Great song and a real throw back to the real Australia of the 1980s.
"The Buttery" is a drug and alcohol rehabilitation facility in Binna Burra, northern NSW that is still operating as of 2019.
"Olympic" was an interstate coach line that ran until around 1980, a later version of the song changed the wording to "McCafferty" which was an Australian coach line that formed in 1940 and begun operating interstate coach lines in December 1980 before being taken over by Greyhound Australia in 2004.
"Silver Top" refers to the Silver Top Taxi Service, formed in 1936 in Sydney, NSW and still operating as of 2019 in both Sydney and Melbourne.

They got married early, never had no money
Then when he got laid off, they really hit the skids
He started up his drinking, then they started fighting
He took it pretty badly, she took both the kids
She said, "I'm not standing by to watch you slowly die
So watch me walking out the door
Out the door, out the door"
She said, "Shove it, Jack, I'm walking out your fucking door"
She went to her brother's, got a little bar work
He went to the buttery, he stayed about a year
Then he wrote a letter, and said, "I want to see ya"
She thought he sounded better, she sent him up the fare
He was riding through the cane in the pouring rain
    On Olympic to her door
To her door, to her door
To her door, to her door
And his heart was singing like a lowdown guitar
He came in on a Sunday, every muscle aching
Walking in slow motion like he'd just been hit
Did they have a future? Would he know his children?
Could he make a picture and get them all to fit?
He was shaking in his seat, riding through the streets
In a Silver Top to her
Shaking in his seat, riding through the streets
In a Silver Top to her door
To her door, to her door
    To her door

We studied Paul Kelly in high school in English Literature. He is such a formidable storyteller that his lyrics read like poetry. This song in particular is incredibly poignant. It is not just about one family - it is about an entire culture that's in crisis. Those final lyrics out, "he was shaking in his seat, riding through the streets", the anxiety and dread is so palpable.

REM because of their superb songs went on to become international stars . Well one day in 87 somebody handed me a cassette by Paul Kelly and the Messengers . I was overwhelmed and searched for more . It was my brother who had given me that Paul Kelly tape . He said “ I don’t see why they aren’t bigger . They are just as good a Songwriters as REM “. I happened to agree.

One only has to read the public statments of those who designed the Voice, to know how it will work! One man who stood next to the PM when he announced the referendum wording is Thomas Mayo who sits on the PM's Referendum Working Group which drafted the referendum question. Mayo published his book titled "The Voice to Parliament Handbook". His signature is on the Uluru Statement and he has spent 18 months travelling around Australia trying to talk Australians into changing the Constitution to include the Voice. He is a union official and self-described “militant” on record as saying the Voice will “punish politicians”, “abolish colonialist institutions” and “pay the rent, pay reparations and compensation”.
Rather than the Voice being the “inspiring and unifying Australian moment” and "modest request" described by the PM, Mr Mayo told a Communist conference “there is nothing that we can do that is more powerful than building a first nations’ Voice, a black institution, a black political force to be reckoned with”. At a 2021 "Invasion Day" protest he described “the powers that be” as “murderers”, and said he was “sick of governments not listening to our voice” so planned “to use the rulebook of the nation to force them”. At Black Lives Matter protests and other addresses he reveals the Voice’s radical origins in the Search Foundation which describes itself as the “successor organisation of the Communist Party of Australia”.
