  • The Muscle-Up is the calisthenics skill, that every body weight fitness enthusiast or athlete wants to get. This video is a follow-up to the video I made three years ago, when I was aged 55, and got my first Muscle-Up. That video has now been viewed over 400,000 times on TH-cam, so I thought I should make this follow-up video. I wasn't expecting this video to reach over 1.1 million views in its first 3 months.
    Follow along with this tutorial, and progress through the progressions to get the Muscle-Up.
    I will reply to every comment, so please let me know how you get on and if you find this video useful. I have tried to keep it simple.

      Hey, did I stumble into the old guys club...? I'm closer to 66 than 65, myself, and started on the journey toward muscle ups over the past year. Then I stopped.... probably for various reasons. Partly, I began to look at the risk/reward ratio, and wasn't sure what it'd gain me to get all the way there (other than the satisfaction of achieving a goal, and muscle-up bragging rights). Related to this, I would occasionally experience unfamiliar joint aches -- elbow, mostly, but some shoulder, as well -- that lasted for weeks, even when I dialed back.
      I'm not trying to discourage anyone from pursuing muscle ups. I'm still kind of interested in them, actually. I'm really more wondering if anyone else has done much contemplation and/or research around the usefulness -- and precautions -- regarding this exercise. I'd appreciate hearing your thoughts.

    What a charming and realistic approach to that subject. Being 55 and aiming for some skills in that same direction does help a lot in identifying with what you demonstrated in the video. One an and a half years ago I wasn't even able to maintain a dead hang, not even for a second. People telling, that's just what it means to become old. On new year I came up with my personal challenge, by the end of the year I wanted to be able to maintain a one minute dead hang. With daily routines, every day, it took me 9 month to succeed in it. 👍 But what's more important is that I experienced that my body is reacting, resonating und giving great feedback on the little challenges I ask from it. Plus that 60 seconds challenge was just one indicator, even greater are the side effects of it, other movements are suddenly coming in view and some even in range.

    • @funwithcalisthenics
      @funwithcalisthenics  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    • @sheffsteel7
      @sheffsteel7 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Shoulder injuries are quite common. It's important when doing pull-ups that you use your back and not your arms. So shoulders back and down, then tense your back leaning back slightly, tense your core, then pull up, focussing on using your back. The exercise is much easier and safer and ensures your shoulder is perfectly aligned in its socket. I used to have shoulder inflammation and soreness, so in the short term use a ice pack 4 or 5 times a day, these can be bought off Amazon. Also it helps to build up the muscles in the upper back just behind the shoulder by laying on your front and with your arms out by your side raising very light dumbbells.

    Thank you for your videos.
    I laughed when I saw your first one, because I can relate with your attempts.
    Unlike you, I am now 71 years old, and I am crazy enough to want to do a muscle up!
    I am now doing the simplest and most elementary of rings muscle up and enjoying it.
    But my goal is the bar muscle up. Working at it!
    This video tells me I have to use more bands, because you at 55 years old needed more than the green band!
    No wonder I could only get to pull to a slightly below nipple level with the green band!
    Well, I have learnt a lot from this video instruction. I will try.
    Even if I could not eventually manage a bar muscle up, I am sure I will still be stronger!

    Being able to do 15 clean pull-ups is definitely key to doing this but there's also about 5-6 other exercises you should be practicing to get all the required muscles strengthened for a better muscle up. Great video 👍🏼

    Hi Antony, I am 51 and started with strength training only 2 years ago. Just before my 49th birthday I've got a pull-up bar and started with the green band. Now I am able to do about 14 pull-ups without band and I am very commited to learn the muscle up now. You are a real inspiration. I found your video by coincidence and I also like your other videos. So I subscribed. It's amazing what's possible still in the fifties. When did you start with strength training/calisthenics? I am looking forward to see more videos from you. Keep going!! Best regards from Germany.

    • @funwithcalisthenics

      Hi, thanks so much for subscribing. If you can do 14 pull-ups you are probably able to do a muscle up soon! Yes it is amazing what we can do even over 50. Exciting for us. I started strength training about 5 years ago, just doing push-ups.. until I managed 100 in one set. Although the form wasn’t too good. More videos to come. 👍💪😊

    Great tutorial. Only tried once to do the muscleup and it just seemed so far out of reach. Almost at 20 pull ups but will try going back to trying the muscle up using bands. Cheers and great motivational video for us guys at the older end of the spectrum.

    • @funwithcalisthenics
      @funwithcalisthenics  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      We certainly are at the wrong end of the spectrum! But can still show the youngsters how it’s done.. 20 pull-ups is really good, I bet you can do a muscle up with the bands. Go on, you know you can.
