    Hi Dan, as a blacksmith I use a mixture of equal parts beeswax, linseed oil and turpentine to put s finish on hot iron work. I think you should add some turpentine instead of the neatsfoot oil and try that. You could then probably sell it rather than giving it a away. I am a bit too far away from from you to pick it up as I live in Australia, or I would have a crack at it myself.
