This is such a beautifully heartbreaking song...and now there's a movie called Jindabyne but I dunno which came first...it reminds me of my young and dumb partygirl days, I always used to carry this newspaper clipping of this girl who went running down a neighbourhood street, screaming for help and NOBODY helped, nobody called the police, nobody opened their doors, they found her raped and dead the next day. And this was in AUSTRALIA ffs...I've always believed and relied on the kindness of strangers but I guess I carried that clipping around to remind me you can't always depend on that...lol and oh yes, Paul Kelly is the quintessential Aussie voice
"They stood there above her all thinking the same thoughts at the same time" always kills me. Starts the tears every time. And later "I went to the service a stranger" finishes the job.
This is probably the best rendition of this song, which has sadly been scrubbed from recent reissues of Songs from the South, and now can’t be streamed anywhere but here!
Paul Kelly is the greatest. No doubt Kasey Chambers and Vika Bull are both great singers but he really sings it like a story teller. Funny how a female narrative can be sung by a man and it still works beautifully.
In my opinion, Paul Kelly is one of Australia's greatest singer /songwriters. This is one of his finest.
That’s not a personal opinion, it’s an actual fact.
England had John Lennon, America have Bob Dylan and we have Paul Kelly.
so brave
DEVINE
This is like saying in my opinion, the sky is blue
❤
I know this song is true unbelievable
How so?
Paul Kelly ìs my bastard spiritual father. I've never seen him in person, not even from a distance but he is a part of me. I love the man.
Every piece of your music has grown to be beautiful.

Maybe people couldn't hear the cries of the woman. But I reckon you like judging others for your imagined failings
@@tonyjones4861You suck! 😊
@@tonyjones4861it's called the bystander effect and I have many many MANY failings, but I least I'm not mean to strangers on the internet
And behind my eyes my daily disguise everything's turning to white.

Well bloody said paulie
I literally just got chills hearing that line. I have loved this song for years.
A beautiful ballad based on a Raymond Carver short story.

Raymond Carver! This song is based on a Raymond Carver short story! Oh snap! I can't believe I got that.
Eerie and haunting, but beautiful narrative. Why was it not in the film "Jindabyne" it would've been perfect.
Just listened to Kasey Chambers murdering this song. Save yourself the time and pain and don’t go there.
Vika Bull does a good version
