I made a complicated SIMPLE TOY with DIY injection molding.

  • It is possible to make injection molds using a resin mix. I don't like using 3D printed molds directly, for reasons of weaknicity and brittleness. (This may change when that Siraya Sculpt resin comes in.)
**** BLACK FRAME glitch at around 16:19 due to render error. Was not able to re-render and re-upload in time for a Sunday release. ****
I make videos every week, thanks to direct support.

Hey Uncle Jessy! Mannn, I think it is possible, but not with the standard resins. I'm pretty excited to try the Siraya Sculpt!
Also, the size of the details make a difference. My resin molds break easily at those little peg areas, but if you're molding a more organic or smooth object, with larger details, I bet you could get several shots out of it. And embedding it in a metal frame should take it even further. Thank you for watching!

One reason why parts of the mold also pulled out when you injection molded straight into it is because you have no draft angles on your model. With drafts you'll get much better results, but the mold is still not likely to hold up to all too many pulls either way.
[edit] of course you mentioned that already 😄

    • @evilcanofdrpepper
      @evilcanofdrpepper 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Here is something that both you (Switch & Lever) and TheCrafsMan might want to look into Microwaveable soft plastics that are usually used for bait making. I know it's still pretty expensive however TheCrafsMan might already have many of the things needed for this. Also I think he could just use a standard high temp silicon mold and just pour it in using a glass measuring cup straight out of the microwave. This is a youtube called Marling Baits that tends to use a lot of similar techniques to carve baits. It seems like you all have your own little tricks and secrets that have built up over the years that are specific to what you are trying to do however you might be able to solve each others problems. He has his aluminum molds made by Epic Bait Molds and uses a large hand held injector so it might be worth looking into.

Those little peg areas that pulled out might have held up better with draft angles, but I wonder how small an angle we can get away with and still have the hoses attach firmly. If it comes out of the mold easier, I reckon the hose would pull away easier too. I might coulda went on the low end with a little 3-degree angle. That may have been a good compromise.

I’ve got something I’ve been wanting to make a proper mold of and always thought 3D printing it would be the perfect way, because the mold won’t flex. Good job.

Crafsman, one thing you can do to help with longevity for the resin molds is designing a slot to add a metal washer at the injection point. Have a great day!

I love the step for removing the silica packet. Made me chuckle.

That was 100% for real just in there. I sorta noticed this lumpy part, and thought something had clumped together (the aluminum powder in the resin), but then noticed it had a rectangular definition to it. LOL!

Hey crafsman - we need some sticker sheets of your cool concepts. They'd be cheap to mail and I'd certainly love one or two of 'em on my laptop. Keep on being the great inspirator you always are.

I like the look of this A-mod character idea with interchangeable face, etc. I would want it to come with the matching magnifying lens piece and a couple of example faces - most importantly the anime eye ball. So glad to see you survived the project, was worried about you since last Sunday LOL. peace and love.

CrafsMan... I’m not sure how to tell you this but... one of the only times I don’t feel dead inside is while I’m watching your show. (I’m serious!)
    Thanks CrafsMan!

That little lense over the face was neat. I learned something today. I had not heard 3D Print Resin caused silifone inhibition. Good 2 Kno. Thank you again CrafsMan. Keep on Steady Filmin. We love ya.

Always a highlight when you upload! You have such a marvellous brain, I wouldn't think to make all the neat little changes and adjustments that you do, I'm always so impressed with how many good ideas you have.

Hey Crafsman! I fought surface bubbles with toothpicks and my fingers for years. One day I said...look here...let me try this lil ole cheapy kids paint brush from the dollar tree. I now paint details on with silicone and resins each time on tough little elements and I'll never go back! I get 12 for a dollar at dollar tree. Just a friendly tip for the most amazing fella on youtube!
