We have been following this advice for several years now and it ALWAYS works!.
We rarely use the Xbox anymore, except to occasionally watch DVDs. So, after not using the XBox for a while, we always get the Red-Ring-Of-Death.

I was searching for original xbox red ring fix, I tried this on my original xbox and it worked! after years of everything this is the only thing that workedIt's like it forces the machine to reset or something, thanks a lot man! you're a genious !!
Worked for me!!! was bricked for 1.5 years! Its important to note that the thing that bricked my 360 in the first place was a SOFTWARE UPDATE from the connect. So was not likely an incident of overheating. This fix probably just resets a flag in the software.
Also important to note is the timeing.
1. Switch off
2. Switch on
3. As quickly as possible press open tray
4. push the tray half way in. (do this before the center lite stops flashing)
5. wait for that nice sound :)

If it did not work ~
1.You have to turn the Xbox off
2.Unplug all the cables
3.Wait 30 seconds
4.Plug back in the cables and turn it back on!!
P.s. This only works with the type of rrod in the vid!

Just spent an hour and a half tearing apart my 360 and reapplied thermal paste and after reassembly it still did not fix the RROD. I did this tip and and it actually worked!!!!! Awesome, thanks!!!
I don't think thermal paste has anything to do with it I think if u wanna do it the legit way you open it up and put Flux around the CPU chip and GPU chip and then heat it with a heat gun for soldering for 5 mins to fix the cold solder joint idk if you still use this youtube account but I'm saying this 8 years later lol.

A lot of individuals say this is fake and perhaps it is? The Xbox 360 Disk Drive can cause 3 Red Lights although I have never seen nor would i believe this method would work? Perhaps it worked for his unique problem? At least he is not telling you to do something as Stupid as sticking shit in the fans, raping it in a towel or murdering your hole Game System by putting bolts in place of the X-Clamps. Do not bitch at him say thank you it did not work for me and move on, FYI I am qualified component level Electronics repairman with over 30 years of personal experience and prove that by showing Actual Military background in component level Avionics Repairs. and the Owner of a licensed Electronic repair shop repairing all game systems Desktop PC's Laptops ECT. As for me if I was to guess at what the problem of this box was by the way he stood this up like he did i would say he put a penny in the drive or the drive has a penny in it and after standing it on its side the penny moved to the side of the drive allowing it to reset after turning it off then on regardless of how he pushed the button because he did not prove it would stay red light before preforming his trick I would say he knew exactly what was going on or simply did not know there was a penny in the drive and this worked each time for him and he thinks this actually works? Ether way I would like to say ("thank you for your video") And thank you for not showing fake ass repairs that can kill or remove all possibility of any kind of lasting repair like so meny others do on TH-cam Love Daniel of the HGCGamersClube and Clovis X

+Big Guns exactly, all you have to do is put thermal paste on your gpu and cpu and then put your heat sinks back on top of them, let it over heat so the thermal paste will fuse to the heat sinks then let it cool down then bam, it's fixed
His power brick was green and if it was a power failure the disc tray wouldn't be able to open.

This fix actually worked. My Disc tray would not open originally (Unlike in the video) but when holding both buttons on boot it worked

If anyone is reading this comment make sure to never EVER!!! Lay your 360 sideways. Because if you lay your 360 sideways two vents will be blocked off from airflow. This is what usually causes the three rings of death on your 360. make sure to place the 360 upright instead of horizontal that means all vents have airflow.

This happened to my friend. He just unplugged it, put an ice pack on the power brick and one on the xbox, left them on there for like an hour, turned it on, and it worked

the only way to open your xbox with the red ring of death is by rapidly pressing the disc opener,i had it,and i followed these steps,and it works now.
I have an old (white) console. Every now and then i get the red rings. i just turn it off and back on, all good. The power box to power point also gets a red light. I figured its the power box causing it, because it overheats. So i keep a fan on it. Works.
I think it depends on how many rings you get,if its 4,its just overheated and if its 3 than there was a software failure and your xbox needs to fixed or replaced.

2024, this just worked. Let me investigate a 360 Elite i had been given back in 2017, but never had the chance till now to see if it worked or not
It was so weird. I was just playing GTA V for about 4 hours, then i went to sleep for about 5 hours, and i woke up to play my xbox, and it was laggy so i shut it off, unplugged it, and turned it back on. After, i got the red rings of death, and an e64 code. I turned off my xbox and unplugged it, and ten minutes later, it worked just fine.

my very first Xbox 360 had red ring of death about 8 years ago I bought it as used. I never thought trying away you did. I did towel trick it only worked few times then it died for good
It worked! I think it's some kind of override though. If the heat sink isn't seated properly anymore, it will still die again.
i got a red ring of dead twice but as soon as i saw it i would just turn it of and on again and it would work like i said this happend twice and my xbox still works
I should try this, because it makes sense, opening the disc tray overrides the light circuits in the motherboard (main circuit board) that control the power light and the 4 segments because the power light is flashing, and the circuit is still in use so it stops it from showing the 3 red segments, now I get it!
