  • When you think of formidable predators in the bird world, what comes to mind first? Eagles, hawks, falcons, and other raptors are most likely the answers brought up by the general population. However, these birds of prey have dramatic traits, such as large size and talons, specifically meant to aid in hunting other creatures. Whether known to you or not, there is cute, little songbird that hunts prey just like these raptors without any of those traits. Known as the Loggerhead Shrike, I'll be telling you 10 facts about this amazing hunter.

Shrikes are a smart group of birds. I have never seen this particular species so it was interesting to learn about it.

Very interesting video about a cute little predator. I don't have a shrike in my neighborhood. Enjoyed and liked. Best wishes.

Really interesting. We have Australian Butcherbirds nesting on our property and they are named Butcherbirds because they are supposed to impale small animals for easy eating like this Shrike, but after decades of observation we have never seen them do that. The Loggerhead shrike does look quite similar to our Grey Butcherbirds to an inexperienced eye. I wonder if the early settlers simply named our Butcherbirds because of their similarity of appearance rather then the habit of impaling prey. Very informative video👍

I once uploaded a video that I thought was loggerhead shrike. But since I am in Africa, it could be another specie but the appearance looks very similar. Your video is very informative.. Thanks

Great video and info on the Loggerhead Shrike! We don’t have them in our area- fascinating to learn about them. They seem very smart and their parents must teach them some of their hunting skills. Big Like! 👍

I saw this bird today at the feeder, every other bird left and he sat on the tree where the feeder was, 2x times in about 30 mins it dove down tossed around a mouse killing it where it laid, then flew away carrying it in the feet, could see that mouse was close to max weight for him. He came back third time left after about 20mins of no action- so cool my new favorite bird

We do have an equivalent, Don - Red-backed Shrike (Lannius Callurio) and Great Grey Shrike (Lanius excubitor) - both can be observed throughout Poland and I saw both in my area, I actually saw two male representatives of the "red" species last Sunday on a Mazovian meadow near Warsaw - they were perching on high wires, perhaps looking for preys😀
Great video of this scary little birdie😉

I mean, it they eat insects or mice, that I can still understand... but if they kill and eat other birds... that is such a shocking behavior... I mean, not even a lion will kill and eat other lions, I think.

Reckon we're all dumb sometimes 🙃. I grew up hearing about loggerhead sea turtles all the time on the Georgia coast so I was surprised to hear a bird with the same name. Incidentally "being at loggerheads" with someone is a ye Olde way of referring to an unresolved argument.

Why is the photo at 18 seconds of a Harpy Eagle that only lives in South America, supposedly attacking a Proboscis Monkey, that lives in the islands of Asia? At 1:09 seconds you say that "Loggerhead Shrikes are the only known predatory songbirds." Well, that is just ridiculous. For a start there are many other shrikes, then there are the true butcherbirds, plus of course ravens, currawongs, magpies, orioles, flycatchers, and so many other songbirds that are just as predatory. Indeed most songbirds are predatory, with diets of insects, worms, baby birds, snails whatever. Especially when feeding young. even finches are predatory feeding on insects when feeding young. Actually butcherbirds are a quite separate group of other species of birds that occur in Australia. This group of shrikes do not occur in Australia, so that makes it easy to tell the difference. Butcherbirds are sort of similar to shrikes in many aspects of behaviour, except that butcherbirds are a lot bigger than shrikes, with much bigger hooked beaks, they are black and white or grey with not much colour. They have very musical songs and butcherbirds do not impale prey on thorns in the way that shrikes do. They will wedge prey in forks of branches.

I have no desire to protect this vicious predator that decapitated 7 sparrows in my feeding area in 2 days! It was so heartbreaking. I have enjoyed feeding these happy little birds who are constantly in fear of the larger predators , never suspecting the songbird that looks almost like them that feeds beside him is a deadly threat. I have stopped feeding all birds temporarily in hopes that these shrikes will move on without prey in my lawn. I miss the doves, sparrows, blue jays, cardinals, etc who would come and eat, drink, bathe, and enjoy my offerings. So sad.😢
