Casting Silicone into Silicone - Can You do it?

- We are casting silicone into silicone. Can we do it? I'm going to show you how to do this with success. Silicone will stick to silicone unless you use a mold release agent. Mold release spray works well for making silicone not stick to silicone. I was nervous the first time I tried it, but I'm not intimidated anymore. I have been making silicone molds for a while now, but I was pouring into hdpe plastic forms. Not anymore. :)

Interesting. I would never of thought you could use the silicone molds to make more molds but it makes sense (as long as you use the mold release)
Lol Don’t forget the release.. I tell myself that every time lol
Pretty damn cool Jake 👍🏼
Thanks for always sharing some great knowledge!
Thanks Jonathan!! Glad you enjoyed!👍👍
Love your workspace!!! Just Beautifully lit, and super clean. Great content!!!
Thank you Lance!👍👍👊
That's flat out brilliant!! Great idea and awesome tutorial brother!! 👊
Thanks Brother!!
someone should do a kickstarter to make affordable platinum-cure silicone rubber. the prices seem too high
You are telling me.. Silicone is very expensive .
platinum is expensive no way around it. it's like you're asking for cheap gold jewellery. it will just be fake and worse quality
Hey, that was super cool to see the process Jake! I think that’s a great way to save you time and materials. 🔥💚
Thank you for watching Jenn. I’m pretty happy with how it works. 👍👍
Awesome instructional video Jake!!!!
Thanks Buddy!! 👍👍
That is cool. Great video Jake
Thanks John. 😁😁
Looking forward to giving this a try once all of my supplies arrive.
You got this William!! 👍👍
Excellent video. Thanks for sharing your skill and knowledge.
Very welcome Rod. Thank you for watching. Glad you enjoyed 👍
Great Video Jake! I really like this one. I love the new concept molds and I spied a few other things that I will message you in private about just incase we weren't meant to see em. LOL. I love the new Hat mic its very clever. Love the look. Wish I could be there with ya learning along side you. Great video keep it up! Cant wait for the live show. Great job as always.
There was some things that I’m not talking about yet.. but I’m not going to let that stop me from putting out videos.. have to balance it lol
That's really cool! I've wanted to do that for awhile but have been scared to. I have custom molds I've made of sculpture I created. I want to get a silicone cast of them from the silicone molds. Going to give this a try really soon. Thanks for sharing. Heidi
Awesome.. I was scared the first time for sure.. now I just make sure I don’t forget to spray the mold release lol
Great Process 👍🏻
Thank you Connie Connie Connie Connie
Nice work Jake! They look great!!

Bolt and more bolts...lol looking good jake
But you ain’t got no bolts Lt. Dan
Hello Jake,
I love all your videos, you are so down to earth and provide so much valuable information for people who want to learn. My question is do you have a video or have suggestions on how to create round molds and molds with lips inside. I want to make them but not sure how to. Thank you.
Thank you .. I’m glad you enjoy the videos.. I appreciate it.. you can find the thing you want to make duplicates of or you can make your own.. I have a mold making for beginners video that’s ok I think.. you just have to make the opposite of what you want the silicone to be. th-cam.com/video/6IV8cvGretc/w-d-xo.html
Thank you for Watching the video.. Check out my silicone molds HERE www.northsidecustomcrafts.com/new-products/silicone-molds
Very nice video !!
I have a question, how can I make a mold of polycarbonate mold for chocolate, if I want to add epoxy resine ? I tried one time, and it’s « stick » together, impossible to separate them.
Thank you and continue what you do, it help a lot!
I’m glad you enjoy the videos.. I’ve never done a polycarbonate mold so I’m not sure. But there’s mold release that is used on plastic.. there’s a link to the stoner mold release on the description of the video. 👍
@@JakeThompson Thank you, I will check it !
Nice video! I’m trying to make some cupcake molds, but I didn’t see how you removed the excess silicone from the inside of the new silicone mold. Are you cutting it out with a special tool? Or have you made a silicone mold of your og casting to save time and materials?
When I use the plastic molds I would get excess flashing off with a razor blade… or even the small flashing would rub off with my finger.. once I had a mold that looked perfect.. I used it to make a silicone form.. when I use the new mold.. they come out with no flashing
I use the Stoner brand mold release, will that work when pouring silicone to silicone?
I’ve never tried it.. I use the kind that says it’s for silicone 😃
@@JakeThompson duly noted 📝
Thank you 💚
@@JakeThompson did you notice how I used my searchbar there??? 🤔😂
JAKE GREAT JOB WITH THE SILICONE MOLD.THAY LOOK LIKE THAY WILL WORK GREAT .FROM DOUG
Awesome!! Thanks Doug
Hi and thanks for the vid, informative and enjoyable. My question is can you use any brand of silicon mould release? most of them seem to be talking about resin casting as opposed to silicon to silicon. I'm looking at one called Everbuild all purpose silicon spray, and Molyslip MSS Silicone Spray General Purpose, do you think either one of them, or for that matter any silicon spray release would do the job. Thanks in advance for any advice you can offer.
Thank you for watching the video.. I’m glad you enjoyed… I’m not familiar with either one of those sprays.. but a rule of thumb I go by is.. it needs to say silicone to silicone release.. The one I’m using now is from alumilite, it’s called Pol-Ease 2500
Thanks for the reply Jake and the advice, at least now I have an idea what I'm looking for lol.
Would this Silicone work as a insert into a wooden fly fishing box to hold fly's. Over time will the molded inserts shrink or get hard? Excellent Video.
Thank you very much.. I’ve had the molds I’ve made for a couple years now with 100’s of resin pours in them. With no change at all. I don’t expect my molds to last forever with what I do with them. If they aren’t going through heat cycles and chemical reactions.. I’m sure there would be no problem.
@@JakeThompson Thank You. I have a small CNC to cut the mold from something like you are using. I love the AIR Blow to release the Silicone. I will be using that. Thanks for that tip. I have a bunch of your videos to watch.
That was so satisfying to watch. I wonder if those housing boxes can be punched?
Thank you.. not quite sure what you mean?
@@JakeThompson lol auto correct... punched was supposed to be purchased. lol
@@jayelleart lol I don’t sell the forms but I do sell the molds
@@JakeThompson ok, thanks for your responses. I'm in Canada so shipping would be pretty expensive
Great video! This might be a dumb question, but does mold release affect the final product at all? Like if you were casting a smooth object, would it have a orange peel or liquid effect?
As far as I can tell it doesn’t.. I’m sure if you really put it on thick it might.
Would this work with Platinum Silicon Rubber?
This is what I used in this video Plat 25 Silicone www.alumilite.com/silicones/plat-25-silicone-rubber/?oid=3&affid=29
Can you use a silicone solid stir stick to mix a silicone A and B liquid
Yes, but make sure you clean it right after because silicone sticks to silicone.
Can you mold silicone together in a 3 step mold to mold a magnet inside solid silicone? if you dont use mold release on the surfaces you wanna fuse?
Right off hand.. I don’t see why not.
Perfect! Any silicone you can recommend? i need something around Shore 15A - 25A, and as described something that can fuse together.
@@ThorMOG I use Alumilite plat 25 on everything I do.. should be a link and a discount code in the description
I need to make 50 silicone gaskets 6/7"×3/16" what is the best way to do multiple things like this? Can you give me some advice?
You can make a negative out of plastic, 3D print.. wood… use mold release. Just make the form as nice as you can so the gasket will come out smooth.
@JakeThompson OK, thanks . I think I will try to build a wood type frame. Thanks. I will let you know if it works .
Hey Jake. On a personal preference, I like the videos that are shorter, like this one. The hour ones are too long for me to watch.
Right on Stephen.. just look for the shorter edited videos.. I’m still going to make them.. but they also take several days for me to make and edit.. The live shows are more for a hangout and a good time. 👍👍
Whats the difference between the UMR and the STONER mold release?
My understanding (and I could be wrong) is that stoner is for use on plastic and UMR is used on silicones
Probably a dumb question, I’ve just started researching silicone molds. But can you deep pour this stuff, or will it cook off like epoxy if you go past a recommended depth?
I’m wanting to make a rectangular mold that’s 4’ tall and 6” square, with an inner dimension of 5” square. Is that even possible?
I use alumilite clear slow with a pressure pot.. It will work fine.
I have a silicone manifold in a 40yr old machine to repair/replace. I can see how to get there, thanks.
I don't have the tools to degas...can I just carefully stir?
If you will be putting your molds in a pressure pot when you cast resin in them.. you should degas. If it’s not going in a pressure pot you can stir slowly and pour slowly from a good height.
You will probably struggle to stir thoroughly enough without capturing air. Jake's right about pouring slowly from a heigh - that can get out most all air bubbles. You need to pour a stream thin enough that bubles flowing into it are exposed at both sides - and pop!
Heating the mold gently in an oven beforehand can help, too.
And, taking a tip from the concrete industry, so can vibrating the mold after you've poured the silicon into it, to help dislodge any surface bubbles.
Crazy coincidence I just cut up an old mold yesterday to use as filler for a new mold I was making but didn't have enough silicone for.
I save every bit of extra or scrap silicone.. comes in handy 👍👍😁😁
What is the silicone hardness u have used for these?
It’s plat25 from Alumilite
do you need specific spray for different silicones
Not for different silicones.. it should just say for silicone to silicone on the can .
@@JakeThompson thank you
I was wondering if you could even pour silicone onto silicone! Now I know .. 👍
I’m sure happy that I could help you out!! :)
can we use DW40?
I’m sure it wouldn’t play well with the silicone but I don’t know for sure.. I use the mold release I showed 👍
Do you know if I can pour this silicone over a polyurethane rubber item, I'm scared it may stick?
I’ve only used on this silicone.. if I needed to do it. I would try it on a small piece first so I wouldn’t waste it.. sorry I couldn’t be more help.
I mean will it work and not stick together? It's a polyurethane rubber emblem I want to pour the silicone over?
@@patrickkavanagh7371 I mean, I think that if you use mold release. It should work.. but I haven’t casted on something like that, so I can’t promise you it will work.
@@JakeThompsonok thank you for the quick reply. Go Pack!
What are you gonna do with the finished product?
I sell them Here www.northsidecustomcrafts.com/new-products
can you cast resin on resin? and how?
Yes , same thing as this. Use mold release.. I’ve haven’t done it yet.
Not nearly so easy, because resin casts are hard and inflexible when you're separating the mold from the cast. They'll simply lock physically together.
where can we buy some of your mold ?
I’m not ready to sell the ones in this video but when I am.. I will make an announcement on here, Instagram, and Facebook
What’s the spray called 13:38
Here ya go th-cam.com/video/xFGx55dMQ2Q/w-d-xo.htmlsi=iRb6Mqbq-67sE3gE
"A few hundred dollar paperweight"??? How much do you pay your silicone???
There’s a link to alumilite in the description. This form and mold weigh almost 6 pounds together.. my big bottle stopper form and mold together weigh almost 14 pounds… So it adds up very quickly.
Curing time?
Good morning ….. 24 hours
Hi there Jake, I came here to try and find someone who might be willing to make something for my son that I have in mind. I thought about trying to do it myself but I’m not even a little bit educated in this field, I even tried contacting several toy companies with my idea but no luck so I thought I’d try here to see if I could just get something custom made by someone who knows what they’re doing. If you’d be willing to hear my idea and there is a way I could contact you I’d appreciate it a whole lot! Thanks!- Devan. K
I’m sorry.. I don’t do special orders right now.. you can contact me on Instagram or Facebook
That’s ok, thanks for your reply!
Wait! I'm gonna say yes because silicone caulk doesn't stick to old silicone caulk. It peels off, so the mold should as well. Okay... go! :)
Che' vorked! I gotta get more silicone, time to make some new molds. Thanks for the demo!
Awesome!! Thanks for watching and glad you enjoyed!👍👍
