    Great idea about the redundant watermaker and getting the AC Rainmaker to use when you have access to good AC power.
    I'll have to remember that one!

    Great intro…..having flown all my life since I was 14, now 66. Whenever a student -pilot was feeling sick I would immediately let them have control of the airplane. By doing that it takes your mind off the motion and when being at the helm, take the auto pilot off, it lets you anticipate the motion of the boat, or airplane. It always works. I need to install a water maker on our boat, the portable model looks easy. Congrats on being back in the Bahamas.

    • @FolsomOceanViews
      @FolsomOceanViews  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sometimes being at the helm works wonders for me, and other times it just doesn't. I think it might depend on what brings on the motion sickness. This time I was filling out customs documents on my computer while we were getting under way, and none of my favorite tricks seemed to help me get over it 🤢. Thankfully I was able to take a nap, and woke up feeling 💯

    Congrats on finally getting a chance to make it back out to the Bahamas 🇧🇸. Green Turtle is amazing along with Treasure Cay. I personally haven’t been back since Hurricane Dorian. I hope and pray the rebuilding process is coming along. We had a blast while visiting the Abaco’s in Jetskis. No Name Cay, Hope Town & Tahiti Beach being some of our favorites stops. Great contentc, thanks for sharing. Can’t wait to see more

    good to see the rain man in action. did you pickle the system after your big fill? love see how u do that in another episode. I think these units are one of the best in the market

    • @FolsomOceanViews
      @FolsomOceanViews  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      We haven't pickled it yet since we plan to use it every 5th day or so, but it looks incredibly easy. Essentially you just put the pickling solution into the fresh water rinse bucket, mix it up, and then suck it into the membrane. Just one extra step than normal! We probably won't pickle it until we head back to the States in the summer, but when we do we'll make sure to film it!

    Sorry Charles, had to. A friend has a "Relief Band" for her motion sickness; they worked so well for her she bought them as Christmas presents for a few people. As for the finances, we have a couple videos that break it all down but the short answer is we could have paid cash but financed a little bit because that’s what made the most sense for us. Our advice is always to do what you are comfortable with 😀

      We thought about the Oxley, but 90 degrees apparent is about as far upwind as it goes and we knew the wind would only continue to swing forward as the day went on - and especially over night. But we are anxiously awaiting the next time we can raise it!

    So what happens if they don't grant an extension in March? While I'm assuming that, odds are, this won't be a problem, would you just move on to a different Caribbean destination?
    Also - you may have already tried this Jes, but my best preventative/relief for seasickness is Bonine. It's what I take on all of our dive trips and will be taking when we go on our liveaboard schooner trip next summer.

    • @FolsomOceanViews
      @FolsomOceanViews  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I am hoping the extension won’t be an issue, but who knows with the current state of Travel restrictions?! We haven’t come up with a plan yet - I think we are holding on to the power positive thinking 😂

    • @FolsomOceanViews

      Yep! It’s a fairly easy process if you’ve already registered it with the FAA. Fill out some online forms, send a photo of your passport, and you’re good to go.

  • @allynonderdonk7577
    @allynonderdonk7577 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Rainman makes a good watermaker. Seawater Pro also has an affordable kit. The Spectra units are not reliable. I'll tell you why. There are like 90 seals in them, and the typical double piston system in them breaks. You won't get 1000 hours out of a Spectra before an $1200-1800 rebuild on the suckers. That is what I spent on my own 35 gallon an hour system...$1800.

    • @michaelzotzky4378
      @michaelzotzky4378 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Disagree re: Spectra. Personal experience as well as several other owners I know. They are expensive. But they are also very efficient, and the best if you are looking to run off solar panels. Highest output per amp.

    • @FolsomOceanViews
      @FolsomOceanViews  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I think their were proably some issues with our Spectra from before we bought the boat, and we just have no idea what happened with it. The nice thing about the RainMan is that we know its (very short) history and will have a log of what has happened. We just dont have that insight on the spectra. And as you said, there are SO MANY more parts to the spectra. We just got it serviced by two Spectra dealers, and it's still not fully pressurizing/opperating at 100%. I am sure its just something with our unit, but with something as vital as WATER, it's not something you want to mess around with.

    • @michaelzotzky4378
      @michaelzotzky4378 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@FolsomOceanViews Sorry to hear about your Spectra. I read the comments before watching the video. The Seawind owners mostly have either the Spectra, or the Rainman, and both get good reports. We've had our Spectra since new, but it is a smaller 150 VT unit that we took off our previous cat. Only makes 7 gal/hr, but 8 amps. No electronics, and I keep a run log and know its history. We are about to unpickle for the second time, before we head for Bahamas as well. It's 9 years old.
      Oh, and don't you have a TDS meter? We run our Spectra about 5 minutes, test for TDS and it's always good, and then divert to tank. I suspect you ran the Rainman longer because it was first use.

Something I rarely have to do while underway. I would never give up all the joys of sailing for something so trivial!!! You shouldn’t advise people to give up on their dreams!
