Rick Allen here is using what is called traditional grip on the drumsticks. What you're used to seeing is matched grip. From the 1983 3rd album Pyromania, same as Rock of Ages. Between this record and the 4th album, Hysteria, is when Rick got into an accident and lost his left arm. So, for the poll, do you want an older song, or a song after the accident. For older, "Bringin' On the Heartbreak" , and after, the song "Women".
My number one favorite Def Leppard song, i discovered them in 1983 when this album (Pyromania) came out, i was 10 years old and i'm still a fan of the band to this day. They're still active making albums and touring.
I believe the way he was holding his stick is known as "traditional grip"..you're right Nikki it's not so common these days in rock music, more in jazz, or perhaps in marching bands..please check out Spiritbox, "Circle With Me" live featuring Tatiana from Jinjer or Ethel Cain "Punish"
I remember seeing this video in 1984... I think I was 7 and my mind was blown! I'd never seen or heard a heavy rock band w/ all guitars and it left a huge impression on me... Craziest thing I'd seen on TV ... Only years later, I found out it was Def Leppard and the song was "Foolin' " ... I finally got to see Def Leppard live in 2005 and hearing them play "Foolin' " live made my night... I think the idea was make music videos as outrageous as they could to get views on demand... and "Foolin " certainly did that. There were some crazy music videos made in the 80's like Peter Gabriel's "I don't remember" ... Dio's "The last in line" ... Ozzy Osbourne's 'Bark at the Moon' ... Cyndi Lauper's 'She bop' ... across all genres...
Yes we had a good run of Pearl Jam and they are worth seeing more for sure, with Def Leppard being a newer group on the channel it got more votes. This for sure was another catchy track for Def Leppard! And yes videos in the 80s were a totally different animal back than compared to the more recent ones.
The Way That Rick Allen Holds His Drumsticks That’s The Proper Way To Hold Your Drumstick’s It’s Always Been Like That But People Just Hold Them The Way That They Want To.
PEARL JAM'S "DAUGHTER" CAME IN LAST??? THAT'S A DARN SHAME. DEF LEPPARD IS ONE OF THE BANDS I LIKED FROM THE 1980'S. NIKKI DO YOU KNOW THE AWESOME DRUMMER ONLY PLAYS WITH ONE ARM? HE LOST HIS ARM IN A TERRIBLE CAR ACCIDENT. THANK YOU NIKKI, AWESOME VIDEO!! HOPEFULLY WE GET SOME MORE PEARL JAM. 😊💓🔥🤘✌️
Speaking for myself I never really liked that song from Pearl Jam. All their popular songs from the album Ten are better imo. Def Leppard playlist is loaded with bangers in the 80’s. They’re the biggest and best hard rock band throughout the 80’s overall.
It seems like the amount of hairspray and pyrotechnics used in this video was a dangerous combo... 🤣 Agree, shocking finish for Pearl Jam, haha. If you do check out "Daughter"... I recommend a live performance. They didn't make any real videos at all for their 2nd-4th albums. As a bonus, 99.9% of the time they tag another song or improv to the end of it live.
Look at it this way regarding early videos: If the talent typically used a lot of choreography on stage, then their videos likely included a lot of the same. These would be more pop groups: Michael Jackson, Madonna, etc. than rock bands. Rock band videos were usually actual concert footage or staged band footage similar to this one, with some video producers drug-fueled vision of something stupid and unrelated to the song thrown in; something the band was probably reluctant to do but wanted a video for MTV. Regardless, continue to not put any emphasis on the "story" in the video; in the off chance you see one that has a relevant story, you can just be pleasantly surprised!
Yeah Rick Allen the drummer lost his left arm on new year’s eve 1984, they sewed it back on but it had to be amputated due to infections. He didn’t do anything until 1986 when he decided to return to drums with one hand and a specially adapted drum kit with some electronic drums and pedals to do what he did with his left hand. I’m not sure whether this was before or after, they weren’t really on my radar. It’s a great song but to me the video is a bit meah, too obvious that they’re not performing it, but hey that’s just my personal opinion.
Actually, Rick Allen built his custom electronic drum kit in 1985 after leaving the hospital and spent months re-learning to play drums w/ 1 arm & 2 feet ... while Def Leppard worked on the 'Hysteria' album... but the studio sessions were fruitless. In 1986, Rick Allen felt confident enough to play gigs again after months of practicing and rehearsed w/ Def Leppard for a few live gigs... Joe Elliott (vocals) said Allen suggested bringing in a backing drummer (Jeff Rich) for the shows but it wasn't necessary... Rick Allen was ready... Def Leppard played UK's Monsters of Rock festival in the Summer of '86 and Rick Allen was officially back.
I keep hoping and hoping to see "Tool" or "A Perfect Circle" or "Deftones" eventually. :) Those bands are sooo amazing and creative. Compared with other 80s bands, Def Leppard didn't have the weirdest videos.
How do you keep track of what songs you have reacted to? I bought just over 220 cds last year as i started to collect 90's and early 2000's various rock/metal genres and sub genres. And i can barely keep track of what all i have. Doing the same with singular songs sounds impossible. I got over 7,600 songs in my digital collection by over 1,200 artists and again, nightmare fuel!!! 😵🤯
80s videos were sometimes TOO creative, to the point where they would have nothing to do with the song. Since they were a new medium, a lot of creative experimentation was going on.

total 80s classic rock. The entire Pyromania album is solid.
Def Leppard - "Bringin On The HeartBreak" studio version, lyric video
Great reaction, more def Leppard reaction , you could do def Leppard all day as far as I'm concerned, my all time favorite band since 1981!
My number one favorite Def Leppard song, i discovered them in 1983 when this album (Pyromania) came out, i was 10 years old and i'm still a fan of the band to this day. They're still active making albums and touring.
Def Leppard - Rock! Rock! (Till You Drop) is a good tune.
The earworm from Pyromania is definitely Comin' Under Fire. That song lives in my head rent free.

I wonder if the reason Pearl Jam didn't win is because of the music video. It's kind of a bland video but the song is terrific!

"Hysteria" and "Animal". Or "Love Bites" if you prefer a ballad.
Good choice for you
I mean I love all of these, but my goodness Pearl Jam should have been waaaay higher even if it didn't win!
The Who - Won't Get Fooled Again (Shepperton Studios / 1978), could you add it to your list?
Billies got a gun is a great deep cut deign
Traditional grip. I know most drummers dont use it anymore. I use it at times.
Pearl Jam Footsteps please..
Regards to Chile..

Def leppard foolin in 1 best lp Pyromania 1983
Pearl Jam definitely should have beaten Linkin Park. Not sure what happened there.

Binging On the Heartbreak is a great early song. Rock of Ages is also a great one to try. (Similar to Foolin' in style).
She did Rock of Ages last week.
@@trotter73ca I probably saw it, but I watch so many channels and just don't remember. But thanks for the update.
You got to react to Riff Raff by AC/DC live Apollo Theater, 1978!

Watch Rick Allen after his car accident try songs off hysteria
Perl jam sucks compared to def Leppard
Music videos are entertaining (sometimes), but ultimately they are a distraction from the music.
I can understand that. I feel like sometimes they paint a better picture of what the artist is talking about, but apparently in the 80s not so much. 😂
Some 90s band copies them
80s videos were sometimes TOO creative, to the point where they would have nothing to do with the song. Since they were a new medium, a lot of creative experimentation was going on.
Yeah that makes sense. People probably wanted to test out all the options they had. 😅
I don’t like Perl jam
