When I was about 8 my mother got a Hammond as an early Christmas present (early 1970s). I was just like you, bouncing off the walls when they rolled it in. The history you told is really cool, and how great it is you have connection with people who can keep it “tuned up” (so to speak) and working properly for you. ENJOY!!! Your life hasn’t ended, it’s just begun!
I had no idea that these older Hammond organs used tonewheels to generate each note electromechanically...fantastic ! Great to see the Leslie speaker in operation too.
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE get your Minimoog sitting up on top of that beast and use them together! Two of the most magical sounding instruments ever made. Great video and sound my man!
A most magical instrument indeed. I used to have my Minimoog on top of my Polymoog Keyboard, on top of my Hammond B3 back in the day when I was gigging. I still own all 3 of those instruments today: johnrofrano.com/assets/images/gootch-look-back.jpg
I came into this thinking ‘bloody hell, that’s huge and must be expensive, just use a VST’. Then I suddenly got it. What a gorgeous bit of kit. Simply beautiful.
But some of us have no choice but to live with a VST, but I use the IK Multimedia Hammond app on the iPad hooked up to my Yamaha MODX7 and sounds pretty good. Dream would still be to have enough space to get a C3.
I happen to know a guy in Denmark who has a collection of hammond organs. He has 476 of them. Yes, four hundred seventy-six! He plans to put up his collection on sale very soon.
I worked in a music store in the 70s/80s and was lucky enough to test and play some of the most iconic keyboards of that time. A Hammond B3 with two MASSIVE Leslie cabinets, sounded like pure silver! But the Yamaha CS80 is still on the top of the list, the B3 a close second and the Fender Rhodes on a third. Happy days!
Great instrument. Look for Lachy Doley, for me one of the best Hammond players at the moment. I've seen him live several times, the guy is unbelievable.
I am so excited for you getting your Hammond. Many churches in the USA are still blessed with having them. I still appreciate the fact that I get to play one regularly. They can be a burden at times but they are well worth the expense.
There is something unmistakably engaging about the sound of the Hammond drawbar organ. Claudio is such an excellent player that he showed it off to it's best.
Just a little history from my time with a C3. It was used widely as a church organ so it's a little less bright. More mellow. I used a 145 Leslie when I had mine. The two pieces we able to fill large venue by itself. After you've played it for a while, you'll start to feel the organ talk to you through your fingers. I found it to make you play better. I hope you have fun with your C3. I know you'll love it the more you play!! Also if they didn't tell you, when you push down a key SLOWLY the draw bar tones come in one at a time. Just some little useless knowledge that you can put in the back of you head.
@@julianreverse Yes they are, but through the years the C was more mellow that the B. Don't know how or why. The C that I had, and I don't know the year, was one of the mellow ones. I found a diagram in Keyboard magazine way back when that was supposed to bring in a little more of the brightness and it did. But through the years even the B had different sounds. Maybe it was because somebody modified the B or even the C. It's not a criticism of the Hammond B or C. It's just part of what we all love.
From what I understand, it's either a Bench (B) or Console (C) with 3 effects (Vibrato, Chorus, Percussion). But, I can imagine with the design and age, every Hammond is going to have its own voice in one way or another. Same goes for the speaker box. I have a pair of Leslie 122 boxes and one definitely had a harder life than the other. Adding to the useless trivia: Hammond was a clock maker. The tonewheels can't be tuned and practically can't fall out of tune. The mechanism is driven by a synchronous motor which is tied to the electrical mains frequency. As long as the power grid is doing its job, the tonewheels will always be right.
As a Hammond technician I can assure you that there is not a single thing that is different between a C and B! And also a100s, they have internal speakers and an extra power amp! That’s it
Oh lord, those sounds of Hammond reminds me of the all the remarkable gospel artists. Thank you Doctor ...you did it again, you hit right in the soul of the music.
Billy Preston and Doris Akers come to mind (Doris mostly played piano & directed her choir but she employed a Hammond, prominently, on her seminal recordings)
Really interesting video that I enjoyed watching. It is true that these fine instruments are getting harder to find but we do have a supply in the USA and can ship anywhere. The technician in this video is highly qualified and did a fine internal restoration! Kudos to you sir!
'Welcome to the club - your life is ruined' 😆 Absolutely true. I now own 3 Hammonds & 4 Leslies... most recent aquisition was an A100 with a 145 Leslie and it sounds incredible. Doesn't matter how good they say the clones are, they're never as good as a real one
The church where I served many years ago first as an organist and then as a minister had a Hammond which my mom played for decades. During my years it was already broken and someone sold the Leslie. I had to content myself with a more classic, Italian organ, and synths/keys with Hammond emulations. I never could get the Hammond repaired, but those guts are so familiar to me, although I had no clue about much of that stuff. I had the joy of playing in some working Hammond later and can make some sound of them, but actually learning this technician explaining those parts was so precious, thank you so much. Please make more videos with deeper content on that B3, that is so rare nowadays with everybody concerned only with SEO. Thanks again.
Ah Claudio - this is amazing man! Super playing at the end there, and lovely to see Gregorious on screen - I feel like I need him and Dave to find me a Hammond now too :)
I've seen Hammonds on a fair few funky gigs in my time, but the best of all was at Sela Bar in Leeds, a tiny basement joint where I was blessed to see and hear Dr Lonnie Smith right up close and personal. Love, love, love the Hammond. As always, I was smiling from ear to ear all the way through your video, Claudio. Vicarious Christmas-and-birthday-all-rolled-into-one feels! x
14:00 I, too, have a birth certificate that old. YES! This Hammond is as old as I am :) CONGRATULATIONS, it's beautiful! I never owned a tonewheel Hammond, but in the 1990s I had a kind of jazz rock Blues band (High Tension Generation) and we played old Graham Bond and Manfred Mann covers. Back then, I bought a Hammond X5 which was a transistor-based one from the 1970s. Even that thing was damn heavy, and I have a dodgy back to this day as a memento of touring Europe with it. I'll never forget going to see it before buying it. I pressed a single key and was in love with the sound. There's nothing quite like a Hammond, man - it's worth giving up the studio space, believe me. I'm so jealous!
As much as I enjoy Claudio doing everything in these videos, the one thing that gives me goosebumps sometimes is when he just gets lost in the music, like he did here in the last few minutes of the video. It's clear that Claudio has a deep, deep, knowledge of music, and it's so great when it just comes out unfiltered and spontaneously. I could listen to Claudio jamming like that the whole night.
Hammond, a legend of 20th century music. I share your admiration for this legendary instrument. I want to emphasize the respect you have for instruments in general, you give them the dignity they deserve. Thanks Claudio L-O-V
Great video, love to watch you work. The Hammond was my dad's weapon of choice back in the 80s. Seeing and hearing it really reminded me of the times we would visit the organ shop where he taught people to play on a Saturday.
A Truly Lovely buy. I still regret the day I let an absolutley mint RT3 go for £300 at a local auction. And pre losing it, I was gobsmaked at the weight and had visions of it falling through the dining room floor. I have full envy...🙂
Grazie Claudio per il piacere che condividi con noi ogni volta. Sono davvero felice per te. Thank you Claudio for the pleasure you share with us every time. I'm really happy for you.
This is bringing so many lovely memories back for me. I had a 1959 Hammond A100 with the same Leslie as you, a 145. Both were in immaculate condition and unfortunately back in 2003 I had to sell both to pay my solicitors fee (£5000) for my divorce. Never got over having to let that beautiful Hammond go, but I now play live with ikMultimeadia’s Hammond B-3X which has a virtual A100 with a brilliant Leslie 122 emulation. It will never be the real deal, but it’s pretty close through a PA system. Enjoy your new baby!
Feel sorry for you having to divorce the Hammond as well. Also use the B-3X and it sounds pretty good. Also Arturia B3 is pretty good too! Need to get some bass pedals though!
I've owned about a dozen tonewheel Hammonds over the years and I always say "yes" when someone asks me if I'd like to come get their organ -even if it is a dog (99% of them are not something you'd keep). The junkers are great to harvest parts (transformers, tubes, speakers, bumblebee caps, etc). The point of being known as the guy that will come and get it even if it is junk is that when the person you've helped gets rid of their heavy and huge organ they go back to church or wherever and spread the word. Despite numerous trips to the dump with stripped out Baldwin, Allen, etc, I have been able to cherry -pick some notables. My personal keepers were a '49 CV, a '36 model A, a 60s C3, and now I'm all set with a mint condition late 50s B3 with all the original paperwork and hang tags. After searching a wide radius this mint B3 was
Congrats I'm happy for you! When I found my B3 I was just randomly walking into a piano store, had no idea they had used hammonds and I'm told my jaw dropped when I saw it along side the leslie
Congrats Claudio!! Every time a new modern Keyboard or VSTi comes around and you get fooled into thinking, “ok they really got it now” and then you hear the real thing and realize it’s not close. Then if you get a chance to be in the room with a real Leslie and everything it really makes you realize what an amazing thing it is. One time I got to play with someone who brought his full Hammond rig to a gig. I also got to help unload and load it on to the stage. That was Herculean effort. The thing that most impressed me was how it cut through drums, multiple guitars and bass during a jam where the volume got a bit loud. You can feel it.

Difficult to find these beasts at this side of the pond... They are jewels! I accidentally got a 1936 Model A in UK (Vemia auction), and had to get it shipped to Spain 😂. After that I had to repair it and now it's amazing! It was worth it! ENJOY IT
The most amazing musical instrument that will ever exist (Hammond B3/C3/A100 series) organs were made between 1955-1974. You're a lucky man to be able to share a part of your life with one of these rare beasts. I wish you much happiness 👍
Congratulations! I've had many Hammonds in my life. B's, A's, C's, and M's. The mighty Hammond! They are magical beasts. Nothing else quite like them. Be sure to keep the tone generators oiled. NEVER let them get dry!
Grande Claudio. Sono davvero contento di vederti all' opera sul glorioso C3. Questo strumento ha un anima. Un qualcosa di estremamente contagioso, magico.
Wow. That is such an amazing instrument, can't believe the sound. Nice playing too. I loved these things since I first listened to Deep Purple many years ago. Then I realised they were in a lot more music that that. Just an unbeatable sound. Hard to believe people used to gig with these things though. Heavy!
yeah...there is an old soul become alive again...great to see and to hear these instruments at all, this is what music is about...i had a Eminent grand theatre for 2 years but give it away to some guys who need it in the set up...and when i move to hamburg again, i will give me another one (or a Hammond) for me as a gift back again....the old stuff has to be alive...we have to support each other....love you Claudio...
I learned more about Hammond organs in this video than I've ever known in my life! This was such a fun ride to see all the insides and how it works, including the Leslie speaker. This was so much fun!! Thanks for sharing with the world, Doctor Mix!
You are super lucky to have acquired that Hammond organ! 😃 That piece you played on it at the end was gorgeous to listen to. The organ has definitely found a worthy new owner. I also have to say that Dave is a legend for the restoration work he did. (Of course, you're a legend too)! 🙂
I had the same joy when I got my first Hammond. It was an M102 with a Leslie 760. Now I have an XK system B3 clone with Leslie Pro-line 815. I use a Neo-Vent for silent practice. It would be troublesome to get a real B3 in the house but I still have a yearning for the beast with a 145 or 122 Leslie. Perhaps one day! Love your videos, keep them coming.
Congratulations! You have the original Hammond organ sound. Heavy but very nice. Now think about oil cups filling some times to avoid tone wheels mechanism failure and enjoy playiing Hammond organ!🎹🎹🎶🎵♩
Congratulations and welcome to the club! These things are real beasts. Can't think of anything meaner than a Hammond run through a Leslie - except for a Hammond run through two Leslies, maybe 😁 It's been a real joy seeing and hearing you master that thing, including pedals - wow... Keep up the excellent work!
The size, weight, transportation logistics and maintenance of the B3 make me appreciate clonewheels and VSTs. Yet, there's nothing more satisfying for a player than to be grinding on the real thing and hearing/feeling the sound from an attached Leslie whirly cabinet. I can tell from watching Claudio that he "gets it." 🔥🔥🔥
I learn hammond organ in 2015 in a 3 hammond organ models as New B3, B3 Portable and a SK2 with my awesome teacher also cool jazz organist and artist of this organ brand called Hengcoo Ortega (check it out his music 😁) here in Chile, as disabled keyboardist (with hemiparesis) the moment when I play the Hammond Organ It was love at first sight and I still maintain the style of playing this instrument in every job where I have to interpret this sound, be it in a workstation synthesizer, plugin, etc. This really is a awesome video 🤘😁🤘
*Claudio really makes any instrument shine! I love these demos so much since they are all super-musical and just great to listen to. **18:08** A Hammond jam on an 808 beat. FANTASTIC!* ❤❤❤❤🧡🧡🧡🧡💛💛💛💛🤍🤍🤍🤍 I still vividly recall me "playing" B3's connected to Leslie 122's at full volume in an LA recording studio where I worked for some years. That sheer POWER was literally earth-shaking. Loved every second
Just now realizing I think that I can contribute my love of keys to that friend. He would let me play his upright and that Hammond to no end. Take me back to 2011…
Your excitement for things like these is so genuine and wholesome, it makes me smile just by watching you enjoy it in that way. congrats in the new toy! Abrazo de Argentina, Claudio!

Hammond, Minimoog, *and* Mellotron is what a prog rock keyboardist needs.

After searching a wide radius this mint B3 was
Congrats on your Hammond ! Nothing sounds like a real tone wheel. Enjoy!
Congrats I'm happy for you! When I found my B3 I was just randomly walking into a piano store, had no idea they had used hammonds and I'm told my jaw dropped when I saw it along side the leslie
Wow! I've never heard a Hammond organ sound so good! Bluesy and funky!
Magic sound
Dig out some music either Steve Wineood
Have you never heard great music from the 70s ? ;) Deep Purple, Focus ...
Bellissimo video , bellissimo strumento , grazie Claudio !
Got mine 6 months ago, it's awesome, and the oil smell after you played is so good
So happy for you! Have fun. What bugs me ,I would have cleaned up that rusty transformer.lol
Oh wow, congrats, it is my dream keyboard too!
ENJOY IT
We going to church with Reverend Mix!
Always good to see one of these instruments find a good home. Even better is seeing someone actually using the pedals on them!
That Hammond really sings.
Amazing piece of history
Grande Claudio. Sono davvero contento di vederti all' opera sul glorioso C3. Questo strumento ha un anima. Un qualcosa di estremamente contagioso, magico.
Love the way he plays it like his other keyboards. You can tell this is his first time owning an organ. You can tell an organist immediately
Lucky man, best day of your life. Enjoy forever.
Bravos, Claudio!
Hammond ! Right Choice 🤗
The most impressive electromagnetic instrument ever built.
I have only an HX3 organ, but I made sure that the layout is identical to a B3/C3.
Это наверное самый лучший инструмент 👍👋👋👋🎶♥
The tune uou play is a so elegant mix of classic and modern, a really suggestive use of a hammond
Thank you
Congratulations! You have the original Hammond organ sound. Heavy but very nice.
Now think about oil cups filling some times to avoid tone wheels mechanism failure and enjoy playiing Hammond organ!🎹🎹🎶🎵♩
So Stoked for you Brotha!!! GREAT score for the studio and Huge Congrats🙌🏼🎉👍🏼🔥👏🏻
Congratulations and welcome to the club!
These things are real beasts. Can't think of anything meaner than a Hammond run through a Leslie - except for a Hammond run through two Leslies, maybe 😁
It's been a real joy seeing and hearing you master that thing, including pedals - wow...
Keep up the excellent work!
Living them dream! Gongrats!
The size, weight, transportation logistics and maintenance of the B3 make me appreciate clonewheels and VSTs. Yet, there's nothing more satisfying for a player than to be grinding on the real thing and hearing/feeling the sound from an attached Leslie whirly cabinet. I can tell from watching Claudio that he "gets it." 🔥🔥🔥
It's always a pleasure to see Claudio sharing his excitement with us. This Hammond organ is in great hands!
Congratulations. A wonderful instrument now in the right hands (and feet)! 😎👍
FANTASTIC!*
❤❤❤❤🧡🧡🧡🧡💛💛💛💛🤍🤍🤍🤍
I still vividly recall me "playing" B3's connected to Leslie 122's at full volume in an LA recording studio where I worked for some years. That sheer POWER was literally earth-shaking. Loved every second
My buddy had one in his basement as a kid. We were blessed.
