my favorite deck for years and some other decks from time to time. I eventually ended up winning a regional in Layton, Utah in February 2020 with SPYRAL after Magician's Souls came out. I quit playing after Crossout Designator came out. I was playing pure Sky Striker at the time. I was doing really well against all the meta decks. I was playing in an OTS tourney against a new player who just spent a ton of money on an Invoked Shaddoll Dogmatika deck. I was going to win when I chained Twin Twister to his Shaddoll Schism. He then chained Crossout Designator, banishing his Twin Twister from deck. It was at that moment when I realized that I didn't like this game anymore, and that I hadn't for a long time. The amount of broken cards/decks in the game over the years has been so frustrating that I'm just done. I don't really understand why people continue to complain about the game, but keep playing. As for the power creep, as much as many people (including myself) think that it has gotten out of control, I do think we are at a point of no return when it comes to that. Yugioh has been around for so long and has evolved to the point where it is expected now to special summon 10+ times in one turn, have more interactions on your opponent's turn than on your own actual turn, and have duels rarely lasting three turns. Honestly, the best solution to this would be to have something like MTG's Commander's format, in fact, Yugioh already has that with Edison and GOAT format. Konami just needs to acknowledge and promote it more.

Yugioh has a type of commander format called Deck Master format. It's similar to the virtual world arc of the DM anime, and like MTG commander, where players have one deck master. It can be ANY monster card but that's your deck master. You can bring it out at any time for NO cost/tribute, but if it leaves the field you automatically lose regardless of lifepoints. Also, like commander, deck master format has a strict 1 copy limit, meaning you can only play each card in your deck at 1 copy. The rest of the rules are just standard yugioh. It's intended to be casual just like commander format and to make use of cards you'd otherwise never use because you need at least 40 different cards in your deck not including your deck master.

I've found that I prefer older formats due to the game being slower. I prefer my combos to occur over a period of turns, rather than all in one turn, and the same goes for the back-and-fourth between me and my opponent. I think YGO is a great game and it has fans for every time period. I've personally found a liking for the Tag Force games as they seem to be around what I like. I'm personally interested in a format that doesn't exist, a custom format in which it mixes old with new in a balanced way. I'd love to see that in an automated format.

I'm for sure one such player. I've played tournaments back when red eyes darkness dragon was new back before like elemental hero was an archetype. And games were very back and forth and was quite fun. I also liked syncros and it was great. I ended up starting to be disappointed with the state of the game when tournaments started becoming OTKs and FTKs ( one turn kills and first turn kills ). During the end of my time playing the game it was strictly a game that I played with friends and it worked cause we didn't run OTKs or FTKs when we were casually playing the game. It worked for me. I'm glad I found a way to enjoy I miss it cause I am now away from my friends like in a different cities that basically has no people to play with. I do have legacy of the duelist for Nintendo Switch and playing up through 5ds Era allowed me for the most part play in the nostalgia I have for the game and having characters up through Vrains allows me to also play some stuff that I didn't have when I essentially quit cause of my move. And most video game decks also aren't the complete infinite combos I was seeing that made me not like the competitive scene. So in that video game I got the best of both new and old. While I may never play a tournament again cause of how fast competitive is I can play stuff old and new on legacy of the duelist and have fun like I did. I didn't want to hate competitive cause when my mother passed in 2007 Yu-gi-oh tcg literally saved my life cause it gave me much of the social interaction I needed to move on from losing her. It however is also a reason I didn't want to just quit the game either cause my dark Magician deck contained and I still have it today my first ever Dark Magician Girl card I got from my parents for Christmas when the card was new to the game. Now the deck contains 3 different copies with 3 different artworks the first one from my parents the 2nd that if I remember was from a tin I got from my grandparents whom I also have lost over the years and one from my best friend whom saved my life when I was going through grief. That is my favorite deck I've ever built or played and while I sometimes talk to my best friend due to the miles between us now we can no longer really play like we once did. But I kept the deck due to sentimental value it has for me. Anyway likely a longer response than was expected but I had a lot to say cause of all the game has meant to me and how it went downhill for me competitively.

The problem is, for us players who enjoyed the game and want to play master duel or official formats Konami is honestly doing nothing in the way of making it better, the floodgate hits are nice but it is in no way addressing that Konami is on a hat trick, a 3 run streak of Tier 0 formats, Tearlament, Kashtira and Snake-Eyes, they keep printing cards that should not exist, that make our lovingly built up collections uitterly irrelevant because it's not as if they CAN'T be beaten by an older deck, but it practically requires that they draw the worst hand possible into the best interruption an older deck can put up... and that just isn't that fun and it seems like a trend that will continue of consistently having the one meta deck to rule them all in every format going forwards, not a variety, not one that's just *slightly* better than the competition, but one deck after another with some busted mechanic that puts it ontop until Konami has milked the meta sheep and moves onto the next.
They fundamentally do not seem to care about the health of the game.

My problem with the Modern game is that newer decks have a whole gimmick where they play on your turn. The minute I normal or special summon they take like a 20 minute turn. On my turn and when I do continue after the 20 minute of extra deck monsters out of nowhere, I lose go figure. I didn't even get to play the game.

For me it's forming like a comradery with my friends, like it's us vs. the people at locals or regionals. Like how far can we take our janky decks and improve on it. We have 2 decks, the one we're improving each time (like for me Blue-eyes) and a meta competing deck that is relatively cheap like I use Labrynths. We would switch between them each tournament and see how we do. We end up taking up like 3/4 top spots at our locals each time and it's so satisfying to see the dubs against those top tier decks like voiceless or snake eyes lol

Team APS is basically the only thing connecting me to Yugioh. I stopped playing in 2006 and tried Duel Links in like 2017, but it was way too modern for me and I stopped after a couple months.
Around 2022 I was getting the Yugioh itch again and discovered Team APS and really like the more casual, sometimes Yugiboomer, take and became a fan even though I have no interest in playing modern.
I actually started playing Flesh and Blood as a Yugioh alternative since the modern game has gone way beyond the point of return for me, and I’m having a lot of fun. I also started playing Speed Duel and it’s way more the level and speed I like, but I only have one person to play with and we only play like once or twice a month. "Official Formats" and "ban lists" are never going to fix the game. Older formats can be fun, but they are not all there is. It is the player's attitudes and mindsets that are making the game hard on older and new players.
A ban list or altered format will momentarily fix a problem, but new problems will always arise if the root of the problem isn't fixed. How players actually play the game. How deck builds are managed, and strict card limitations. Since the game basically lets players use whatever they want with little to no restrictions (the ban list) decks are built on the premise that we have near-unlimited resources to draw from. Mid-game or even end-game deck restoring is almost unheard of. We play one way and if something goes wrong we just quit. Exodia draws decks are a prime example, they are capable of going first or second, and as long as nothing interrupts the flow, exodia will eventually be drawn out and a game over is declared. However, if even one card is misplayed or stopped, most players will just scoop and run. Instead of just quitting, try using one of the dozens of cards available to recover what was lost and continue the duel.
If we continue to play the game as is, and if Konami continues to put band-aids on bleeding arteries, the game will eventually die off and the next "big thing" will take its place.

Opening booster packs, pulling a holo, tins for Christmas, the original show, etc. to add to that, I was once a great player way back when, so even if I don’t play anymore I still like to know what’s going on, what new decks are hot, which cards got banned, etc. for example there’s a game called f.e.a.r. That I was once one of the best players in the world at (multiplayer)I haven’t played consistently in over a decade, but I still like to check in on what new players are considered the best now, the new maps, who got caught hacking, etc. once you’ve been submerged and invested so much time and dedication to one hobby, it’s hard to ever truly let go of it. Like, I’ve had stints where I didn’t go back to it for 5+ years, but sooner or later I check back in on the thing I once loved. Kind of like checking on an old ex girlfriend you spent years with.

Everyone has their own graveyard and the only extra rule is that you cannot search the "deck" for any reason. It has made for some wild, insane, super-fun duels that we still talk about today.
    Down with the two-turn meta!
P.S. On a side-note, in the "good old days" of the first three sets or so, there was still a meta. It was called "Summoned Skull Beatdown." Whoever managed to summon "Summoned Skull" first would almost always win. It wasn't the one-turn win, but it was still pretty stunted and common in the tournament scene. There has ALWAYS been a meta for YuGiOh, but at least back then there was some breathing room to do more than one thing...

I quit Yugioh in 2012 when my deck (six samurai) got really limited by the ban list and a lot of the cards I had paid to pull from packs got generic releases. Last year I started watching a lot of mast duel content and played myself which made me wanna try and convert my old six samurai deck to the modern format. Now that I’ve invested they banned a lot of general cards that supported my deck (borreload, baronne, and Isolde) Feels like when I quit the first time. Why invest in all these cards if they’re just gonna banned/limited in the next few months. I’ll probably keep playing master duel but it is a bummer cause I did enjoy buying cards. Now that I have money as an adult and can afford to invest in a deck I like but I can’t afford to buy a new deck every time they drop a new banlist 😅

Something I learned through other games with a competitive aspect to it is if you want to have fun with the game, just play any sort of draft format. Anything else is or will just end up in a meta where the same problems will eventually arise anyways. Drafting adds some randomness to it, limits your options, makes you think how to play the game.
And in case of YGO: the game keeps bragging about its vast card pool. But let's be real here, there's maybe 1% of cards used in any given format tops, the rest no one cares about.

It kinda spiraled out of control because I kinda like the high power floor of modern Yugioh (i joined in 2021, so my favorite decks just lined up with a lot of the modern lore decks like Dogmatikas, Branded and so forth).
I figure if I went back to developing it, i'd probably remove the elements i borrowed from Junior Journey and instead bump up the speed of flip and gemini monsters. It'd also maybe be fun to rethink trap cards so that there's more incentive to play them, maybe develop a mechanic to grab them from the deck.

A rule that some friends of mine and I have put in that has helped a lot is "You can't break your opponent's board until the first Battle Phase/ start of turn 3 (depending on what comes first)", that way while mechanics like Hand traps still get used, you don't need to be dependent on them in your first main phase. It's still quick, but still let's both players do something in their first turns (provided they have the cards to do something). I feel like that could be a rule supported officially because it's always an awful feeling to be starting your first turn and you can't do anything because of five omni negates that are ready to beat you to death after all your attempts to start your turn end up in the graveyard and/or banished.
