  • The Northern Mockingbird is one of North America’s most beloved mimics. If you’ve been hearing an endless string of 10 to 15 different birds singing outside your house, you might have a Northern Mockingbird in your yard. These slender-bodied gray birds apparently pour all their color into their personalities. They sing almost endlessly, even sometimes at night, and they flagrantly harass birds that intrude on their territories, flying slowly around them or prancing toward them, legs extended, flaunting their bright white wing patches. Here are 10 facts you might not have known about the Northern Mockingbird.

I live in NYC, and the range of sounds they can remember and mimic is amazing. There’s a friendly dude who frequents my yard, sometimes sitting a couple feet away just looking around.
I’ve heard car alarms, pedestrian crosswalk beeps, low battery smoke detector chirps (my favorite), and more.

Many days ago I noticed every night i go out to the yard the songs of a mockingbird quite close above my head.
Everytime I say something or just sing he does such an incredible and different improvisations .

Hey man, I’m a big bird lover I’ve got Mockingbird galore down here in Georgia is across the street in a big bush in front of the doctors office and he or she has the same nest every year- i’m in a small town, so nobody messes with them. Hopefully they’ll leave the bush there.

I adore and love mockingbirds, they have a beautiful array of songs. Their songs are tranquil, peaceful, and very entertaining to me. I don’t know if any other species of wild birds has such a vast vocabulary. All I know is I love birds and appreciate their awesome songs.❤❤❤❤❤…

they have an incredible amount of stamina to sing all day long and the variety of chirps they produce is astounding! I’ve been working in my yard and they are just the happiest little birds. so I walked the dogs around the block before sunset and I heard like the angriest sounds coming from two Mockingbird, which caught my attention and I look up and there’s a huge owl in the tree and they were not happy about that owl, and they kept after him until he flew out of the tree and one of those feisty little birds escorted that huge owl right out of the neighborhood

I recently made friends with a mockingbird. She (or he) stood at my empty tray feeder waiting for me to put food out. I had stopped feeding for a short while to deal with the squirrelies. So I went ahead and filled it. She or he proceeded to eat. Then I noticed one or the other hanging out on the electric wires above the alley. They were apparently helicoptering about. Then in my Jasmine bush where I was pulling weeds I found it...a nest with 1 newborn. Sooo cute! I looked at it and went on with my chores. I speak a lot to my poochies and kitties so birds are no different. They were tolerant of me helicoptering the baby. I took a look a couple times a day and talked to it. Then one day it was gone! Broke my heart! So I left the nest alone and maybe one day it will be used again. I am amazed at the nest construction. But today the Mockingbird(s) showed up again on the electric wires. Am crossing fingers.

I saved a hummingbird once from my cat .. he had just somehow caught the bird and had it in her mouth .. but one sec after she caught it I walked out back door and noticed it in her mouth and yelled at her stomping my feet and it startled her making her drop the hummingbird. So I picked it up holding it in my hands looking over it to see if it had any visible injuries and it did not. It had grabbed onto its beak with both feet for some reason. So I carefully peeled one foot at a time off of its beak and was just holding it in my palm I told it it's ok birdie you ok fly go go go and next thing I knew it just took off flying away ...so cool...that was like a real treat for me so to speak not just being able to save the hummingbird but also getting the chance to actually hold one in my hands was pretty damn cool..they so small . Like the size of a silver dollar. What are the odds of ever getting to hd a hummingbird bird in your hands .. thankfully the cats saliva didn't paralyze the bird.. usually all's it takes is like one drop of cats saliva and it will paralyze the bird and they usually won't recover from it.. just thought I would share this story. Enjoy your day .oh and btw I got 3 mocking birds singing right now 24/7 around my house ..

I put a chaise lounge in my backyard to enjoy some private reading time. A mocking bird would come every day and perch on the wire running into the home. He would sing just to get my attention. He would hop more vigorously to get my undivided attention so he could entertain me. I was a pleasant experience especially because he was so friendly and wanted to entertain.

I have been feeding a female mockingbird and she has 4 babies. I feel she knows I am feeding her. She does still swoop at me and follows me everywhere. She even sits close by me and fluffs up and stares at me. Although she is eating the food I leave her.

I habe many mockingbirds nesting in my Holly bushes. There is one male that comes every spring and summer. I know him because he only knows one song and I think he may be a bit "slow". His song is a bit "simple" compared to the other Mockingbirds. I have to say he is persistent.

I'm surprised it wasn't mentioned...the males do an interesting thing to attract females, whereby a male will go onto a tree branch (typically along the end of an upper branch) and 'jump' straight up in the air about 2 feet...and back down on the branch...and repeatedly do this, multiple times, apparently to show how agile they are. I only know this because one day I observed a mockingbird doing this very thing, and I thought 'what the hell??!'... so then I Googled it...
