    Thanks for the review. Don’t remember if you mentioned the DLC Dark version or that they’re great to combo because the irons are very similar. I’m playing a combo with the t’s and the p’s with the break at the 8 iron. To me it’s the best of both worlds, getting speed and forgiveness of a hallow iron with true forged feel. They going to be in the bag for a very long time!

      Nothing wrong with that. I love my Gen 3s & not so sure about the two-tone look of these new ones. Might go to the polar opposite aesthetic with Mizuno 225s. Lots of good choices these days. If only Titleist would publicly release Cam Smith's black T100s! Those would be sweet. Maybe later this year.

    I think there’s clearly a market for PXG, however when you look at the numbers, they simply don’t equate to 2-3 times the price of other brands.
    I think they are planning to lower their price point to matchup with the competition based on the recent price drops. Why would anyone pay 400 per for these? 200 per club seems more realistic.

    • @mcnillerandsons7906
      @mcnillerandsons7906 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Agreed. It seems the market is veterans and police because they get the price the public gets two years later at release. As a vet myself I’d rather see the general public get that price as well to increase brand awareness and reach. They are great clubs but you make a valid point on how much is too much.

    Many players like myself need forgiveness but it seems having pros hit the club doesn't help me decide. Could you put a circle sticker about an inch in size on the sweet spot and then hit the clubs outside that sticker and see how they do. Then each club you test you could do 20 shots outside the circle and see how they perform. Thanks.

    I’m not downing the gen 5 but I had a set 4-g irons and I couldn’t get the distance out of them and I ended up trying out a set of Cleveland zipcore and I gained 30+ yards on my clubs. Same club speed and hitting the “sweet spot” for both clubs. I guess it’s true when they say every golfer is different with preference. I do admit tho. The dark horse looks very amazing while playing with them.

    Great video. What about a used set of Gen5 plus a fitting? Can get a set for $900. Still over $100 an iron but probably half of a new set. Your thoughts on used clubs with the shafts I currently use. Is it worth it if I have to include a fitting?

  • @theCycleReport
    @theCycleReport ปีที่แล้ว

    I went in to PXG a couple months ago for a fitting, and told them straight out I wasn't interested in gen5 - I'd not pay for them.
    BUT, at the time they were still doing fittings for gen3 and gen4 at equal or less price per club than the 0211 even - so ultimately I ended up buying a set of Gen 3 T irons made for me (i preferred them to the gen4) and got my brand new "old" clubs for less than 25% of the original msrp. Crazy cheap.
    I love the clubs, and while I agree they don't really do anything that other top of the line offerings don't - for less than a set of cast game improvement clubs I am absolutely ecstatic with what I got for not having to have the latest/greatest.
    The brand as a whole is odd - what I really like about PXG (aside from their closeout pricing) is that most brands don't offer their top tier construction/materials but you can get game improvement irons from PXG that are 5x forged, etc. Most other brands you have to buy more players' irons to get the best quality stuff. I wasn't interested in the XP line, but all the quality/tech/etc in my T model clubs is there in the XP - right down to the terrific feel. That's rare in competitors.

    Surely PXG being primarily a direct to consumer brand (via their fitting bias) are doing only what other brands do; when they bring out a new club they drop their prices for the prior iteration. I don’t think they drop then raise their price for the same club as you suggest. As for the launch price of the Gen5’s is it that much more expensive for a 7 club set as any other fully Forged head at launch?

    • @MichaelNewtonGolf
      @MichaelNewtonGolf  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      They did for the 0211 range……was launched and a few weeks later dropped in price….and then again. Currently the driver is about £125 cheaper than when it first launched and it’s still current product.

    You’re spot on Mike with PXG’s pricing policy. I bought the Gen 3 Irons on release after a custom fit and paid £400.00 per club. Within 11 months they brought out the Gen 4 at £249.00 per. Obviously the Gen 3’s plummeted in value and despite my efforts to make my feelings known to the fitter and UK MD, NOBODY replied. Shameful business ethics. Would give up golf before ever buying PXG again..!

    I just got fitted and purchased an 8-piece set of GEN 3s for a little over $1000. The were 70% off of original price of $425 per club. They’re awesome, but certainly not worth $3400 for 8 clubs, which is what a lot of folks paid when they first came out. I hear more good stuff about the GEN 3 than any of the other generations.

      Gen4 was too soft. They made Gen5 slightly firmer. I went with a combo p & t with a break at the 8. I weakened the loft of the 5 to 7 1 degree. Helped retain height and spin. Best I’ve owned.

    I agree with you on the pricing (just silly, really) but have to disagree with you on the looks (I personally find them to be hideous with all the bolts & screws all over). Throw in Mr. Parson’s grating voice and commercials, and I’m fairly certain I’ll never own a PXG product.

  • @MichaelM-to4sg
    @MichaelM-to4sg 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Excuse me, did you say you’re hitting 7-iron? They’re lofted 27-30* do they even offer a 3 or 4 iron? Would you carry 5, maybe 6 wedges? The 27 is stronger than my 5 iron and that “players” 30* right between my 5 & 6.
    At my lofts, 9-iron is 44, I carry 4 wedges; 48, 52, 56, 60. At that 7-iron loft, 9-iron 36-40? That has to be the stupidest set design I’ve ever heard of.

    • @kourt2469
      @kourt2469 ปีที่แล้ว

      Why play wedges with 4 degree gaps? Most pros don't even bunch them up that close. I swing my pw 90 mph and with 4 degree gaps still only have 10-12 yard gaps. Most would be better off with 5 degree gaps because at average swing speeds you'd be about 10-12 yard gaps

    • @MichaelM-to4sg
      @MichaelM-to4sg ปีที่แล้ว

      @@kourt2469 8-PW are my scoring clubs. If I’m 160-125 in fairway, unless it’s a really difficult pin location, I’m expecting to be looking at a makeable putt.
      I do not always carry 4 wedges, I actually have 6 wedges. The 48 is a fixture, it pairs ideally w/44* 9-iron which I consistently hit 145-148. I hit the 48 132-135 on full swing. I never use any Wedge for full swing except the 48* and on very rare occasions the 60 on a tight lie to a very firm and fast green.
      In the 4-wedge makeup my 48* is 8* bounce, 52/11, 56/15, 60/6. I use this on my 2 “normal courses” which are mostly deep and very fine sand, longish rye fringe and tight fairways. The high bounce 56 is ideal for the sand and the 52 or 56 best suited to fluffy lie fringe. I only carry the 60 for tight fairway shots from 50-60 yds, which honestly are rare.
      On the occasion I play wet and/or course heavy sand I commonly carry 3 wedges; 48/8, 53/9, 59/7.
      I don’t replace irons, or woods often. I know what works for me, as long as it can achieve my desired launch window with each, no need for change. I however change wedges annually, usually due to groove wear or possibly aesthetics or feel. I too often change putters. Putter, wedges and short irons are what defines my scoring. I try to always have the best tool suited for the job and that means confidently knowing the exact carry distances on my wedges within tightest window possible.

    I understand the gen 5 is injected molded where as previously it was a pre-formed material.
    I could see cost savings in ejection I'm curious how do they make sure there is no voids and or deflection or re-flection on the face. What I would love to see is someone to cut open all gens of PXG hollow body irons and examine the magic material used and their weight and compression qualities. I do own the gen 3 0311 XP and do love them! I love your channel also! So professional and classy.

      T Gen 5 significantly more forgiving than Gen 3? I'm playing Gen 3 5-6 P + 7-W T. Considering full set of Ps to get some more forgiveness but if the new ones are more forgiving then maybe I'll stick with the same makeup.
      The numbers on the review were screwy - he should've taken out at least that one pull-hook with the P, which read around 3500rpm and skewed all the numbers.
