It's a heck of a great tonewheel and rotary simulation for an old solid state analog organ. That's why the old Korgs (BX-3 and CX-3) are often considered the greatest analog clonewheels ever. Lovely playing as well. Cheers.
Thanks for making such a phenomenal demonstration of this beautiful instrument. I’m afraid you just convinced me to spend a bunch of money on something that I won’t be nearly as good at as you. But, thanks for the inspiration.
There were a few other analog organs out by Roland (VK-1) and the Crumar Organizer but the Korg CX-3 was considered the best and most authentic by a long shot at the time. There's a famous Canadian band called Blue Rodeo that uses these.
I run mine through a Ventilator II into an old 1970's amp with spring reverb and it sounds pretty good. However, the keys absolutely sucks, it is impossible to do palm smears without cutting your hand to ribbons and I find it hard to be very precise with fast runs. Still, I like it a lot, it has lots of charm, and I always get a kick out of borrowing my guitarist's tuner to tune it up!
The Korg CX-3 is the best Combo Organ of all the time Doesn't sound like a Hammond B3/C3/A-100 exactly, but it doesn't have to, because it sounds great in his own way. The Leslie Simulation isn't good, but the Sound of the Organ is awesome wooden, warm and analog. Great Playing, man! Why did you sell this great organ?
Its great in its own right. To be quite honest it was quite ahead of its time. Keyboards couldn't sound like this till at least the late 80's. The Roland D-50 comes to mind.
Fine performances! Use to run my original Cx3 thru an Electro-Harmonix Flanger/Chorus and Peavy Keyboard mixer for warmth/richness and reverb. The later model with digital display is excellent.
How much did you pay for it? I used to have one back in 1983 or so. I had bought it because I couldn't afford a B-3 but I don't recall mine having any kind of Leslie sound, which is what pissed me off back then. (I hear from this demo that indeed, its Leslie sound is not impressive). My Nord Electro 2 is MUCH, MUCH closer to the B-3 . . . how do you like your CX-3?
This is Michael Jagger but this is my alternative account under my stage name. I paid £485 gbp for the analog model and fully restored it. I do like it as it has all the drawbars, percussion, overdrive etc and the fact it doesn't sound exactly like a B-3. It just sounds great in its own right. Granted that the Leslie simulator isn't that good but after all it was the 1970's. It was the first organ that actually sound like a B-3. The digital CX-3 has a better Leslie simulator and retains a similar design. My model dates from 1980. A lot of musicians ditched B-3's for these as they sounded like them and was easy to carry.
Yes, I remember annoying the music store clerk with my insistence that he show me the "closest thing to a B-3 that you've got!" It was 1983 or so and this thing was *expensive* for its time-about $750US if I recall correctly-about $1750 today-and though it was a vast improvement on my Farfisa (a real piece of shit, but a lot of people loved it!)(www.montrealfood.com/dezyre/1982-84/She's%20A%20Diamond.mp3) I remember being vastly disappointed in it. But by today's standards-I now have a Nord Electro 2-it was really a great keyboard. Real wood! I can imagine that with digital assistance it sounds very good indeed! And you play it well!
Todays keyboards use samples of organs to make it sound realistic as possible. Back then analog synths could replicate organs fairly well but just couldn't do it like a CX-3. It really was advanced for its time. You wouldn't get realistic organ sounds like this until at least the late 80's when the Roland D-50 and Korg M1 came out.
Great Playing! I have my eye on one of the used version of the newer CX-3, which I believe is all digital, but I've heard nice things about. This one sounds great though, I'd be interested in how they compare to each other!
First of all, happy holidays! just a query, I found your site on the net and I saw that you have repaired the CX3, I am in Mexico and ,I just bought a cx3 gen 1 and it works fine, only that the leslie does not do its function even if it turns on the led when activating it, I opened it and found a series of loose cables, some is a green and blue pair, of There are two in the KLM 245 B, some go to the level click, that one is correctly placed, however there is another loose pair of the same color, those that go near one of the multicable connectors, and I did not find information about it, nor in the service manual! Another loose cable you go from the psu or KLM 246 is one of the four ground cables, the one on the extreme left side, well in advance, thank you and hopefully you could give me some tip, orientation, wiring diagram or photos !! Thank you very much in advance and have an excellent year! Hugs
Great video! My vintage CX-3 lacks definition in the mid-highs and yours seem to have better tone. Did you adapt EQ settings in your mixer or used an equalizer?
You realise that literally any modern clonewheel is 100 times more faithful than this? You'd need to be a pretty tone-deaf musician not to hear the difference. Unless you play for chauvinism, that is. You also seem to have no idea that analogue machines are infinitely worse than digital at imitating instruments.
I never understood why they switched to making these digital. It’s all just plain sine waves. Nothing that analog oscillators can’t do just as well as digital.
Best demo I’ve seen of the CX3 - clear understanding of how to use drawbars and rotary on/off to max effect!
I had one of those in the 80’s Thanks for the memories
Ich bin so froh und dankbar eine Korg CX 3 mein eigen zu nennen 🎉🎉😂❤
Ahhhhhh analog. It's so refreshing. A single purpose piece of musical electric wizardry :)

This keyboard is pure gold

Behringer should clone this clonewheel!
I wish I could play my CX-3 this well

People doing palm smears on keyboards are exactly why I’d never trust buying a used one. Keys aren’t meant to be wrenched sideways.
Love your chord progressions at 2:20

Sounds awesome, much more authentic than any digital Korg or Hammond that came after. Also better than the B100.
I just picked up my CX-3 yesterday. This is the reason why i bought one.

Korg did a really good job of this.
Tone for days, right there.
nice playing!
Merci!
Gorgeous sound. Nice playing technique.
You play so great!!!!
Really nice! Great playing and sound on that old CX3.

I have just bought its big brother, the bx3 and it sounds very nice. Next week I will get a Leslie 760, as the rotary simulation is not that great.
great old clone
Nice sound, thanks for posting
Me ha encantado escucharte ¡¡¡ ;-)

This video is quite old, I don’t really remember my recording setup. But I don’t think I applied any EQ post recording. Only reverb.
Rockin Church!
You could say that it was one of the first virtual organs ever made and the only one to sound like a Hammond organ at the time.
Very nice track, man!
Hello, I wanted to ask you, do you only use the Drawbars handles to change the sound and the drawbar button?
you are great player!
decent tone. almost as good the xk3. get a ventilator. its an organ leslie effect. absolutely rapturous
Heaven is hidden in your fingers!
Which speakers did you use?
Thanks! No speakers involved. I record it directly into my audio interface.
Hello! I was offered one some days ago and it's in perfect conditions. What's its price in the market?
from 550€ to 800€
is that a gem pro mega 3 in front of your cx3
On the left? That's Nord Stage if I remember correctly...
are these different songs ? can somebody name them ?
00:00 this
2:08 and that
It's just improvisation, sorry :-)
this old analoug CX3 can be plugged into the Ventilator II and presto! . . . will just sound like a real Hammond B3 and a Leslie!!
yup, the Neo Ventilator II 👍👍
I hate every keyboard ever created. Two exceptions: Hammond organs and mini moogs. An' LOVE them.
Unbeatable sound by todays digital china toys with keys...
This video made me buy one. Can't stand high end digital keyboards.

@@andy5178 that may be... but this has its own thing going for it.
the pure tonewheel sim is okay, but the rotary is cheesy... ithis urgently calls for a neo ventilator ;)
Yeah I got a vent2 it's had about 300 gigs with the cx-3 and they're both running fine.
To be honest: I'm a "pro" piano player, but my organ playing sucks :-) I need to get a real dual manual organ someday and work on it...
did you do it ?
If your playing "sucks" then I may as well quit🙄
I never understood why they switched to making these digital. It’s all just plain sine waves. Nothing that analog oscillators can’t do just as well as digital.
What chord are you playing under that first lick? My ears are failing me and it's embarrassing.
| Bbmaj7 Am7 | Gm7 Am7 | ...
That's basically | IVmaj7 IIIm7 | IIm7 IIIm7 | in F major.
Love you playing bro. I hope u can make one with a Roland VK7
Thanks! Don't have access to the VK7, sorry.
@@AlexanderNagel i have a VK-7 and Hammond XK1 also the Korg BX3 and Roland VK8 with tje digital CX3
