How to adjust the timing on a 1.9 VE TDI Injection Pump: On two different engines (ALH & AFN)

  • In this video i'll be going in-depth with how you should time your injection pump to get an awesome all-rounder of an engine.
    Even though I am focusing on the 1.9 TDI engines, this is applicable to other VE TDI engines such as the V6s etc.
    It did turn out to be rather long but hopefully you will not leave with any questions after.

    This video is extremely helpful, I just used it as a guide to adjust the injection timing on my AFN. However, some EU market controllers like to request up to 3 degrees AFTER TDC under low load conditions, so make sure you take that into account when setting the timing and checking the N108 percent value, so the ECU can make that happen, otherwise the start of injection valve will keep hitting the side of the pump and go bad eventually. Thanks a lot anyways!

      Also, make sure you counterhold on the delivery valve (its a 14 head) when cracking the fuel lines loose, because I didn't and for me, the delivery valve cracked loose instead of the fuel line itself and I had to replace its seal because it kept leaking after that.

      How do I know if this is the case?
      I have a AFN engine where I just replaced the injection pump because the pump had problems adjusting timing.
      I got a "00550" code and the hole in the bottom where the N108 is installed, that slot was full of metal shavings..
      Is that a result of something that you are mentioning, or is it just normal wear?
      The car has 380 000km..
      I have just replaced the pump for like a week ago, and adjusted timing yesterday after this guide..
      It was really hard to get the N108 to 4-6% because it changed a little when tightening all the bolts.
      I did settle at 2.8% and kept jumping to about 3-5% sometimes.
      It was either that or 10-15%
      Maybe I could have tried one more time, but I hope it was close enough..

    Your video is the only one I have seen so far that talked about group 004 and the settings there taking duty cycle into consideration.
    Thank you for a very informative tutorial. I appreciate the effort you have put into making the video and the simple terms you use to make it easy to understand.

    Great video but it is only partly useful. It was more helpful if video include injection pump tuning, when pump mounted on engine after injection pump repair, i.e. when you need adjust stroke values acc to the specification. And after that final tuning with VCDS. If you plan to make video about ho to make bosh VE inj pump fully mechanical, it shall be very interesting as well.

    I have an ALH engine and my early 98-99 Bentley manual specifies a Phase I torque for the old adjustment bolts. Then when the timing is set, they say tighten to Phase I torque then an additional 1/4 turn. You didn't mention tightening torque in the video and I don't have recent manual. Is this the same tightening scenario for the new reusable bolts or was it just for the early style bolts?

    Awesome video! I was led here after fitting a new fuel filter... I didn't prime it and introduced air into the system. I think I have finally removed all the air but I think I have damaged my injection pump in the process. When I check basic setting 004 my rpm is fine but the next box says 'early' and fluctuates between 'late' btdc is 1.3 and duty cycle is 94%. Any ideas? Thanks in advance

      UPDATE for anyone suffering similarly. IT WAS THE PUMP. Although it would run on tick-over there was lots of white smoke and it wouldn't rev smoothly or above 2-3krpm. I cracked each injector whilst running and only number one was receiving enough pressure (2, 3, and 4 only had a dribble) So salvaged pump on and we're good. Just need to time it now!

    I have Skoda Octavia 1.9 TDI ALH 2005. I have set the timing and its slightly above the blue line (Fuel temperature-156, Timing -52). The graph says that its slightly advanced. I checked the group 004 and it says duty cycle is 65%. If i advance further to bring the duty cycle to the range 4-6%, it will be more advanced. What could be the issue? The car starts in one crank. I feel engine vibration at idle. I have recently replaced AC pulley, Alternator Pulley & Bearing, Tensioner, Idler, Engine Mount, 4 Injector nozzles. Engine head Faced and valves, stem cells replaced. I have set IQ to 4.2-4.4 mg/str using VCDS & Hammer mod. No error codes. All parameters are within the specified limits

  • @WillThePlank

    I’ve managed to get the TDI timing graph on my ASV to be spot on but the cold start valve still floats around 2.8-3.2 with the IQ value floating between 3.2-3.4.
    Will it being at this value damage anything because the specified and actual timing is only 1.0 degree difference and the car runs incredibly well and his much better fuel economy than when it was retarded.
    Just worrying about damaging the injection pump or the cold start valve.

    Is there a way to ajust the timing just using the 004 metering blocks?? i ask as i've just done a top end rebuild and am a little out of money....... i have the unregestered VCDS so i can see my 004 line duty is about 55% but i can't see the graph. I am tempted to turn the pump slightly anticlockwise and see if it helps or not.

    I have a ALH engine that lost the auxiliary belt. Managed to get it home and replaced the belt and tensioner. The timing belt is fine, but it will not start. Could this solve this?

    • @cactusapesgarage6580
      @cactusapesgarage6580  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hm the auxiliary belt itself wouldn't affect the timing of the engine. I would be concerned for any wiring that may have been damaged from when the belt broke of.

    What if I cannot retard the timing enough by moving the pump? Crack loose the pulley and and rotate it? I don't have access to TDI graph yet - but the duty cycle was 45 and when advancing the pump it went to ~70... BTDC changed by 0.5deg or more.

  • @rkan2
    @rkan2 ปีที่แล้ว

    14:35 - Isn't this the opposite? "Pushing the pump towards the engine advances timing and moves it higher in the timing graph. Pulling the pump towards the radiator retards timing and moves it lower in the timing graph."
