    My main tip would be to make sure you stay hydrated. My garden thermometer was registering 40 C today so I had to work in very short bursts. We managed to get our canopy over the decking this afternoon (both home-made) and it was such a relief to get into the shade

    These last days I have covered my gooseberry and raspberries oh the weeding keeps me busy but I’ve collected nettles from the footpath and popped them in a bucket of water. I’ve got no comfrey - something to think about. I’ve hilled up my spuds with leaves I collected in autumn and covered my strawberries with orange netting from gas works in the area that was left at the roadside by the workers. No carrots here yet and I’m mowing my daughter’s garden tomorrow to feed my beast! Super video as usual Have a great week from Sheffield oh and I harvest3d more rhubarb which I gave to a friend

    Good tip on the nettle and comfrey feed. Did nettle brew last year but didn’t realise it was for leafy crops. Will look into comfrey for next year or can i buy some and make comfrey feed this year. Will the plant grow enough to give enough for the brew? Agree on the sit down and relax. Was watching my bee hotels being used by loads of bees. Grandkids were fascinated by them. The best was my new family of blackbirds who had made their nest in my cypress tree. Ziggy my cat didn’t care he just chilled while they flew around him. Being 17 he’s seen it and done it with birds so how’s the time to just sleep and chill. Diolch Mr and Mrs W 👍

    Always a pleasure seeing how things are progressing in your UK garden. Good to see you had a successful germination on your parsnips. I'm 12 days in since sowing and nothing yet but fingers crossed. I'm going to look into growing purple sprouting broccoli here. I can't grow it through the winter like you do but I may try growing it for a fall crop by starting it in the summer.
    We've had some cool nights around here lately so I've held off putting all my summer stuff in but I think starting tomorrow we won't be dropping so low anymore. The rest of the tomatoes, peppers and eggplant go in first thing tomorrow morning.
    I was surprised when I saw your strawberries. Mine are pretty much done blooming now and should be starting to turn in a week or two so it looks like I'm actually ahead of you with them. I haven't netted yet but did get it out so as soon I see a red one it goes on. I learned an interesting technique a few years ago about tricking the birds to ignore your strawberries by putting out some red painted rocks ahead of time. The theory is the birds think they're strawberries and find out they're not so when the real berries turn they are discouraged and leave them alone. I don't know if the birds are actually that stupid but I put them out every year anyway haha. Have a good week.

      Thanks Frank, it's always great to hear about your garden there over the pond! We also have a summer version of PSB here to and might be a solution for you to grow for an autumn crop. Here in the UK strawberry season is late May to July might be a bit later this year due to the unusually cold weather we had in April. Thanks for sharing the tip of a painted rocks - maybe it does work. Good luck planting out the summer plants!

    I'm really impressed how you and Mrs W manage to produce so much food all year round, maintain your garden, cut the grass every week, make your own compost and liquid feed, look after chickens. You also have grandchildren and I'm guessing you both work. How do you get the time to do it all? How many hours per week do you spend in the garden? Well done you're both doing a great job!
    Can I ask when to sow the purple sprouting broccoli seeds?
    Thanks.😊

      Your support and appreciation make all the hard work worth it. Thank you for noticing! Yes we both work too. Being no dig helps we have very little to do to the plots. Most of our time is spent sowing, planting and harvesting. We actually do most of the work weekends while filming although Mrs W does manage to get in the afternoons she doesn't work. When the grandchildren are here they love being out with us and they like to help. Grass cutting is always done first thing Saturday morning and now we have lighter nights we can do a bit more after work. PSB is sown next month, it will be featured in the June sow with us video!

    Mrs W, I agree how hard it is to keep up with harvesting the purple sprouting. My freezer is full and we are getting a wee bit tired of eating PSB everyday- longing for something else as the main veg on our plates! I picked another 2 kgs today. It was hot though and we have so much salad in the garden that I decided to try and squish most of it in the freezer. I have my runner beans ready to plant out so I think I will take a chance on planting them out. Hoping the courgette seeds, you recommended arrive soon. I will grow 2 plants of the black Beauty, I have two of Soleil and two of Bianco di Trieste, so that will be 6 plants! Will I regret growing 6 plants? Will I have courgettes growing out of my ears? probably but my neighbours, friends and family are pleased to receive the excess :-) We have lots of nettles and comfrey growing around the allotment so I will have to get some feed made. So useful and great for the crops and the flowering ornamentals. Have you ever grown Strawberry Sweet Colossus? I bought some last Autumn. They are flowering and have produced strawberries in the greenhouse, but they are so tiny. I went back to the seller who said that the early crop is always small fruit but they will produce larger fruit at the end of the season? I wondered if anyone has any experience of these strawberries and if what I'm being told is true? Great tips Barry and Mrs W. Thank you. So lovely to just sit and look at the garden and watch the wildlife. Happy gardening 🙂

    I've seen another no dig video (you know who) and he says to keep the enviromesh on his onions until he end of May..not sure what to do? Also I need to thin mine out, but was hoping to leave 6 in some bunches as well as 4, to give me a range of different size onions, will that work. Any advice is much appreciated.

    • @nodignorfolkgardener4575
      @nodignorfolkgardener4575  20 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

      Hi Stewart, you must do what you think is best. From the research I have done the adult flies are active between March and April. I will only know later if uncovering them in May has caused a problem. My experience of this is only last season when we first got this. However regarding thinning onions, I haven't thinned to that larger number. There is no hard and fast rules, just be mindful you may get all small onions as the space occupied would need to sustain a larger crop!
