Glad to see you reviewing another Joan Crawford movie! You’ve single-handedly turned me into a Joan fanatic, so thank you so much for spreading your contagious passion for classic Hollywood to new generations of fans! And I get such a kick out of your Joan and Bette impressions. Spot on! We love you, Steve! 🙂
@Maurice Savard One rainy evening I decided to curl up with an "Old Hollywood Classic" selecting Joan Crawford in "Mildred Pierce". Since that evening the dishes have piled, laundry heaped, and text and calls go unanswered. Mail is falling from an overstuffed mailbox and food is delivered as I am mesmerized by movie bliss found in the shadows of film noir black and white! I have had to make a contract with myself to shower daily tearing myself away from what Ms Crawford might do next! (Thank Goodness I am retired). As I tell myself " Just one more", I have a dread of first responders pounding on my door carrying out a "well check" requested by my worried friends and family. Joan Crawford was really amazing here. If she hadn't got her only Oscar two years before ("Mildred Pierce"), would have won for "Possessed", very deservedly.
@@STEVEHAYESTOQ Yeah!! Why not?? Crawford was not only a dazzling movie star but also an excellent actress. You should review "The snake pit", released one year later, and again with a mentally ill woman in the leading role. It was a succesful 20th Century Fox production, directed by Anatole Litvak and wonderfully played by Olivia de Havilland. Thanks for your video. Many of us really were really missing you all this time.

@@manuelsoroadecarlos8641 "The Snake Pit" is on my "To Do" list and it still packs a very powerful punch. I still think Olivia should have won her second Oscar for it. Happy Summer and once again, many thanks! Steve
@@slc2466 Sorry but I must disagree... Loretta Young was not as accomplished dramatic actress as her four rivals (Joan Crawford in this movie, Susan Hayward, Dorothy Mc Guire and specially Rosalind Russell) but gave in "The farmer's daughter" (also in "The bishop's wife", released the same year) such a charming, performance... Very professional too as playing a comedy is never easy. It had to be a hard choice but not an unfair triumph for the lovely Miss Young.
I love "Possessed". Joan was a dynamite actress. A lot of people get caught up in that obsession thing over someone and she played it beautifully. It was interesting to see the 1940's take on that. Thanks for the video, Steve! I always look forward to them.
Yes, you know when she says ""I love you" is such an inadequate way of saying I love you" she's in trouble, especially with the cold-hearted bastard Heflin plays- love stinks with him, for sure. Joan does a great job letting go of her signature toughness to show the fragile, unbalanced nature of her character.
@@slc2466 Absolutely! I have known a couple of women that truly were broken over their breakups. Not exactly to the point of Joan's character, but the "breakup" affected them for years afterward. In both cases, the guy was very close to Van's character, cold and detached. This just got me to thinking about "Fatal Attraction". I just watched a Vanity Fair interview with Glenn Close last night on TH-cam. If FA was made today, she would want to see the back story of Alex's character and what made her do what she did. There's a comparison, Joan vs. Glenn's characters. Mmm? Have a great day, sic2466!
@@vintagegal541 I think it's also a telling tale of obsession and where it can lead. Movies like this, one, "Vertigo", "Madame Bovary", "The Paradine Case" and of course later, "Fatal Atrraction", "Play Misty For Me" , "Damage" with Jeremy Irons and Brian DePalma's "Obsession", among others, all deal with the fact that obsession takes no prisoners, can completely take over a life and often lead to a tragic end for all concerned. I've gone through a few in my lifetime , for one reason or another, and find films on the subject so fascinating. Probably why "Vertigo" is my favorite movie. Thanks for watching and for your insight! Best Wishes; Steve
@@STEVEHAYESTOQ Hi Steve, I've seen all of those, "Fatal Attraction" and "Vertigo" many times. The end scene in "Damage" where Jeremy had a photo of Juliette cover the entire wall was very haunting to me. Glenn Close said of her character, Alex, she wasn't a villain, but that's how audiences saw her. Her mental health was very delicate. These films are so interesting. Thanks for being candid about your situations. I've been thru a couple of very hard breakups that were painful myself. I choose single and happy! My best to you too, Steve!
It's always a good day when you get a message that there's a new movie review from TOQ! We don't get to see you enough. This looks like a humdinger! Will have to find a copy or place to see it. As always, thanks for keeping classics alive, and reminding us how good (and fun) these gems are! : )
This film is a gripping psychological melodrama, and Joan is outstanding. It's the sort of movie where you truly do not know what to expect next when it really begins building its feeling of tension. I do enjoy a character study where the protagonist is revealed to be dangerously unhinged; call me crazy ((insert icy Joan expression here, LOL)). And I love the impressive set they built for the house by the water; at first glance it looked like a location shoot. Thanks, Steve. Hope you have a super and sunny springtime!
I think the production on this is terrific. Agree with you about the house by the lake. They even motor across the lake!Very atmospherice and one of her best! Thanks for watching! Happy Summer to you too! Steve
This is one no Crawford fan should miss, from the peak of her career. She could do these big melodramas like no other. Your reviews are enhanced by your doing the dialog in character. No one else I've seen does this.
@@STEVEHAYESTOQ I know (at the least) you must have a very special "I Want to Live!" tribute planned at some point- talk about a perfect role for a tough Brooklyn gal. Can't wait to hear you as Susie in the slammer- "Provocative?!? There's nothing but dames in here!," for example.
Love Joan Crawford! Possessed is a very interesting twist on film noir as Van plays the "homme fatal" versus the average femme fatale. Such an engaging film. 💗💗
Ohhh I remember watching this as a kid one Saturday afternoon - I was glued to the screen - it was my first vision into such antics! I have never looked back :)
Thsi was my first Joan Crawford movie as a kid. I was frightened by her and yet felt sorry for her at the end...which didn't mean I wanted to get all that close. LOL! Steve
@@STEVEHAYESTOQ oh I know what you mean!!! LOL. so I had seen her in the Night Gallery episode, so this was probably the 2nd thing I saw her in, and I was impressed how young she was - I remember thinking - wow she is a good actress, to get to do both of these rolls LOL. so naive!
@@SleepyLestatSF You should check out her '30's films, like "Grand Hotel" The Shining Hour", "Dancing Lady"" and the 30's version of "Possessed" ( With Gable but a different plot) you will be dumbfounded at how absolutely gorgeous she was. Simply stunning! Crawford changed her image no less than six times and , as a result, had so many fascinating phases of her career and was consistantly amazing. I prefer her film noir work after "Mildred Pierce", especially "Sudden Fear", but there is alot to choose from. Also, see " A Woman'S Face" 9'42), one of the last sumptuous MGM vehicles before she left for Warners. When she had a director like George Cukor, whom she iodlized and who respected her, she was inspired and rose to the occasion brilliantly. I love turning people onto the wonders of Crawford. Enjoy! @@SleepyLestatSF A few others that are worth checking out are; " A Woman's Face" (42) nice MGM vehicle. Lots of glam and Joan doing a remarkable job. " Daisy Kenyon" ('47) - a rare 'woman's picture like the ones she did in the '30's. She's relatively "normal" and having to choose between gorgeous Henry Fonda or Sexy Dana Andrews. She is subtle, natural and very appealing. "Harriet Craig"- Full stop "Mommie Dearest" Bitch mode and simply terrific and "Flamingo Road "and "The Damned Don't Cry", two of her very best Warners Film Noirs. Great casts and Joan tough as nails. Viva Joan Festivals!!! Steve
Hi Steve, Another stunning review of a terrific Joan Crawford film! Her screams of “David” should have won her a second Oscar for that performance! Nothing like a woman scorned! X
Thank you for another terrific review of one of my favorite actresses. I'm sure you know in 1931 she made a film for MGM with the same title starring with Clark Gable. I dont think I've ever seen her look more beautiful, and it's a very good film (though the same title, a completely different story) Watch it. Michael - South Africa.
I've seen it and agree, she is gorgeous in it. Of course she was always happy when she was working with Gable. Thanks for watching and greeting to you and everyone in South Africa! I'm delighted! Steve

Steve wonderful review...was also wonderful to see Joan w/o makeup or at least very toned down...I could almost hear Joan say if Bette can do w/o so can I! Now you have me curious to watch the 1931 version with the King of Hollywood. xoxo
I was a 10 year old kid when Strait Jacket came out! Scared the do-do out of me. For years I slept with the sheets and bedspread tucked around my neck as I had nightmares about her coming in to my bedroom at night! Guess what I really wanted was her cheating husband Lee Majors who she did in at the start of the film.
Thanks, Steve! What a disturbing movie. Worst part is the Van Heflin character is like should be called Van Teflon because while she’s pulling her hair, wringing her hands, gnashing her teeth, eating her heart out over him, he’s like, “sorry, babe, that’s not how I roll. But mind if marry your step-daughter who’s half your age?” That’s grounds for justifiable homicide…
Exactly, which is why it was created in the first place. I think I'd go for the Claude Rains recommendation from "Now, Voyager" and the penalty for "Justifiable Homcide" should be a few restful weeks as "Cascade". Thanks, as always! Steve
4:29 Meryl who? .... Steve, fabulous as always! Loved this movie, one of Crawford's best performances. Very well directed, with the lighting and camerawork being especially outstanding. So glad you finally did this film.
Yes, the atmosphere is amazing and really builds the tension, esecially when she enters the house in the dark and hears the dead woman's bell ringing...or does she? Fabulous! Happy Summer! Steve
I've waited a long time for you to review this Joan Crawford masterpiece; it's certainly among her best work. I've always enjoyed your film reviews, Steve; they're a treat. The 1947 version of "Possessed" was indeed a classic. The way Joan slowly went insane showed how well she researched the role. 0:21 🌟. “ That face That face That wonderful ( fabulous ) face ! It shines It glows all over the place And how I love to watch it Change expressions… ❣️”.
This is a terrific film. The beginning with Crawford wandering the streets without makeup and glamor is a statement in itself - that she felt comfortable enough in herself and in this part that she could look 'non-Joan Crawford.' That she was willing to make herself look plain, disconnected, and lost (i.e., in a way that audiences had not seen her before).
Automatic smile when your notification came up😁👏🏻 Your Joan & Bette are a treat! “Possessed” is almost like “Mildred Pierce” on steroids, with Miss Crawford in tiptop schizophrenic shape. Great synopsis of this Joan classic! Honestly though, I always thought that if this movie were in real life Joan would’ve eaten Van Heflin for breakfast, lunch AND dinner (he always struck me as kind of dweeby, imo). Looking forward to your next gem❤️
Yes, she was a strong presence and as she got older it was more and more difficult to find leading men to match her. Never the Less, you can't take your eyes off her.
Just watched Possessed for the first time and I really enjoyed it. Love a good melodrama and I have become a big Joan Crawford fan, thanks to you Steve!
I might go with "Humoresque" for my favorite Crawford performance, as she's so beautiful, stylish and dramatically compelling in it and even puts over some world-weary, sly humor, but in terms of stepping outside her image she probably pushed herself hardest in "Possessed," going as deep emotionally as I think she ever did on-screen to really get into a character. If she hadn't already won for "Mildred Pierce," the Academy might have given her the prize for this one.
@@markr.devereux3385 Yep, A-1 production all around, with the stars at their peak. The picture's involving enough with just Garfield, but then Crawford shows up and sends it to an entirely different level.
@@markr.devereux3385 She didn't get enough really great, romantic, leading men as she got older. I alway liked the older woman /younger leading man pairing in 'Humoresque". Really worked.

I love Possessed! Somewhere I read that Bette Davis, upon hearing that Joan Crawford was making this movie, quipped that “for once we have an example of perfect casting!”
Well, that certainly sounds like "our Bette". I think Joan dd a magnificent job with a very difficult character. You can't take you eyes of her for a minute and she makes you wince with pathos over her predicaments. As the old song once said: " Unrequited love's a bore." Best; Steve
Geraldine Brooks was so pretty. Apparently she and Joan remained friends after this movie, that surprised me, I don't know why. Maybe I can't imagine Joan being nice to someone younger and so attractive. Ms Brooks was only 51 when she died. That's sad.

I’ve seen Possessed almost as many times as Mildred Pierce. Joan Crawford was more than just a movie star, and this proves it. Put that in your pipe, Bette, and smoke it! I’m not really too familiar with Geraldine Brooks. The only other film I’ve ever seen her in was The Reckless Moment, with Joan Bennett. She’s not bad in it, but clearly older than the character she was playing.
Joan and Geraldine Brooks became life long friends from working together in "Possessed". Brooks spoke at Joan's memorial service, before passing away herself just 5 weeks later.
That's thanks to my gifted cinematographer/editor/ buddy THOMAS MEACHAM. A genius! I'm so lucky! Thanks for the compliment, I'll be sure to pass it on! Best; Steve

When I was a youngster, my friend's dad owned a second rate movie theater. Every Saturday we would drive to work with him and spend the entire day watching B flick double features.. They ran consecutively all day. Westerns, gangster films, women's prison movies. Eight, nine, ten years old. They poisoned my mind and twisted my idea of what life was like and how normal people behaved. Films like Possessed ,Strait-Jacket and Berserk that show extreme behavior and reactions might be fun for adults. But keep them away from children.

I'm so glad! Thanks for watching! Best Wishes; Steve
One of Crawford’s best performances of her storied career.
Undoubtedly. Steve

Steve

@@marccollins1966 Love it!
Yup. She puts on those plots like an old mink and strides through the pictures with ease. Steve
But mind if marry your step-daughter who’s half your age?”
That’s grounds for justifiable homicide…
Exactly, which is why it was created in the first place. I think I'd go for the Claude Rains recommendation from "Now, Voyager" and the penalty for "Justifiable Homcide" should be a few restful weeks as "Cascade". Thanks, as always! Steve

I've waited a long time for you to review this Joan Crawford masterpiece; it's certainly among her best work. I've always enjoyed your film reviews, Steve; they're a treat.
She always maintained it was the most difficult role of her career. She phenominal.
We need more Joan on TOQATM
Well, don't dispair, there's still quite a few to choose from. Thanks! Steve
quite a lot of men were mean to Joan in her movies.have you done Sudden Fear?

I always was impressed with HUMORESQUE as a powerful picture teaming her up with John Garfield was gold.
@@markr.devereux3385 Yep, A-1 production all around, with the stars at their peak. The picture's involving enough with just Garfield, but then Crawford shows up and sends it to an entirely different level.

Great choice!
Hooray! So glad you like it! Steve
Geraldine Brooks has the BEST movie fall in this movie ever! If you've seen this a few times, you know what I'm talking about. I also love Joan's smirk during a scene with Heflin! Love this movie.
And to think , my mother used to threaten to "Go after me with the hairbrush". Joan brings it to the utmost level. LOL!
@@STEVEHAYESTOQ You (and John) always keep that smile on my face! 🤣
@@marymitchell8625 Awwwww, Mary. Thanks. You made our day! Best; Steve & Johnny
I was frightened of "Rodan", "Mothra" and "Godzilla". LOL! Thanks for watching! Steve
I love "possessed" & "the damned don't cry".
Me too and I'd add " Flamingo Road" to the two. Love her and Sydney Greenstreet in a showdown! Such Film Noir fun!
