      I actually came here because I'm world building a naval heavy world. Spelljamers are essentially the end game. My first thought, with having the obvious inclusion of a pirate-like faction, was to make a mission based on Treasure Planet. Me and all my players have seen it and love it. So it'd be an awesome bit of nostalgia that we can actually experience. The character based on B.E.N. is a warforged. John Silver is actually going to be Edward Thatch because I added him as a tavern owner and chef as a fun nod to the world influences. And now this long term, rather non important character that they've all loved is now standing in their way.

    This is so cool and funny because my first time dming and just playing dnd I knew nothing about the lore of dnd and by session 6 my players had a flying pirate ship and said “what if we fly this into space” and that’s how my players turned my game into a fantasy sci-fi game with martins and beholders. It’s actually because of that campaign that I found Mr. Rexx via his beholder video and then discovered mind flayers. Václav Med I tried to make the Astro plane into this virtual space stored in a extra dimensional Dyson sphere supercomputer, and plane shifting is really just converting mater into information, which then if you were to fly up from the planet, you still get the ‘vacuum’ of space, but if you ‘plane shift’ it becomes the Astro plane.

      You need to be at least 25ft in any direction to exert true gravity. The force of gravity is the same regardless of size (as long as you are at least 25ft long at least). The bigger object will exert its gravity upon the smaller object and cancel the smaller object's gravity.

      As others have posted, there is old school material for spell jamming. The books are expensive these days, with a new copy bringing in a high dollar value. There is also a ton of converted material available for more modern versions.
      2e was the heyday for D&D in terms of available content. It is work to convert to modern editions, but there is a ton of potential in a lot of old stuff. Dungeon Magazine released modules regularly, and if you're willing to put in the work, you'll find a great deal available for campaigns.

      5e D&D doesn't _have_ 10 round turns, it has turns that last for one part of one round. but when you're converting over information like "how long will your air supply last", it is important to understand that the AD&D 2nd edition value which he is using as his basis is listed in AD&D 2nd edition turns, which are 10 minutes long each. so, for example, 2 to 20 turns of air is in fact 20 to 200 minutes. not 2 minutes.

    Actually, funnily enough, as long as you could maintain a source of oxygen, while it would be quite uncomfortable without a pressure suit, you could actually travel through space. The pressure aspect, while somewhat true, generally your body is good enough and keeping your insides inside and your outsides outside. Given half the stuff high level adventures deal with on a daily basis, this is nothing.
    As for temperature, due to the lack of substance to thermally conduct with, often enough you overheat rather then freeze to death. Becoming cold requires you to touch something that has less thermal energy then you. Since space very much has nothing, you only lose heat from thermal radiance, and that isn't very effective compared to, say, touching a cold gas. Often, being in direct sunlight overheats you due to all of the ultraviolet rays directly hitting your body and warming you up, as well as ionizing parts of your body.

    • @MrDeclareWar
      @MrDeclareWar 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      You can’t be more wrong, regardless of your oxygen content in your body, you can’t withstand the air leaving your body due to the lack of pressure in the vacuum of space (pressure is high to low) with (pV=nRT, P=nRT/V to get pressure or P=F/A). Essentially the air rushes out a incredibly speeds into the vacuum of space, humans cannot stop this without pressure suits because our bodies are too exposed. In space you have magnetospheres from countless planets blocking ionising radiation from killing you, you definitely don’t overheat in space at all, your blood boils but at body temperature. Thermal energy can be transferred in other forms than conductivity. Infrared radiation is the carrier of heat through space hence how heat gets from out sun to our planet, it’s also one way we lose heat in space, you can’t say you get warm in space, it depends on the distance from a heat source, your surface area for conductivity when the radiation hits you and so on, but in space you’ll mostly likely always be cold.
      Becoming cold doesn’t require you to touch something, in space where there is very little matter your body loses heat from its centre, it loses heat via air escaping, blood, radiation and so on. It also loses heat via conduction/convection of the tiny particles in space. All this heat loss causes you to cool down to your surroundings so 2.7k. Space doesn’t cool you down, matter simply isn’t energetic in cold areas so it’s reciprocates. Pretty basic stuff.
      Astronauts used heated pressure suits btw, not scuba suits 😂 stupid. What you said is basically going into space with a scuba suit 😂 😂.

    Per the Teleport spell "The destination you choose must be known to you, and it must be on the same plane of existence as you."
    All campaign settings are on the same plane, so just different crystal spheres, so you can teleport from one setting to another as long as you know where you're going.
    Likewise, you wouldn't be able to teleport from the Outlands to any Material Plane, since they are on different planes of existence.

      @Warlok except, it is canon. The description for Neogi for instances references them building spiderships and traveling from world to world. Elminster and Mordenkainen have both been to Earth several times. Vecna is from Greyhawk, but is now a god in the Realms. People have been traveling between settings since D&D was a thing.

      They traveled between world via spelljamming. That is still Canon. Things in the current edition may have changed so that Spelljamming doesn't work anymore, but that doesn't change the past. Unless they release something that retcons this, it's still canon.

      "Canon" in fictional stories typically refers to material related to the story that is considered "official", either by the story creator(s) or the audience. The flipside is something being non-canon: this happens when something is created for a series that ends up being not official. But it is probably not canon, al least not completely because it shows Golarion which is the standart Pathfinder planet but said world definetly operates using regular physics and it is a standart regular universe. After all, the stars on the golarian night sky are as big as Mataras (the star which Golarion orbite around) and they have completely diferent biospheres, etc.
      After all, Starfinder is a sci-fi game set in the same universe as Pathfinder and, while Golarion itself have dissapeared. It have existed and the core solar system is the same one as in Pathfinder.
      Then again, you could ignore that or just take Golarion out of the map, it really won't give you anything than a diferent world could give you.

      it has very little to do with the god's power, and whether or not they are worshipped in a given sphere (alternately, a similar friendly god or a god that is part of their pantheon can also step in and help, potentially. Tyr lucks out because he's part of the norse pantheon in addition to being a forgotten realms deity, which helps substantially, but does not remotely make him universally worshipped in every sphere).
      you also don't lose all powers. you might be unable to recharge them, or you might simply have difficulty recharging them, but if you had a bunch of spells when you arrive, you keep them until you use them regardless.

    A kingdom of undead mummy lords in space. They don't need air, and they don't need to feed on life energy.
    They could just occasionally kidnap someone and turn them into an undead of there choice. After decades they have a free army.

    Somehow i don't recall space being so simple as just needing a pocket of air in the Cloakmaster Cycle. I thought it was more like the spells to create an atmosphere took care of pressure and temperature issues on their own. Basically taking all that we do with Engineering and making a magical equivolent.

    Your eyes get colder in space. As water evaporates it steals heat from you (like a spray can feels cool in your hand). Yes the water boils but the heat to vaporize the liquid comes from you.

    Funnily enough. If Ravnica is reachable from any DnD world, it means that any MtG plane is reachable from DnD world. Which also means that forgotten realms have ways to planeswalk.

    11:55 Not quite! Earth is in a separate Material Plane! Our Universe overlaps with The Prime through Mystara though, basically, Mystara exists within a crystal sphere in the phlogiston BUT its crystal sphere also exists in the Milky Way, sort of 'out of phase' with both universes. If you leave Mystara's sphere via a spelljammer, you end up in the Flow of phlogiston, but if you leave it physically via non magical means (such as just floating out) you end up in the Milky Way.

    Oh damn, that's funky! :D
    I love all these ship designs and creatures - I never knew that space in DnD was so drastically different from our universe. That's awesome!
    One question though:
    Is this all on the level of the Prime Material Plane? With each world having their own parallel planes, like the elemental planes, the astral planes etc.?
    Or are those planes also part of this greater universe, with their own respective shells?

    • @b.calvinsaul1909
      @b.calvinsaul1909 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This is all on the Prime Material Plane. Other Material Planes have crystal shells containing worlds, but their similarity to the Prime will vary.
      All of the Material Planes, Prime, Demi, Alternate, and otherwise, are separate from the Elemental Planes (Inner), Astral, Ethereal, and Outer Planes. Not every Material Plane has the same access to the Astral or Border Ethereal, e.g. Ravenloft.

      @@b.calvinsaul1909 Gotcha, thanks!
      So let's say that you Planeshift from Fearûn to the Plane of Water, and from Wildemount to the Plane of Water - you would end up in the exact same Plane of Water both times?
      Or does each world have their own personal surrounding planes, which differ from Shell to Shell?

      @Warlok honestly, at this point we're talking planescape.
      anyways, in general you probably won't end up in the same place on an elemental plane, unless you have a spell that lets you choose the specific destination (like the city of brass in the elemental plane of fire), given they're infinite. i suppose you theoretically could, but the impression i always got was that not just your crystal sphere but your planet generally has a chunk of the elemental planes associated with it... i'd have to dig through a lot of stuff to find where it says that, but i can tell you that elementals don't like being in wildspace because it's not as closely related to their home as a planet would be.

    • @robertfitzjohn4755
      @robertfitzjohn4755 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, the water would get colder.
      (Some of the water boils, which requires latent heat of vapourisation. That heat comes from the rest of the water, which cools and eventually freezes.)
      Of course, that might give you a burning sensation, like when you touch very cold metal.

  • @gonzaloayalaibarre
    @gonzaloayalaibarre 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    2:30 They would boil, but not causing burns, they would even boil at negative temperatures, in fact, all of that evaporation would make your body very very cold as it is endothermic.
    2:42 Space is very cold, but there's no matter there to exchange temperature with, so you would only lose heat through radiation, it would be an extremely slow process, and if directly exposed to the sun, you would actually heat up from just hanging there in space. Also, even if contact with space would cool your body: 1. There would be almost no fluid left to freeze. 2. it would probably still evaporate at said extremely low temperatures, I know that ice can form in space, but only at some ridiculously low temperatures.
    So it was literally the other way around, I love how these topics just refuse to be simple to understand.
