    Hi friends! At 00:07 we do include a disclaimer that Josephine was only shown the 'pointe shoe part' of Michelle's video (she did not watch the whole thing since it's a half hour). We are aware that Michelle did not do a full performance en pointe, and that overall, her experience was relatively safe. But for the sake of those who don't know anything about ballet, we just want to be super clear that going en pointe after 6 weeks is not safe.
    Thanks for watching, and enjoy!

      I appreciate so much how careful and professional you are! Agree with all of your observations, and especially, that it should not feel this bad and that she was improperly 'fitted.' Actually not fitted at all, ugh. What bothers me about this clip is that it promotes the idea that pointe is painful, that you should be on the nail of your big toe, etc., which will lead young dancers who get pointe shoes in the boondocks to accept unnecessary pain and incompetent fitting because they think it's to be expected. I'm in my fifth decade of dancing and when I got my first pair of Pawlova's -- four decades ago! nothing, AND I MEAN NOTHING, hurt. My Russian-trained ballet teacher went with me to the shop and did the fitting.

  • @nana7169
    @nana7169 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1797

    You should do a fitting with her and let her go up on point again. So she can maybe experience a less painful moment on point 🙈

    • @shieldmaidenforchrist1310
      @shieldmaidenforchrist1310 3 ปีที่แล้ว +63

      It's still going to hurt like crazy because it's not possible to build up enough foot strength in 6 weeks to pull up out of the shoes at all. The shoe will be holding her up, basically, if it wasn't rock hard she wouldn't have been able to basically rock up (only using her ankle, not her foot, no roll through at all). If you are sinking in the shoe due to lack of strength (or exhaustion) it puts way more pressure on the toes, is harder on the joints, and hurts way more. Plus you literally have to tough it out during the process of your toes toughening up. Kinda like developing a callous, but it's different, it's the soft tissue and skin on the end of the toe becoming tough enough to handle the pressure of all that weight compressing it.

    • @JessieBanana
      @JessieBanana 3 ปีที่แล้ว +28

      @@shieldmaidenforchrist1310 I disagree, with a bar for support, you shouldn’t be experience that much pain even if you’re not pulling up. I have been back on pointe for a while, but I remember trying out pointe shoes after a very long break and while I had old muscle memory, I highly doubt I was really capable of pulling up properly. I wasn’t in horrible pain.

    • @thewayiam203
      @thewayiam203 3 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      @@shieldmaidenforchrist1310 It would only be trying it out so she would not get to the point of exhaustion and would be fitted so that she does not sink. Toe pads also come to mind. I think no one who watched the whole video Michelle did, would hate on you. Yes, wrong fitting shoes, but she just tried them to see how it feels, she didn't do the performance on them. And the job both you did as a teacher and Michelle as a student was impressive. I mean she changed her diet and went to the gym in between classes... and learned 3 dances to perform in 6 weeks, and she did lifts... it's a lot and it reminded me of all my first experiences in ballet as an adult (just compressed into 6 weeks, and without the pointe- I had to wait 2 years for those). For ballet 6 weeks is nothing. And you were perfect as teacher for such a task, encouraging and explaining. Big fan of you btw

    Having worked with beginner adult ballet students for 10+ years, I am not surprised she finds this extraordinarily painful in a way it would not be to someone who experienced a more traditional transition to pointe; especially after only 6 weeks. Young ballerinas don’t understand how much preparatory pain tolerance they have acquired simple by wearing ballet slippers. Practicing tendus and landing properly takes that acquired pain tolerance to a whole different level. We dancers are accustomed to feeling our toes squished together as well as feeling our weight upon surfaces of the foot other than sole or the pad of the toe. We don’t realize how painful a tendu derrière is to someone who lacks experience. Knowing that, I can imagine being on full pointe would be very intense. This is just one of the preliminary concepts that affect how dancers are able to work in pointe shoes.

    Never tried ballet, but I can definitely vouch for the importance of a proper fitting by a trained footwear specialist before attempting something technical and strenuous. The first time I bought a pair of ice climbing boots, the young, inexperienced guy at the store put me in boots that were very high quality, but didn't fit my foot shape and were much too small. After a long day of climbing in them, I had bleeding blisters on my heels and permanent nerve damage in both my big toes. The next time I bought boots, I flew all the way to Seattle to get them properly fitted at a reputable shop, and my subsequent climbing experiences were 1000% better. No pain, no blisters, no nerve damage, just warmth, comfort and stability all day long. God bless shoe fitters!

      Natalia has been on pointe at least since she was 8, so she has an incredible amount of strength in her feet and ankles. She was doing hops on pointe at 10. With her incredible strength, she prefers a softer shoe and more space in the front part. Some professional ballerinas even cut the shank to 3/4 because they're that strong. It isn't just the pointe shoe that gets you up on pointe. It's the strength of the muscles that have been built up in your thighs, calves and feet that pull you up on pointe. It is to be hoped that any one going on pointe has done several years of ballet training, bending and stretching exercises to build muscle. Going on pointe is the next step after many exercises on demi pointe. If there has been no preparation a person could injure their ankles or worse by trying to stand on pointe. Those with flat feet and no arch will almost find it impossible to balance on pointe.

    I’m a ballet dancer on pointe and she isn’t pointing her feet. She probably thinks it hurts because its the wrong shoe or she hasn’t cut her nails.

    I have those great feet where my middle toe is longer than my big toe, plus the bunions on both sides of the foot, both feet. We didn’t get fitted for odd feet when I was hung and dancing, we just used spacers, tape and padding. So the shoes always hurt a bit but I loved every damn minute of it.
    It’s better now and shoes can be customized better. This was decades and decades ago.

    My guess is incorrect fit, and her big toes have ingrown toenails, in which case, it is torture. Can you talk about this? I ws dancing on toe after 3 months. I was able, though. I excelled at ballet, and didn't start until I was 18. I loved it, and danced with two companies. Did a quadruple pirouette and landed in a perfect fourth my first toe Pointe class. Boom!

    Im not a ballerina, but i have a friend way in hs who is, she at one point brought with her her pointe shoes, and so i tried it, she allowed me to do so, it's not that bad honestly i did couple of turns on her instructions. But it would obviously hurt if you are on pointe for around 30mins or so, but when it's just like 5mins -10 mins, it's honestly not bad

    My first time en pointe was that painful. We used to stuff lambs wool in the box and I remember my toe nails hurting. They were a cappezzio shoe but no idea what model. After about 6 hours en pointe the pain largely disappeared but they always hurt a bit and my feet bled for years. I wish I had a good shoe fitter at the time.

I know NOW that I really could have messed myself up, but as a 10/11 year old it was just fun. I thought to myself, "If it hurts that bad then she probably doesn't have the right shoe.

    personally i do think its worth pointing out that if you've never done ballet, let alone pointe, it would probably be a lot more painful to go up on pointe than it would be if you'd been doing it for many years. I can say for certain that my toes/feet are not strong enough or flexible enough to support my body the way ballet dancers' can. Even just doing some of the basic non-pointe poses is very painful simply bc I haven't spent years training and stretching my body in that particular way. Just a thought!

    Someone else said this already, but I feel like I need to reiterate... her toenails look too long. I paused and examined at 1.28. Taking into account the angle of the camera, the flesh on the tip of her big toe will compress in the shoe to at least the edge of the nail. If I'm right about that (which is likely, based on her comment), then of course she's going to feel pressure on the toenails - they're taking more weight than they should. Ouch, that is definitely painful! Someone should have told her she has to trim those babies right down as far as they'll comfortably go AT LEAST the night before. That, combined with a shoe that looks too big, as Josephine identified... I mean... sigh. Congratulations to Michelle on her bravery for not only trying but also going on camera, and kudos to the teacher for going slow with her, that is important. But she's describing a kind of pain that she shouldn't be experiencing to the general public, who don't know any better. That's what I find disappointing.

    It absolutely is normal for her to feel pain as a novice trying out pointe prematurely. Sure, improper fitting is likely part of it, but you also can't compare her situation with a normally trained ballerina. It's like saying that running a 9-minute mile shouldn't be too bad. Yes, it is true that for people who have a basic baseline of aerobic fitness, running a 9-minute mile is absolutely nothing. But for people who do not exercise, it is difficult. Similarly, for people who've built up the muscle strength for pointe, the pain may not be too bad as long as your shoe is properly fitted. But for someone who doesn't have those muscles for pointe, it will be painful because of the lack of control within the foot itself.

    jus making it clear for the people watching . Michelle does this thing called challenge accepted on her yt channel she challenges herself to do multiple things that no normal human can ( so not just ballet). Yes it is dangerous to go en point even for 6 weeks but pls be reminded that michelle never danced in her whole life. so for the people who may think that she is a actual ballerina going en point for the first time she isnt :) and trurst me her resume if she made one would look impeccable if she mentions everything she has done on challenge accepted
