    Tidy job there Mr and Mrs W. I’ve tried that wool stuff very good last year. Will use copper tape on some pots as well. I found putting garlic or spring onions among my radish, carrots, strawberries and beetroot, stopped a lot of damage. Beer traps out tomorrow especially around my rhubarb, it’s been chomped to bits. Companion planting book I’ve got is what I’m doing this year again see how it goes. Barry your comment on my radish to let them be and be patient worked a treat they’re coming on nicely. This week some gardening friends helped me clear a section of my allotment and we put up a 3x2 “blow away” tunnel. The frame is old but recycledable . The door zips are broken so I’m buying Velcro to sort them out. I got a temporary cover but it was covered in slugs which I washed off I reckon they will be back once I try to grow, so your video is spot on time wise. I’m hoping this will be a first step towards something more permanent. Thanks as always Pete in Sheffield

    my celeriac seedlings were reduced to stalks last week. I am not a happy bunny. I've done a 2nd sowing but they are not germinating well for some reason. I 'm hoping they will spring up within a few days. I could have cried 😞. My Hostas are staying relatively untouched at the moment, thankfully. Ground beetles are predators of slugs, so I do try to provide a good habitat for them. Also a nice warm compost heap will encourage slow worms which also eat many slugs. I don't put slugs and snails on my compost heap as I worry they will lay their eggs in there and when I spread the compost on my garden in the spring I will be adding small slugs? I often gather mine up from their hiding places and take them into the field across the road. I have read tht slugs and snails have a homing memory up to 60 feet so I take them in to the field about 20 feet to hopefully make sure that they don't return. I have hedgehogs in my garden, b ut according to he hedgehog trust, they will only eat slugs/snails if they are really hungry. Happy gardening 🙂

      I'm sorry to hear about your celeriac seedlings, but it's great that your Hostas are doing well. Your gardening efforts sound impressive with the habitat considerations for ground beetles and slow worms. I'm sure your celeriac seeds will come through Belinda, we don't have any hedgehogs come into our garden and not many frogs but we do have newts!

    I have graduated from the left over beer and lager can traps to yeast sugar and water left to ferment inside for a few hours then shared between lidded containers with four access holes punched in the sides at both ends of my raised beds. They went out a few days ago and have caught masses of the little chompers before they get to be massive chompers so maybe I will gat some crops besides beans this year.

    Applying some joined up thinking to two things you mentioned.. "they lay thousands of eggs" + "We put them in the compost" probably equals working against opperation slugmageddon, you're bringing them into anywhere you use your compost! All mine get free supersonic air fair into the SSSI over my hedge ;) I keep looking out for a slug infected with nematodes (the lump on their back swells up) so I can breed up some nematodes to spray around but they all seem healthy round here!

    • @nodignorfolkgardener4575
      @nodignorfolkgardener4575  หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      I appreciate your thoughtful comment and the effort you put into observing the slugs in your garden. You will have slugs in your compost naturally anyway. If compost is not wet and damp they won't lay eggs, also there are many predators like beetles in there that will eat them and they don't like the heat produced. The weight of the compost also squashes them and the slugs will be in the top half of the compost where there is fresh material. Great comment though - thank you we do appreciate you watching our channel!

    Thank you so much for the time you both took to put this video together. I've def learned alot and am going to start my multi-angled defence this week! i do agree we need to keep a balance in our garden ecosystems, mine is heavily infested with slugs/snails since i only converted it to a kitchen garden last year, its still a work in progress. there are alot of hiding places for them still i need to work on. the only plants so far ive had completely unaffected are those i put in a little raised planter, i think i got it from Pomona fruits, the planter itself is made from a sort of thick felt fabric instead of plastic and they dont seem to want to crawl on it. i was sure i had won, then of course the cabbage white got to them and the caterpillars ate it all haha best wishes to you both and thank you again

    Another option I've had success with is a water garrier with lime dust in the water, I have 50 and 60 litre tubs sitting in the small blue paddeling pools you can get in argos or Homebargain as they are quick and easy to set up by simply putting some bricks for the tubs to sit on inside the paddeling pool and this will stop all crawling bugs.

    Well that 25 minute video flew by. I appreciate you putting in the work to produce this video. I hadn't heard of Slug Gone which I have just ordered. I also saw another YT talking about using planks which I will use once I have planted out my plants. Something I have done for a few years is use decoy plants as 'Feed' for the slugs, things I know they like such as leafy veg and certain flowers such as dahlias and marigolds. I use surplus plants for this.

    Hi it’s always going to be an issue coping with slugs like pidgeons sparrows et etc. one year my lovely swede plants were totally decimated all that was left was a tiny stalk. A whole row. I thought that was it for them but I layed rose bush cuttings that had thorns I layed them all around where the plants were I also layed them near my brassicas that were being attacked and it seemed to work as the swede came back and we got swedes miraculously. I have also used eggshells. Everyone would save my their egg shells🤣it’s not perfect but it does help. I have recently read plant mint near or around your plants or soak cotton wool in peppermint oil as it’s strong smell and the slugs and snails don’t like a strong smell. As we have an allotment we can’t go out in middle of night with a torch picking them off. But that does work. We don’t use any fertilisers or other chemicals on our plot or nematodes. We leave everything to nature. Sometimes we have disasters but usually we can make up for it. So like you said keeping the bottom leaves off the ground and pick up decaying leaves helps. Wool pellets do work but we try not to buy anything apart from a few seeds and a ton of compost. Anyway you usually have great successes in your garden so what you do must work. So let’s keep going working along with nature. 🙋🏻‍♀️

    Give them some beer so at least they die happy 🍺😁 We don't have as much of a problem over here since we are generally hotter and drier than you in the summer. If we are getting a lot of rain and I noticed a lot of damage I use all-natural blend of iron phosphate. I don't use it as a preventative like some suggest though because usually they are not a problem and like you said you have to find a good balance. I'll have to look into the wool pellets. Not sure if we can get them over here.
